I was out for lunch last week and a mum changed her baby's nappy (while on her knee) at the table........is this normal/acceptable? I just don't think its hygienic...I didn't say anything but she ate her sandwich afterwards....

Was it Britney?

oldraver · 31/03/2011 17:56

I would think it scutterish I'm afraid

grovel · 31/03/2011 17:56

It's revolting.

manicinsomniac · 31/03/2011 17:57

eeeeew, no, you are not being unreasonable.

Even if there was no baby changing room there must have been a toilet.

AgentZigzag · 31/03/2011 18:01

You can get a bit desensitised to nappy changing when you do it all the time.

But definately not at a table with people eating, and not washing her hands afterwards is bleargh.

I am surprised the restaurant staff didn't approach her... highly unhygienic. And NO thought for those dining around her. No manners at all. And didn't clean her hands afterwards...??? Hmm

I do about 16 nappies a day and my hands are washed thoroughly after every change. BASIC hygiene that.

what a skank

laInfanta · 31/03/2011 18:17

oops not you leroy, just the thought of changing a pooey nappy on a restaurant table!

mnistooaddictive · 31/03/2011 18:19

It depends on what was in it. If it was just wet then I don't see the problem.

sharbie · 31/03/2011 18:19

eeeeeeeeeeek er no

StealthPolarBear · 31/03/2011 18:21

jiust wet I don't care
Pooey (presumably) is disgusting

MalkieFraser · 31/03/2011 18:23

I saw a lady bfeeding her newborn, changing her nappy and perusing a menu in a restaurant once. I thought "kudos".

KathMCB · 31/03/2011 18:27

It was a wet nappy and the LO was three months old....

and there was a toilet but not sure if there was a baby change in it..I suspect not...it just made me think if I was being a bit over sensitive..I use a gel hand-wash thing when I am out and would use a baby change. Once in a pinch I did change my DD in the back of the car when she was five weeks old.

I have changed a nappy in a pram in a restaurant as there was no changing facilities. Nobody even blinked an eye ..Ok I didd't wave the (wee) nappy round my head , and I was in a corner ..... yes I did wash my hands afterwards. I have also changed nappies on my knee on a plane when alone and dd1 was a toddler so 2 in an aeroplane loo was just impossible to think about . In this case I used gel afterwards on my hands until I could get to a sink.

OnEdge · 31/03/2011 18:29

I change nappies on my knee, but am very careful where I do them and discreet. Would do a wee one if no one was looking. I do use a sanitising gel for my hands until I can get to a sink.

YANBU

emsyj · 31/03/2011 18:30

If I had done that (which I never did) DD would have marked the moment by peeing all over me.

YANBU. Ewwwwww.

amberleaf · 31/03/2011 18:32

What would you suggest she should have done?

TattyDevine · 31/03/2011 18:32

3 month is practically newborn and wee only makes a difference. I wouldn't do it but I wouldn't be offended enough to post about it either, to be honest.

flyingspaghettimonster · 31/03/2011 18:32

I've had to do the nappy on a plane thing when my lovely toddler had explosive up-the-back-out-the-neck diarrhoea :-( I felt terrible for those sat next to me, but those toilets are not designed for changing babies and anyway, he'd have leaked poop up the aisle. He did it 3 times - loooooong flight and he was wearing just my cardi by the time we got off... I still got up to wash hands each time though... who doesn't wash their hands?? bleurgh.

MichaelaS · 31/03/2011 18:34

depends what the other options were.... in some restaurants there are no baby changing facilities and your only option is to lie them on a cold marble floor (for example). if i took sufficient offence at this i might consider changing the baby in the middle of the restaurant and explaining in a loud voice why there was nowhere else to do it!

I did change my son's dirty nappy in his pram in a hospital corridor once - we were waiting for 2+ hours for an appointment for him, it was wall to wall screaming young children and if you left your place when they called you you would not get seen. Sometimes there are no better options!

shaz298 · 31/03/2011 18:35

I think the biggest issue is that she didn't clean her hands (unless she used sanitiser?)

It's amazing how many people don't even wash their own hands properly after going to the loo, so I'm not really surprised. The number of people I see running their finger tips under the cold tap and then drying them as if the germs have gone !!!

squeakytoy · 31/03/2011 18:35

If it was just a wet nappy, there would be no need for the mum to even get into contact with any nasty germs... in fact, she would be more likely to have picked extra germs up off the handles as she came out of the toilet doors.. Wink
