Ds wants it for his birthday. its £45 from amazon. I am happy to spend that much money, but would really rather not spend it on a box set of dvd's that will get scratched and unwatchable soon.
but
he really really wants it. Its not an unreasonable request. what he really wants are beats headphones, but at two hundred pounds plus, he knows he has no chance whatsoever of getting them.so has downgraded his request iyswim. He is going to be 14.
aibu to not want to waste money on them? or, do i accept that he is old enough and mature enough to know what he wants and is making a reasonable request?

look on ebay for them, also almost every charity shop has them too Grin

goodbyemrschips · 27/03/2011 11:15

Why will they get scratched and unwatchable soon, he is 14 not 4.

pinguwings · 27/03/2011 11:16

At 14 he should be responsible enough to not scratch the DVDs. If he really wants them and you can afford it then get them.

nope. coz i am rubbish at taking care of dvd's. in fact, i sort of missed out on dvds entirely. moving from videos to sky plus and online streaming seamlessly, skipping that entire phase of technology. :)

right, charity shops it is then.. thank you

£45 is bloody reasonable, considering how much the DVDs were a few years ago. IIRC, the boxset was once about £200 or thereabouts. You need to have a bit more faith in your DS I think.

RitaMorgan · 27/03/2011 11:30

You don't want him to have DVDs because you will break them?

ladysybil · 27/03/2011 11:35

rita, not quite. because we have never really done the dvd's or cd's thing, coz i wasn ever very good at taking care of them, the kids arent used to them. they may turn out to be amazing at taking care of them, but havent had the opppurtunity to do so.
okie, i shall get them for him.

Blimey, he is 14, not 4. Just because you are crap at taking care of your things, why should that mean your son is?

caughtinanet · 27/03/2011 11:50

I've never had a DVD that became unplayable through scratches - are you sure you understand how they work Grin

orangeeyebrows · 27/03/2011 11:51

i have some i never watch, oh hold on , will have to check if video or dvd - if dvds, he is welcome to them

Rosedee · 27/03/2011 12:06

I'm sure I saw it for £30 in hmv. I may be wrong though.

NettoSuperstar · 27/03/2011 12:08

How odd.

DD wants the same for her 10th birthday in August and I'm happy for her to have them.

Look on Play.com they are usually cheaper than amazon.

FabbyChic · 27/03/2011 12:25

Sorry its £52.00 on Play.com, and on eBay the cheapest is £49.99.

ladysybil · 27/03/2011 12:29

:)) thank you

UndiscoveredApprentice · 27/03/2011 12:32

I bought the entire box set from Morrisons at Christmas for £19.99.

Mandy2003 · 27/03/2011 12:35

YABU! Does he have a games console (Xbox or PS2 or 3)? As I recall (!) the games are supplied on...ta-da...disks!! So I bet he doesn't destroy those does he?

Perhaps I would be concerned if there were younger DCs in the house who might play frisbee with the disks but the OP hasn't said that.

But IMO the OP isn't being U on grounds of taste and decency (I've never liked Friends and can't see why anyone under the age of 30 might be tempted by it!?)

Rosedee · 27/03/2011 12:36

Ah I'm thinking I saw it for that price over Xmas as well now. Oh insane it now!

LDNmummy · 27/03/2011 12:42

Friends is awesome, I am currently going through a stage of re-watching every season from season 1. Now on season 8, accomplished within 2 months [I have too much time on my hands right now].

Get him the box set unless you really can't afford it. If you are worried about the discs getting scratched, I am sure you can rip them to your computer and back them up that way. Then if they ever get damaged you can just put them on new discs.

loopylou6 · 27/03/2011 12:49

download them from torrentman

ladysybil · 27/03/2011 12:55

loopy, exactly. lol, but i have raised a son who is ridiculously lawabiding, and i have to hide my music downloading activities from him... :(
whats wrong with just watching them on skyplus is what i say.... but, no he wants the box set, so i have got him it.
surely any self respecting teenager would prefer logitech speakers for his room? but, no. he doesnt. (probly coz he knows he will get told off by his dad for having them on at a decent level, and if he can only play loud musci when dad isnt at home, then he might as well use downstairs telly and music system)

I think your son is being completely reasonable. Just because you don't fancy getting them or wouldn't like to use DVDs yourself doesn't mean you shouldn't get them. At least he is decent enough to downgrade his request and not bang on about the £200 headphones instead!

Skyplus isn't the same. It would take him months to tape all the episodes and there is only so much memory on there anyway. It's nice to have a boxset and dip in and out of fave episodes. I am the same with my Sex And the City boxset. I don't want bits and bobs of episodes on Skyplus with ads in the middle that you have to fast forward.
