to think that the nursery manager shouldn't have washed a child's comfort item?

I work in a nursery and the manager took it upon herself to wash a child's comforter (cuddly rabbit) because a staff member said it smelled.
The staff member has no children, manager has.
I protested and said that they couldn't wash it because it wouldn't smell the same for the child and that it was also very judgemental. I wwas over-ruled and the manager put it in the washing machine and said "tell the parent that milk was spilt on it"
I was Shock
As a parent, i would have felt judged. I know that DD would have protested at having her comforter washed and she is 14.
What do you think? Would you have washed it or not?

What would bother me most is what Lemonsole said , the fact that this person who is in charge of a building full of little people obviously has NO idea why comforters are so important!

Some of the comforters I see are literally disgusting - covered in snot, stains and stink. But as an early years provider myself, I would not wash the item myself for fear of offending the parents. However, that said, some look so bad they are a health hazard anyway and I would maybe telephone a parent and say "oh xxx sneezed all over it today, (or dragged through mud etc etc) so I thought I would pop it in the wash if ok with you"

and hope they say yes....
