I don't know what to use!

I'm 38 with two DC...I reacted very badly to the pill as a younger woman...tried many kinds over the years and found they made me feel sick...put on weight etc..and hven't used it for about 8 years. I can't ABIDE the thought of a coil or an implant and assume the injection would make me sick like the pill.

After DC2 who is now 3 I went right off sex and so contraception was barely an issue...but now I'm back to myself and don't know what's best.

At the moment we use condoms but neither of us likes them and we had two occasions lst month where we failed to use them.(stupid)

What can I DO? Dh mntioned himself getting the snip but for some reaon I don't like the idea! I don't think he's that keen either.

i use the depo injection, had no weight gain, side effects which i had on the pill, i had the impant for 6 months i put on 2 stone! but my friend lost weight on it

IWillCountToThree · 25/03/2011 10:27

Copper coil here. I have PCOS and the pill really didn't agree with me so hormonal methods were out. It's fantastic, i can just do what i like and know i won't be pg!

I even concieved DS three days after my last one was removed. I had my current one put in when he was 8w and he's now 18m. I'm so much better with this than i ever was on hormonal contraception.

susall · 25/03/2011 10:28

Withdrawal for 13 years with out accidents, both pregnancies planned, didnt expect twins second time round and knowing my luck a third would result in triplets! I want a permanant method, even though withdrawal works for us, but DH goes white when I mention the snip even though I have been through two sections, one at 33 weeks so quite stressful. I dont think its fair that due to this I am left contemplating getting sterilized myself, I am finished my family and as its his body I cannot force the issue even though it would be the easiest route to take.

fastedwina · 25/03/2011 10:28

withdrawal or very occasionally condoms.

trumpton · 25/03/2011 10:29

DH had vasectomy at 35 ( DC3 was 1) I had hysterectomy 5 years later at 38 ( medical reasons) I am a belt and braces type !!.

No side effects for either of us. I really appreciated him having the op as had been on pill from 16 to 28 and did not want to use it again. We could have had 3 more DCs in that 5 years !!

Looby2k · 25/03/2011 10:30

Im not allowed hormonal contraceptions (I have a funky liver) and am also allergic to condoms so I use prayer cycle calender. Although Im currently 'inbetween' relationships so that makes it a whole heap easier :D

yama · 25/03/2011 10:37

Condoms until dh gets the Big V.

He offered - I would never push.

MickyLee · 25/03/2011 10:42

Ithink I quite like the name Muckylee Grin

Yes the patch does work with hormones I think

valiumredhead · 25/03/2011 10:53

Nothing, as ds had a vasectomy when he was 34 when ds was about 8 months old. It was VERY important I didn't get pregnant again so dh offered to get it done. I love him for that Grin

Before ds I used to take the pill, only for about 18 months though as I didn't like it. Then we used condoms for 10 years with no problems or mishaps at all.

redstripeyelephant · 25/03/2011 11:17

Copper coil for me, it's brilliant. Like IWillCountToThree, I have PCOS and don't want anything hormonal so it was the only option really.

I know the thought of fitting is a bit scary but honestly it's fine, especially if you've had normal births. I had one after DD1, had it taken out and conceived a month later, then I've just had one fitted again (DD2 is 9 months). Second time round the fitting was a lot easier, the nurse was chatting to me to distract me and I didn't even realise the doctor was finished! Just like a slightly longer smear test really (and nowhere near as bad as a cervical sweep!). Takes 10 mins and you don't have to think about contraception again for 10 years!

MizzyDizzy · 25/03/2011 11:24

DH had the snip last year...so am contraceptive free for the first time in nearly 30 years...excepting pregnancy...Yay! Grin

DH has had no problems with his vasectomy so far.

Before that I have used regular pill, mini pill, copper coil and mirena - not all at once though!

If I had to use anything again it would be the copper coil.

Pandamoanium · 25/03/2011 11:53

I was always ill when on the pill - terrible migraines etc. So I used a diaphragm for years with no problems at all. Now I don't need anything as I am past the menopause - hooray!

WhirlyGigs · 25/03/2011 12:04

Implant - not had it for long but loving it so far. No mood swings as my hormones are more constant. No headaches. Painless having it inserted (took 5 mins). Nothing to remember. Perfect!!

BaadRobot · 25/03/2011 12:10

I'm on Depo Provera injection, no problems apart from I've put on 3 STONE!! Was on pill when much younger, always made me feel sick so stopped it (tried 2 or 3 different ones). Hate condoms.

DriverDan · 25/03/2011 13:02

Copper coil here.

Have tried pills and implant in the past but after gaining at least a stone and a half on both I am through with hormonal contraceptives! I used to not like the idea of a coil but it really isn't bad having it fitted and I love not having the effects of all those extra hormones. I have slightly heavier periods but otherwise love my coil! It's the only contraceptive I've had where I can genuinely relax and forget about it.

Abcinthia · 25/03/2011 13:07

I'm on the mini-pill. I was on the combined pill for a while but I had some awful side effects so I was put on the mini-pill and I've been happy ever since.

TobyLerone · 25/03/2011 13:08

Withdrawal or occasionally condoms.

iamamug · 25/03/2011 13:09

Mirena coil here - used it for many years and have had Ds2 in between. Also had unrelated fibroid removed - had coil taken out for op, then conceived and after DS2 had it put back in.
I know it causes problems for some people but for me it has been wonderful.
I haven't bled for the best part of 9 years!
I think I am on my 3rd now - they last for 5 years.
No side effects for me.

bobanna · 25/03/2011 13:10

I have been using the withdrawal method for about 3 years now but would like to try a more reliable method.

copper coil and mirena users - how often do you have to have your coil checked by a nurse?
I find smears bad enough, so wouldn't like to have to have regular internals

ziva · 25/03/2011 13:15

looking forward to my tubal ligation in a few weeks.no putting hormones in my body or reaching for the condom or the aul whip it out method.

earlyriser · 25/03/2011 13:17

Can i ask what side effects you had with MYcro Gyron? (is that the right spelling??)

DriverDan · 25/03/2011 13:20

Copper coil- Never as long as you have no problems with it! I was told to check I can feel threads about once a month (very easy to feel yourself) and as long as I have no concerns I don't need to see anyone until I want it removed/need a new onw. I have a 10 year one so don't need to worry for another 9 years 5 months Grin
