AIBU in thinking my land is my garden so p off

We live on some land. Caught some people taking a short cut through to the next set of field which back onto their house. They has to go through 2 sets of closed gates to do it. Why do people think that just because its a set of fields, its not someone's garden/private property. We are now putting a huge sign up (hope that helps). AIBU in thinking people whould respect our property?

ROFL at ASNININE - Is there any other kind?

creaseistheword · 27/03/2011 18:12

We have the house with small garden and back fence which has a gate onto the field. It is landlocked apart from access through our back. It is 7 acres and has stables, play stuff, a wooded area, fruit trees, 3 vege patches, tractor shed. The lower boundary backs onto the train lines (very high fence). The people walk along the house fence so only a few metres from the house.

SOUPDRAGON that would work a treat with ASNINES scary looking bull. Grin

Driftwood999 · 27/03/2011 18:14

Sentries, cctv, dogs, moat and drawbridge or get into the spririt of what meala experiences in Scotland. If they are your neighbours, I would begin by acknowledging they were seen crossing your field. You "caught" them, does that mean you had a confrontation?

creaseistheword · 27/03/2011 18:15

They live a few streets away (or so they said). never met them before.
We didnt confront..see previous post. :)

If you know someone with a shotgun, make some kind of "beware! Shooting range!" sign and pepper it with bullet holes before putting it up.

grovel · 27/03/2011 18:19

Shotgun.

SudashesaliveItakeyoutoher · 27/03/2011 18:19

Or, put up a sign saying "Never google Dragon Butter"

They will go home and google it and you won't see them again.

Skinit · 27/03/2011 18:21

My sishas a similar problem with tourists traipsg through her meadow as it lies off a very pretty lane and next to an ancient church....she' gets a bit Farmer Giles about it...though I don't blame her at all!

I said "Whack a "Tea and homemade Scones" sign out and charge em' a tenner a head for tesco's scones!

She was a bit Hmm though I would be tempted!

She stuck a sign up...it worked.

SoupDragon · 27/03/2011 18:23

I have to say that footpaths can be very poorly signposted. I"m sure I've wandered incorrectly over land before. A simple polite sign should sort it.

Although the other options are so much more entertaining.

ChaoticAngelofDenial · 27/03/2011 18:27

Try this Grin

nijinsky · 27/03/2011 18:29

Its hard to envisage without seeing it but my guess would be that they were walking along the fence line so as not to offend. If they walked across the middle, that would be more wrong in terms of the countryside code and perhaps they didn't think to walk along the other side. Is your house screened by foilage? Did they pass quickly?

As I say, I find it hard to envisage the exact positioning. It does give you a bit of a fright if you think you are private and secluded and then suddenly you see people. OTOH this is a crowded land, and you have to respect your fellow human beings right of passage, if they are not doing anything harmful.

You didn't confront them anyway. The sign should do the job as they don't sound the nightmare, DOG EXERCISING, type.

I've seen people doing the Farmer Giles Gerrof My Land act and it makes me cringe. I have no difficulty in telling someone to shift if they are doing something wrong but going from one place to another as a one off, I will tolerate.

SudashesaliveItakeyoutoher · 27/03/2011 18:30

Ooh I know - put posters up of a big snarling dog (frothing at mouth if poss for extra effect) and say

'Have you seen Trixie ? - much missed family pet last seen in this area'

activate · 27/03/2011 18:30

you could googlemap it so we could actually see it you know

hopeful

creaseistheword · 27/03/2011 18:34

Its pretty obvious its private and attached to a house imo

Im wondering why, because my garden is slightly bigger, I should "just allow" people to run across it. Would people be happy if someone jumpes the fence and walked through their back garden?

OP posts:
ChaoticAngelofDenial · 27/03/2011 18:37

I wouldn't so I'm saying YANBU

nijinsky · 27/03/2011 18:43

creasistheword is it garden or land, as in part of a field that they walked through? (there is a distinction for Stamp Duty and CGT purposes when selling on land, not wishing to get all pedantic but it can't really be both).

Can't say YABU or not if its field and not garden they walked through. Its your land, its in England, so you can do what you like. Just personally I feel mean if I jump on people innocently crossing it quickly as a one-off (and if I wanted to totally avoid the possibility of other human beings that much, I'd live in the Highlands of Scotland or somewhere). If they do it again, YANBU to shoot them, of course!

orangeeyebrows · 27/03/2011 18:47

bearing in mind they were neighbours, i'd say you were being very unreasonable and precious

did it actually harm you that they deigned to walk on a piece of grass

creaseistheword · 27/03/2011 18:47

yes we do have two titles, although we have it set up as our garden and its pretty obvious . My kids play in the bit they walk across.

OP posts:
creaseistheword · 27/03/2011 18:47

They were not neighbours

OP posts:
creaseistheword · 27/03/2011 18:48

orangeeyebrows would you be ok with your neighbours walking across your back garden ?

not that these were btw

OP posts:
cumfy · 27/03/2011 20:42

I know the feeling.
I have a modest plot of land in the South West.
1000s of the bastards walking about.Hmm
Maybe I should invest in some signs.
