to leave DS2 whilst I nip across the road

He's fast asleep, can't get out of his room. Have to meet DS1 from the bus across the road, literally opposite.

He's 2yo, been at nursery this morning and is zonked.

No, don't leave him. He's only 2.

Thomcat · 31/03/2011 15:07

What if he wakes?
Are you so near that the house never goes out of sight?

exhausted2011 · 31/03/2011 15:07

can you see your front door from the bus stop?

winnybella · 31/03/2011 15:07

I would if it'll be literally a minute or two.

Thomcat · 31/03/2011 15:08

If it's lieterally opposite the house, and I mean literally then it can't be any worse than hanging washing out int he garden surely?

manicinsomniac · 31/03/2011 15:08

if it's literally across the road as in, step out of dr, cross road, at bus stop then yes.

If it's across the road and up or down a bit then no.

FanillaFudge · 31/03/2011 15:08

House is in a funny position so can't see it, can see the bushes though.

He will be in such a bad mood if I wake him.

Lawm01 · 31/03/2011 15:09

Ooh, I wouldn't. The likelihood of anything bad happening is miniscule, but a possibility nonetheless. If he is so zonked, can you not gently pick him up and carry him while he stays asleep?
I suspect there is probably some legislation that would make this child abandonment/neglect? Might be wrong, but even if it is perfectly legal, I don't think its wise.

FanillaFudge · 31/03/2011 15:10

I'm 8 months pregnant and he is heavy!

It's rural, virtually no cars on the road

OP posts:
FanillaFudge · 31/03/2011 15:10

I have 3 mins to decide... will leave it slightly longer so I'm not hanging around waiting for the bus.

OP posts:
chocadoodle · 31/03/2011 15:11

I wouldn't, but my DS is pfb so maybe I'm just extra cautious.

MorticiaAddams · 31/03/2011 15:11

If it's literally across the road then you should be able to see the bus stop from your front door and wave to him from there.

I wouldn't leave the 2 year old in case he wakes up.

Megatron · 31/03/2011 15:11

How old is DS1? If he is old enough to catch a bus on his own can he cross a very quiet road?

Onetoomanycornettos · 31/03/2011 15:12

I used to put the bins/rubbish out which was about 50 yards away from the house, I couldn't carry it all and two children, so used to shut the door and sprint very fast, dump the stuff and run back. Probably wrong, but I couldn't work out how to carry things which needed two hands plus take all the children. Our car also used to be positioned so you couldn't see the front door and again, transferring two sleeping children always used to leave one of them on their own for a minute whilst I rushed back to get them (leaving the other in the house). I was on my own a lot and never could understand how people managed it.

So, if the bus stop is literally seen from your window, and you can secure your house, I would personally find that safer than taking a crying two-year old accross the road and collecting an older child. But it is a judgement call, I don't know how single parents/on your own all day manage with several children without leaving one behind for a moment or two.

FanillaFudge · 31/03/2011 15:12

He's just 5yo... I have to be at the door of the bus else they don't let him off

OP posts:
Sirzy · 31/03/2011 15:13

I wouldn't. Or if you have to I would wait until
I could see the bus then quickly run out

DilysPrice · 31/03/2011 15:14

Do it, but perhaps leave phone on ringing your mobile IYSWIM.

FanillaFudge · 31/03/2011 15:14

Becaue of the position of the house I can't see the bus.

I'm going for it

OP posts:
Sirzy · 31/03/2011 15:15

If you aren't close enough you can see the bus I wouldn't

Megatron · 31/03/2011 15:15

Ah at 5 your DS1 is much too young to cross the road then, I would just stick DS2 in buggy and take him. If he's really shattered he might not even wake up.

EricNorthmansMistress · 31/03/2011 15:15

I would!

manicinsomniac · 31/03/2011 15:15

Run! It will be fine :)

doutzen · 31/03/2011 15:17

I would, you'll only be outside for a few minutes
Could you get a neighbour to watch your house for the few minutes and listen in?

Onetoomanycornettos · 31/03/2011 15:18

I've never quite understood why people think it's safer to take children where there are cars, so across the road here with a sleepy child seems less safe to me than a heavily sleeping child left for one min, similarly in garages, people often say they take their children with them to pay, but I've always thought that its safer for them to remain in the car (locked) rather than traipse across where the cars are driving.

Chil1234 · 31/03/2011 15:19

NEVER ask this question on MN unless you want to be branded the same as someone who leaves the 5 year-old with a remote control and a can opener and buggers off to Ibiza for fortnight....
