I was out for lunch last week and a mum changed her baby's nappy (while on her knee) at the table........is this normal/acceptable? I just don't think its hygienic...I didn't say anything but she ate her sandwich afterwards....

I don't think I have ever been to a cafe that hasn't had baby changing.... But they probably do exist....

I would have assumed she did this as it was quicker and more convenient for her than traipsing to the loo, but it is possible that there were no facilities. I would not return to a cafe that didn't have baby changing and would not change DD on my knee for fear of her peeing on me. She did a massive Mr Whippy poo just as DH was changing her this morning - nappy roulette is not the game for me, this woman was either brave or foolish!

Well if I change a wet nappy I still clean babies bottom with a wipe therefore coming into contact with urine and any other germs which happen to be sitting there waiting to strike!.

Sorry, don't mean to be rude but attitudes like that add to the tummy bug problems we have. Poor hygiene is the problem

Any you are right lots of germs on the toilet door. I usually use a paper towel when leaving a public toilet ( to open the handle) or I use hand sanitiser once I'm out, after having washed my hands beofr leaving the toilet - and no I don't have OCD but do have a child who is susceptible to gastro bugs!

emsyj · 31/03/2011 18:42

I would like to say also that doing toilet things at the table is just a bit yuk - even if it is baby wee, it's still bums and wee and I would rather not see or think about those things when eating tbh.

mousesma · 31/03/2011 18:44

In the circumstances you state i.e. wet nappy only and no baby change facilities its absoutely fine. However I do agree she should have washed her hands afterwards.

Actually I don't think even a pooey nappy would bother me its not like its going to actually come into contact with the other diners and I wouldn't expect anyone to have to change a baby on a toilet floor.

Reminds me of a hilarious explosive poo nappy changing incident of my tantruming 1.5yr old boy whilst myself pregnant and in a train loo with being thrown about and the loo door swishing open (forgot to lock in my hurry) to a queue of folk waiting for loo, all whilst my completely oblivious husband was calmly reading a book in comfort 5 meters away. It even involved a tutting old lady......and evil staring looks from the man who had to go into the smell after my lovely experience (I did at least clean up after).

Damn hilarious..in answering your question, erm no I'm one for using the loo for changing.

I have the thinking that breastfeeding should be where everyone else eats with modesty, and nappies well they get done where everyone else erm "takes 5 minutes".

StealthPolarBear · 31/03/2011 18:44

shaz - I don't if it's just a wee nappy and I am somewhere i'd rather not be changing a nappy iyswim
In general I clean bum after a wee but if I'm out and about and the facilities are a bit grim it;s one off and one on
or in the middle of the night

StealthPolarBear · 31/03/2011 18:45

but I agree she should have washed her hands

FourFortyFour · 31/03/2011 18:47

YABU.

She could have used the cleaning gel.

overmydeadbody · 31/03/2011 18:48

YABU if it was just a wet nappy and the baby was only 3 months old.

I'd have probably done the same. And as for washing hands aftrwards, you can change a wet nappy without touching anything unhygienic, the door handle to the cafe and the back of the chair you pulled out to sit on are probsbly more germ infested.

If having oral sex is acceptable than eating after changing you baby's wet nappy is also acceptable. Far less chance of germs spreading.

I wash my hands after using public toilets because of other people's germs all over the doors/handles etc. etc. more than from possible germs I gave myself.

MichaelaS · 31/03/2011 18:52

isn't wee sterile unless you have a bladder infection?

granted, the skin around probably isn't!

overmydeadbody · 31/03/2011 18:52

I do that with the tissue too chaz, and then use hand gel.

overmydeadbody · 31/03/2011 18:53

Yes Michaela, but old wee might have been exposed to germs, it's only sterile when it just comes out of you.

xstitch · 31/03/2011 18:58

I don't think you should change a nappy at a table. Years ago I was in restaurant in London. The waiter asked a mother to stop breast feeding. I stood up for her. She then put the baby on the table and changed the nappy. When I then complained the waiter siad he could do nothing. Our table was next to the bathroom doors and they were at the next table to us.

MichaelaS · 31/03/2011 19:56

Shock at asking the mum to stop bf... when i was bf i was just waiting for someone to challenge me so i could say "sure, after all the larger people with less pressing needs have stopped eating and drinking too" or some other smart remark. But noone ever did - darn this tolerant society!
