to drink alcohol a day after finishing antibiotics that say DO NOT DRINK

I've been on Metranidazole for 5 days, took the last tablet yesterday morning. The literature says do not drink for 48 hours, it's been 34 hours, I've had a bugger of a day and I am gasping for a Wine!

Is the 48 hours a bit of a CYA for the drug manufacturers? Has anyone here had a drink within the 48 hours and had a reaction?

Yeast doesn't get killed by antibiotics. If it did then every course I have ever taken wouldn't result in a thrush attack.

Metronidazole affects your liver function, therefore drinking on it really is dangerous.

Gemsy83 · 24/03/2011 18:03

I drank once when on antibiotics (I forgot) and puked my guts up at 4am. Still prob helped me lose some of the calories I ingested

squeakytoy · 24/03/2011 18:03

Sorry, didnt explain that well at all (one eye on the hob)... AB's kill all the good and bad bacteria in our body, which normally keeps yeast at bay, so the yeast multiplies (hence the reason so many people get thrush), and alcohol contains yeast, therefore adding to the problem, as well as giving the AB's more work to do in your body.

brettgirl2 · 24/03/2011 18:04

Do you also avoid bread then?

chopchopbusybusy · 24/03/2011 18:05

Squeaky, drinking while taking anti biotics is fine, but not on metronidazole. I had the misfortune to be taking these over Christmas and new year! I didn't drink for 3 days after I'd finished the course.

SauvignonBlanche · 24/03/2011 18:07

Go on - try it! Let us know what happens.
(I wouldn't BTW Wink)

FanellaFox · 24/03/2011 18:11

I wouldn't

Not sure why there is always such an urgency to get intoxicated. Just have a bath and a bar of chocolate?

mathanxiety · 24/03/2011 18:18

It used to be thought that it worked like disulfiram which is used to treat alcoholism by making patients really nauseous if they drink, but the same mechanism is not necessarily at play according to more recent research, though the effects are similar. Bottom line is follow the directions.

I have always found that drinking after antibiotics resulted in horrible yeast problems, so better to eat a lot of yogurt before flooding your system with yeast (i.e. wait even longer than 48 hours).

unfitmother · 24/03/2011 19:19

Even longer than 48hrs?
Imagines OP swooning!

mathanxiety · 24/03/2011 19:33

Smile but who wants thrush?

oopslateagain · 24/03/2011 19:46

Nooo I can't wait longer than that - I opened a bottle of red wine on Saturday to make spag bol (half a glass in the stock). It has been sitting there ALL FARKIN WEEK, lurking next to the microwave.

I keep visiting it to remind it that I love it, really I do, I just can't be properly friendly with it right now. Grin

I have popped round the corner shop tonight and bought a Boost bar instead.

Somehow it's not the same. Sad

Stephen Fry said it's so you don't get drunk and sex Grin

Obviously as everyone has said, this one actually is a problem not just to stop you having sex.

IlsaLund · 24/03/2011 20:05

I wouldn't - when I was prescribed Metranidazole the pharmacist told me to hold my breath when I passed the pub Grin incase the fumes effected me.

FabbyChic · 24/03/2011 20:09

Surely drinking is not that important to you, having a stressful day is not an excuse to use alcohol as a crutch.

DitaVonCheese · 24/03/2011 20:14

My dad was a GP (retired, not struck off!) and has always told me that it is only the old ABs that you needed to avoid alcohol with and they are rarely prescribed any more.

wanttosqueezeyou · 26/12/2014 21:07

For anyone else who faces this dilemma.

I've just nailed several mulled wines (with brandy), precisely 24 hours after finishing my course of metronidazole. Pleased to report no problems at all. Cheers!

TheMuppetsSingChristmas · 26/12/2014 21:29

I know your post is light in tone but I think fabby has a point, do you really feel the need to drink that strongly, really? Surely this is just a vent? (I hope)

Chocolatefudgebrownieicecream · 26/12/2014 21:34

Pleased to hear it squeeze!

wowfudge · 26/12/2014 22:22

To add to all the 'don't do its' DP had a mouthful of wine the evening 24 hours after he finished a course of metrowhatsit and was sick. Not recommended at all.

NoodieRoodie · 26/12/2014 22:39

I'm pleased that I now have a note on file stating that I cannot take metronidazole as it makes me sick.

I was prescribed it by the dentist once and when I went back the next morning to say it wasn't agreeing with me he asked if I'd been drinking. I pointed out that although I do enjoy a drink I'd started being sick after the first dose (10am ish) and normally I don't start my drinking until at least 8pm so doubted it was that!

HerrenaHarridan · 26/12/2014 23:03

A friend of mine who is a chef was on Antabuse, he had to stop taking it when his sober self managed to get him a job in a kitchen. Poured a bottle of wine into a large simmering pot and reflexively leaned over and inhaled deeply. He turned bright red, passed out and started vomiting. He was rushed to hospital but was absolutely fine fortunately.

Probably best to wait op

CleverCircusFlea · 27/12/2014 00:42

I'd say it's safe to have that Merlot now, three and a half years after finishing the course Wink

spidey66 · 27/12/2014 00:58

thevisitor you ain't supposed to drink on amitriptiline but I'm on 30 mgs and do. In fact I've had a few this evening. But I rarely have drug side effects.

I'm a nurse I should know better.

wanttosqueezeyou · 27/12/2014 09:28

I'm not sure circus maybe give it until New year!?

DropYourSnow · 27/12/2014 09:33

I'm with wanttosqueeze you, best be on the safe side! Grin
