To think that having a dishwasher is more effort than washing up?

Because you have to load it and unload it and then put the dishes away.

Before we had one, I would wash up after each meal, dry then put away. Done and dusted.

Dh thinks iabu to not use it.

We put stuff in all day and then switch it on in the evening when it's full.

We never washed up as we went and it just meant loads of dishes sitting around until somebody washed them.

If we've got people round or at Christmas the dishwasher goes on two or three times a day.

haggis01 · 25/03/2011 14:17

I used to think that sometimes and would wash up instead of loading the dishwasher. However, then my family grew and my dishwasher broke down. Washing up for 7 or 8 people at each meal plus snacks etc is no fun at all. I love my dishwasher now - I use it at least twice a day.

wonkeydonkies · 25/03/2011 14:19

so cancel out putting dishes away, cos you do that for both

you put the dishes in then take them out

not really that hard is it, takes about 5 mins

I feel bereft when my dishy goes on the blink :(

AgentZigzag · 25/03/2011 14:20

Standing still for the age it takes to do the washing up is my most hated job.

It's not always possible to do the bits and bobs as you use them.

Plus I hate having dirty stuff out on the side, it's all tidied away out of sight in a dishwasher.

YANBU if you prefer washing up though, even if it makes you a bit of a weirdo Smile

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 25/03/2011 14:24

No it isn't.

LadyOfTheManor · 25/03/2011 14:28

DIshwashers are far more effective for those of us who don't have time to look like a Fairy advert.

Quenelle · 25/03/2011 14:31

YANBU. I tell myself the same because we don't have room for one.

CalamityKate · 25/03/2011 14:32

We had one and I stopped using it because it was such a faff.

I think if you've got a huge family and LOADS of crockery/cutlery, they're probably worth it but there are only 4 of us and by the time we'd filled it, we'd run out of plates etc.

It's far easier just to wash as you go, IMO.

silverangel · 25/03/2011 14:47

I love my dishwasher!

4FoxAche · 25/03/2011 14:50

I hate dishwashers.

I wash the dishes after each meal and it takes literally 10minutes out of my day.

Even less when dp is home at weekends because after I've cooked, he washes.

HE would be more than happy to have a dishwasher though!

ObscureReference · 25/03/2011 14:50

Yanbu. Run the sink while you are cooking and wash as you go. Train the children to take their plates to the sink, emptying leftovers first. We are a family of five and it takes literally minutes, including pots. Lunch is even easier.

OliPolly · 25/03/2011 14:52

Like Quenelle, I tell myself that tis a luxury becuase we don't have one.

I will find space for it though when I plan my new kitchen Smile

It is if you are like my MIL. She washes the dishes first because she can't believe the machine will do it properly. Then she puts them in the machine. Then when finished, she rinses them and dries them again in case there are any chemical residues.

LaWeasel · 25/03/2011 15:05

I think so.

It's starting to irritate me. Only had it 3 weeks!

kenobi · 25/03/2011 15:08

When it was just DD and I the dishwasher wasn't that useful, as by the time we filled it up the food had gone hard on the plate and it didn't wash properly.

With DD in existence and nanny there all day it's vital. I love it. MMMwah my darling dishy!

Meglet · 25/03/2011 15:12

yabu Shock.

It saves me loads of time. I have a slim-line DW and do one load a day.

It gets things far cleaner than I have the patience for (whisks, sieves, blender attachments etc).

BulletWithAName · 25/03/2011 15:38

I think they're pointless personally, unless you work or have 4+ kids.

IslaValargeone · 25/03/2011 15:41

I love mine. I only have one child and am a sahm :o

BlooferLady · 25/03/2011 15:42

YANBU. I think having a dishwasher is a sign of Moral Turpitude.

I also think this about lying in past 7am, sunbathing, and buying ready-made pastry Hmm

Isla if I were queen, I would have you tarred and feathered as An Example Grin

kenobi · 25/03/2011 15:43

Well I think having a dishwasher is a sign of Dick Turpin-tude.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 25/03/2011 15:45

Washing up is a waste of life.

I love the dishwasher. everything is nice and clean and it saves time. I have just baked a cake and it is wonderful to shove everything in rather than standing at sink washing up.

I have 3 children and we used to have a slim one. We didn't have one for a while as we were having an extension and I found that hard. When I grew up my parents had one in the 70's so i am used to them.

goingroundthebend4 · 25/03/2011 15:49

i want a dish washer and its not the cost of buying one its the work tahts needed so i can have one plumbed in
