AIBU in thinking my land is my garden so p off

We live on some land. Caught some people taking a short cut through to the next set of field which back onto their house. They has to go through 2 sets of closed gates to do it. Why do people think that just because its a set of fields, its not someone's garden/private property. We are now putting a huge sign up (hope that helps). AIBU in thinking people whould respect our property?

It's not always obvious tbh.

SecretNutellaFix · 27/03/2011 17:45

it's not a public right of way through your garden is it?

activate · 27/03/2011 17:46

I'd double check there's no public right of way and then put up your signs

which should be polite and informative if you're in the right

creaseistheword · 27/03/2011 17:47

No there is no public right of way, its closed fields.

I'd shoot 'em up the bottom shouting 'Gerrof my land', Carry On stylee, if I were you.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 27/03/2011 17:50

YANBU. That would piss me right off. I'd consider electric fencing

creaseistheword · 27/03/2011 17:52

Its quite scary to just see someone wandering at the back of your fence tbh

Glad I live in Scotland where there's a right of access for everyone who isn't causing damage. A field isn't a garden and so long as they pass through quickly I don't see why there is any problem with that.

creaseistheword · 27/03/2011 17:53

it is our garden..we own it and its fenced off and our house backs onto it.

This is how wars start!

AgentZigzag · 27/03/2011 17:57

Where are the people coming from/going to?

If it's not clear it's your land and they shouldn't be on it, you can't really blame them for not knowing.

But I like 52girls blunderbuster idea, especially if you can muster a mad twinkle in your eye.

creaseistheword · 27/03/2011 17:59

It doesnt sit alongside a road or path, you would have to go through quite a few fields to get to it. They were cutting through quite a few.
Its a security issue as well. Its the same as suddenly seeing a strange man in your back garden.

JaneS · 27/03/2011 18:01

Plant something in it. People might be more likely to treat it as a garden then?

creaseistheword · 27/03/2011 18:01

Its covered in trees and plants and has a rope swing and playset...the lot!

Shotgun?

Release the hounds?

Yanbu

creaseistheword · 27/03/2011 18:03

We were very polite and told these latest we could see they were "lost" and let them come up through the house back to the main road so they could find their way to their own house
Large sign goes up tomorrow :)

I've got horses on a 6 acre field in a semi-rural area (used to be more rural) and I've had this mental debate with myself. When I first got the land, I was very much "Get off my land" but now I'm of the opinion that as long as they are just passing and not causing any trouble/actually having a picnic, I will tolerate it and leave them in peace. Noblesse oblige rather than nouveau riche. The countryside code used to be that people were allowed to walk along field edges as long as they didn't harm crops, closed gates, didn't let dogs runs loose, drop litter, worry livestock, etc.. Everyone knew that and I've often benefitted from walking or riding along the edge of farmer's fields, or in stubble fields.

If it started developing into a shortcut, I would probably try to stop it with fencing and signs. IMHO if you don't have sign, a lot of people wouldn't guess they weren't allowed there.

However, what I will NOT tolerate is someone exercising their dog off the lead in my field when my horses are in it!!!

creaseistheword · 27/03/2011 18:04

nijinsky does your house lie on your land?

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 27/03/2011 18:05

This may work.

Asinine · 27/03/2011 18:05

A few man traps will sort them out.
Or get a scary looking bull.

nijinsky · 27/03/2011 18:05

Added to clarify - I will not tolerate exercising of dogs AT ANY TIME in my field, whether theres anything in it or not!

creaseistheword · 27/03/2011 18:06

I love that sign soupdragon
on the list it goes

SoupDragon · 27/03/2011 18:08

Make a few fake legs out of stuffed trousers with shoes attached, add red paint and leave them scattered about.

nijinsky · 27/03/2011 18:09

creaseisthword - It does - it connects to my house. There is a parking area, and then the field. My garden is at the sides and back of the house. How much land do you have? Is it land or garden? If its obviously cultivated garden, then thats different, I agree that is part of your house. How close to your house did they come?
