Tell me if I'm being precious over this

My dds have been learning a Mothers Day song at school. Dd2 sang it to me in the car yesterday and it contains this line:

'Sometimes she gets stressy'

I'm a bit of a stickler for spelling/punctuation/general good grammar and I object to the non-word 'stressy'. How can we expect our children to speak well and properly if they're learning things like this....?

Would this annoy you?

Why doesn't the song mention any the happy stuff?

I'm not unremittingly grumpy, I don't need allowances to be made for my miserable behaviour because ,after all I do love them and I'm the only mummy they've got.

I want to celebrate the happy, fun, rewarding relationship between myself and my children. Yes, I do occassionally get cross or grumpy but it's not my defining characteristic.

I love the song that senua posted. It describes me to a tee!

MardyBra · 01/04/2011 11:48

Anyway, going back to the word "stressy". I would say that is certainly used colloquially and your description of it as a "non-word" is incorrect.

It's in the Cambridge dictionary here.

Whether you object to it as being too informal for a children's song is another matter (I personally don't, although as you've probably gathered there are other parts of the song I object to).

So, OP, what do you say to those of us who think that "precious" is a word that describes an item of intense value to somebody and should not be used as a way to describe a person acting in a fussy or self-indulgent fashion?

For those of you offended by the sexism in this song, this is the one we used to sing at school:

Don't forget to tell your mum you love her,
Give her a hug when you get home,
Don't forget to tell your mum that she's the best,
Make her put her feet up she deserves a rest!
Don't forget to tell your mum you love her...
She does all the washing, the cleaning, the shopping,
And all because she loves us so!

MardyBra · 01/04/2011 12:04

I seem to remember my kids singing one to the tune of "The Animals Went in Two by Two""
Can't remember all the words but it sort of went:

I love my mum, she cares for me - Hurrah Hurrah
I love my mum, she cares for me, she something or other and cooks my tea...

moonstonezoe · 01/04/2011 12:27

yes

moonstonezoe · 01/04/2011 12:28

Sorry, to clarify previous post. Yes it would annoy me.

TotemPole · 01/04/2011 12:31

Roses are red.
My mum is blue.
I think she looks odd.
You would too.
