me and my dh are having a right old 'debate' about whether ice cream for under 5s is ok.

i think it is basically harmless to have as a treat. dh thinks it is unacceptable. i think he is being a bit ott.

aibu or is he?

dh here
the only reason anybody even eats ice cream or any of the other synthetic sugary products is because some nice shiny colourful advert told us to,.... and then word spreads across the playground. Under 5's are quite happy and fulfilled enough without corporate-refined sugar being brandished in front of them as some sort of happiness enhancer.

It's hardly mean to deprive them of a bucketload of E numbers as under 5's....they get plenty of fun hanging out and kicking a ball around. Giving in is just a guilt softener cos i've spent too much time typing on blog sites and not enough time outdoors kicking a ball around.

I'll be here all week. please tip your waiter

ds2 had a barney cause we were all magnum ice creams and he didn't have one - he was 7months and grabbed mine off me, cue v.cute pics of messy baby thoroughly enjoying his first taste of ice cream and chocolate!! i wouldn't have chosen this scenario - i avoided chocolate and ice cream with ds1 till he was at least 12months cause of the sugar content. you can't predict and plan every baby/toddler experience with military precision!

foreverondiet · 27/03/2011 18:51

What a meany. Fine as a treat, esp something like a minimilk, not fine if daily. I'd let DS2 (age 11 months) have some licks if DD and DS1 having ice cream.

Am laughing at "under 5s"..... trying to imagine what 4 year old DS1 would say if we all (or even his big sister) were eating ice cream but he was too young!

caughtinanet · 27/03/2011 18:52

peanutsdh - now I think you're even more bonkers.

peanutdream · 27/03/2011 18:53

aaaarrrrrgggghhhhhh its me

i think he is being soooooooo U

Foodzilla.

Violethill · 27/03/2011 18:54

Your DH sounds like a right killjoy

Eglu · 27/03/2011 18:54

I would let an under 1 have ice cream, never mind an under 5.

I think that mini milks are best for small children. They don't melt too quickly and they aren't too big.

piprabbit · 27/03/2011 18:55

So the weather is hot, the ice cream is cold and your DC is learning all sorts of valuable lessons and skills relating to hot vs. cold, melting, stickiness, textures and sensations. Or not, in your case.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 27/03/2011 18:55

Goodness, I'm off to sit myself in the naughty corner. My 3yo asks to go to a particular 'restaurant' (Toby Carvery!) because of the ice cream she invariably gets for dessert!

SecretNutellaFix · 27/03/2011 18:56

the only thing that is going to open the gateways to a sugar habit is to restrict it.

Oh, and for your information, the reason I eat ice cream is becasue I like the taste and texture of it, not becasue some advertiser tells me to.

remove the stick from your arse and unclench ffs.

peanutdream · 27/03/2011 18:56

lol piprabbit

violethill i know Confused

minimilks is a good idea

OP posts:
freshmint · 27/03/2011 18:56

tell him to go to his local co-op and not come home until he finds an e number in a minimilk.

he'll be gone a long time, long enough to feed your baby some ice-cream AND have a cup of tea AND catch up on the latest episode of Glee before they throw him out at closing time Grin

GwendolineMaryLacey · 27/03/2011 18:57

And her first taste of ice cream was the Magnum she stole from me at Center Parcs when she was just over 6 months old Blush

peanutdream · 27/03/2011 18:57

he's not usually - he appears to have a bee in his bonnet about this which is a bit bizarre - i don't get it - hence me posting this!

TheSkiingGardener · 27/03/2011 18:58

Peanutsdh, I eat ice cream because it tastes nice. I prefer proper ice cream, which isn't corporate ultra refined sugar. How do you explain that in view of your advertising theory?

My DS has not seen ice cream adverts, yet likes ice cream. Likewise, can you explain that please.

You seem to have a bit of a food hang up.

foreverondiet · 27/03/2011 18:58

catchmeifyoucan · 27/03/2011 18:58

It's an ice cream for the love of mercy not a line of cocaine!! OP your DH needs to get a grip, chill out, stop being a killjoy and stop inflicting his own foody-OCD onto a small child.

freshmint · 27/03/2011 18:58

Oh and ask him to think about what your very verbal 5 year old ds will say when he DOES have ice-cream for the first time and realises what his bastard father has been making him miss all these years.

Now that, my friend, is a fast route to obesity...

NoWayNoHow · 27/03/2011 18:59

Good grief, your DH wouldh ave a fit if he knew how many ice creams DS has had. Think he had his first cone when he was about 16/17 months too.

Your poor DS, tell your DH to stop being so miserable, ice cream is best served to under 5's!

As the saying goes - everything in moderation...

Mishy1234 · 27/03/2011 19:01

Ice cream is fine in moderation. I wouldn't give an 18 month old chocolate or sweets, but I would let them have ice cream.

piprabbit · 27/03/2011 19:01

It is however acceptable to tell small children that the ice cream van only plays a tune when it has run out of ice cream. Especially when it comes round everyday (rain, snow or sun) about 45 minutes before tea.

ashamedandconfused · 27/03/2011 19:02

plenty of kids lollies etc are free from nasty e numbers and the like, some even have added vitamins!

get him to make them himself from smoothie/fromage frais/diluted juice, then he can't moan surely?

freshmint · 27/03/2011 19:03

if he is so anal why don't you get an ice-cream maker and make it yourself with organic milk and strawberries etc
then he can complain neither about e numbers nor about corporate brainwashing (wtf?)

SmethwickBelle · 27/03/2011 19:03

I can't remember the last time minimilks were even advertised. They're just perfect for small hands. Although rather prone to falling off the stick if its warm I've noticed.
