Washing up bowls make me wonder.

I can't actually see the point.

What's your position on bowels?

Bowels?

Grin

I find mine very useful thanks!

Bowls however, weird. Just empty everything out before you fill up the sink, surely?

SlightlyJaded · 27/03/2011 23:56

on bowels - pretty essential Grin

On bowls - absolutely pointless. Hate them. Don't have one. Don't see the point and was going to post the same question only yesterday :)

suzikettles · 27/03/2011 23:57

I like to rinse things like glasses and only have a single sink, so I wash up in the bowl and rinse things under the tap down the side of the bowl.

I suppose I could wash up everything and then empty out the sink and rinse the stuff I want to rinse, but that would be a faff.

AuntiePickleBottom · 27/03/2011 23:57

the bowl is where i wash up ( not that often as i have a dishwasher)

the sink is where i use chemical such as bleach, flash empty dirty water

IloveJudgeJudy · 28/03/2011 00:05

Washing up bowls are very useful things, particularly if you've forgotten to empty the saucepan before you wash it up. You can tip the water down the side of the bowl instead of into the washing up water.

FudgeGirl · 28/03/2011 00:06

Nasty, horrible things.

Never felt this way til I met OH - he hates washing up bowls.

Thinking about it, they always used to be all grimy and nasty underneath (or maybe it was my ex who always did the washing up who never kept it very clean) but I can honestly say I've not missed having one for the past few years.

I (or the cleaner) still bleach the sink to keep it clean but it isn't used for washing up often as we have a dishwasher. Any dirty water (ie mop bucket) goes straight down the downstairs loo. Mucky stuff like the dog bowls gets washed in the utility room sink.

worraliberty · 28/03/2011 00:07

Yes they're so you can tip anything like tea slops or just whatever down the plug hole when you're washing up.

Also I break a lot more stuff without the fairly soft bowl for some reason.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 28/03/2011 00:07

bowels - hahahahhaa

Sorry Chaos [wunk] Grin

Driftwood999 · 28/03/2011 00:08

I use the sink without a bowl to wash up. Having said that, I have kept all the bowls for other purposes. Camping. Dolly/teddy bath. Sick bowl. Thankfully not all at once.

MaisyMooCow · 28/03/2011 00:09

I love my bowl, wouldn't be without it. Don't have a dishwasher though so that's probably why!

TheAtterySquash · 28/03/2011 00:10

Bowl useful for catching water from rinsing veg etc to then tip onto garden. Not manky if you make a point of keeping it clean.

Skinit · 28/03/2011 00:14

I hate them....DH saw reason when I explained how manky they are.

Tortington · 28/03/2011 00:15

i can't tell you how much i don't give a shit

carry on

Crappy old sink in crappy old kitchen of new house had no plug. So it was a bowl or nothing. I hate 'em.

BertieBotts · 28/03/2011 00:22

I always had one as my mum always used one but hated how manky it got all the time. I think it was flylady (which I never managed to keep up) and the "shine your sink!" that made me realise actually what is the point, I might as well throw this away!

Kim & Aggie like them though. They say you break stuff more clattering it about in a metal sink. I disagree but then I don't tend to have a sinkful of things - I just pick stuff up off the side to wash it one by one. If it's dried on and doesn't want to wash straight away then I just leave it soaking while I wash the next few things.

If I forget to drain something then I just drain it afterwards and leave it for next time.

Another thing I like about not using one is that I really really hate sinkfuls of cold, greasy water where things have been left to soak for hours. Soaking for 20 minutes to an hour, fine, any longer and it's disgusting. Not using a bowl negates this as I will need to use the sink before long so need to take the water out if the washing up gets abandoned.

allsquareknickersnofurcoat · 28/03/2011 00:39

my kitchen plug broke, so I bought a bowl rather than fixing it Grin

stressheaderic · 28/03/2011 00:47

As an aside, folk who have their washing up bowl horizontally puzzle me. Vertical all the way

DollyTwat · 28/03/2011 00:53

I think it used to be one of those things you could always tell a single bloke (and no female infulennce) by the absence of a
a washing up bowl
cushions
matching towels
but of in the day of the dishwasher there is no need for one

Morloth · 28/03/2011 00:56

It is a very English thing isn't it? I never did figure out what they were for.

DollyTwat · 28/03/2011 00:57

it's to save your sink from being scratched, but I don't do any washing up now so I don't have one
but I have LOTS of cushions
and what are they for?

Livinginoz · 28/03/2011 05:46

They don't have them over here! I had to search for ages to find one. Ended up buying something called a "laundry bowl" which is square and fits in our sink.

How do you empty half drunk cups of tea if your sink is full of washing up water? Hmm

I always keep mine lovely and clean and never leave things to soak for more than an hour! Smile

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 28/03/2011 05:48

My Mum's got one, Living, I'll ask her where she found it if you like? But everyone I know has a double sink, or at least 1-and-a-half, so it's completely unnecessary.
