To think that having a dishwasher is more effort than washing up?

Because you have to load it and unload it and then put the dishes away.

Before we had one, I would wash up after each meal, dry then put away. Done and dusted.

Dh thinks iabu to not use it.

I loathe washing up, and I love my dishwasher. My parents have had one every since I can remember though, so I have never been used to having to wash up after meals - just load the dishwasher!

I'm also a SAHM with only 1 child Grin

IslaValargeone · 25/03/2011 15:54

I feel I must add that I also own Marigolds and do wash up by hand when the need arises, just in case I have given the impression that I live the life of Riley. hides ready made pastry safely out of Bloofer's sight

Ishtar2410 · 25/03/2011 15:56

It's a personal thing - I definitely prefer life with a dishwasher. Have to say, though the emptying/reloading is a bone of contention between DH and me. Being a bit anal proving a point, I timed how long it would take to unload and it can be done in less than 8 minutes. Loading happens as and when we use things (theoretically).

If we didn't have a dishwasher I can guarantee washing up would happen approximately once a week and would take the better part of an afternoon. Don't ask me how I know... Smile

BlooferLady · 25/03/2011 15:56

Hmmmmm. All right Isla, I'll be sparing on the tar and we won't shave your head Wink

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/03/2011 15:59

YANBU. dishwashers are all steamy and hot and smell funny. I do not like them. neighbours are astonished that we arent having one in our new kitchen.

Sidge · 25/03/2011 16:05

I love my dishwasher.

It takes a lot less time to load it and unload it than it does to wash up.

Fill it throughout the day and after dinner, takes minutes.

Put it on overnight on an economy wash.

Unload first thing in the morning whilst the kettle is boiling - takes about 5 minutes.

Sidge · 25/03/2011 16:06

OhyoubadbadKitten you're not supposed to climb inside them when they're on you know! Grin

By the time they're finished they're not hot and steamy anymore.

PoisoningPigeonsInThePark · 25/03/2011 16:07

With three young DC with an inability to leave me alone for five minutes washing up piled up till late evening and was always a massive job both DH and I hated.

We also have regular family visitors who never helped wash up - meaning it seven plus to wash up after cooking meals and providing drinks and watch our DC too - now straight into dishwasher less than five minutes and all sorted cuts down on the resentment. Cooking with DC is less stressful as mess goes straight into dishwasher.

It's loaded through out day and unloading takes less than ten minutes but importantly a task that can be easily stopped and restarted - while washing up meant having refill sink with warm water.

It has been surprising since getting one to find so many people snooty about them - life to short to be buried by washing up surely.

Dear Piggyleroux,

If you don't want your dishwasher could you email it to me please. My address is: [email protected]
I could send you a small disgruntled cat by way of payment (as I am sick of hoovering up his hair).

All the best
Writer.

YABU. We have a dishwasher. My DH thought it was a luxury when we first moved in together, but after living a while without one (he moved in with me and I didn't have one) he realised that we did want/need one.

Valiumredhead, OP is not the only one I have ever heard of who prefers washing up. My DB and SIL don't have one. So, when they go around most people's houses, they don't have to wash up as we all have dishwashers, however, when we go to theirs, we have to wash up as they don't have one. They are having a new kitchen fitted at the moment, and I think it's a point of pride with them now that they won't have a dishwasher in there, either, even though it's in an extension and completely new. I can't understand it. I remember when my parents got a dishwasher, it stopped all the arguments about which DC was going to do the washing-up.

AnonymousBird · 25/03/2011 17:56

Hey????? Crikey, I just stuff it all in, it does the hard bit. Everything comes out absolutely spotless and bone dry. You have to put away whether you wash up or DW...

Takes a fraction of the time!!! I remember SIL being really shocked when we said we weren't having one, I though, oh don't be silly. But then we got one and I realised what she meant!!!!

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 25/03/2011 17:56

I hate washing up but cannot justify paying for the dishwasher tablets. They are so expensive!

curiositycat · 25/03/2011 17:56

a dishwasher is essential. I'd got without many many things before my dishwasher, including the kettle!

valiumredhead · 25/03/2011 18:00

They are only expensive if you buy expensive tablets ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts We only buy them when they are BOGOF!

togarama · 25/03/2011 18:06

I love dishwashers and loathe washing up by hand. I would give up the kettle, iron, TV, tumble dryer and possibly even the washing machine before I would give up the dishwasher....

In my renting days, I only ever chose places which had a dishwasher and when I bought, the icing on the cake was that all the fitted kitchen white goods were left including the dishwasher.

lubeybooby · 25/03/2011 18:06

My dishwasher has saved my sanity. Keeping the kitchen clear helps me keep on top of everything in the rest of the house. I could never make myself consistently wash up as I went along, but loading the dishwasher through the day and letting it run after dinner is the very easiest of peasy and has had a great effect on me. I love it.

MissJanuary · 25/03/2011 18:12

But don't dishwashers ruin all your good crockery and glassware?

HooverTheHamaBeads · 25/03/2011 18:13

I love our dishwasher and its soothing swish-swish of an evening.

It saved our marriage in 2002 when we got it.

Sidge · 25/03/2011 18:23

Alovelybunchofcoconuts the tablets don't have to be expensive.

I buy Lidls own brand (W47?) - they are about 1.75 for 30. Do the job!
