Maybe it's a generation thing, but I always thought computer games were for children

C&G, you're not my friend are you?

CheeseandGherkins · 24/03/2011 00:32

Erm, depends who you are :o

CheeseandGherkins · 24/03/2011 00:33

Ah just read up, can't be, no twins here :)

confuddledDOTcom · 24/03/2011 00:37

LOL I saw the twins thing just after I posted, was just funny you posting what you did after me.

There used to be an MN guild called AIBU(!) but not sure whatever happened to it.

coinoperatedgirl · 24/03/2011 00:53

I think the internet/forums are far more addictive than games. Sadly I can't play any pc games as my poor laptop is so shit. Dp likes Wow and lotr, sadly he got to the highest level in wow and his account was continually hacked and stolen .

There aren't many games that really catch my imagination or attention tbh, but when they do they can be great fun. Gears of war was fab, apart from that last git that we failed to kill . Also timesplitters 2 was my fave, shooting melons from monkeys head's, what's not to like Grin.

I suppose I sort of grew up with games, old bbc computers at school, then my first "computer" the commodore 64 at about 11, god my whole family loved that computer, flimbos quest haha.

Obviously nothing like the present. However dp and I love the rockband/guitar hero games, so much fun. We swap guitars/vocals etc, really does provide a bond as i would never sing aloud in general (I can't really sing) although I'm ok at the vocal bits strangely.

I think the internet strangely is a bigger killer of actual communication than games. Because it is generally a solo pursuit(irl I mean), at least games can involve the actual people around you.

confuddledDOTcom · 24/03/2011 01:04

coinoperatedgirl, authenticators cost £6 from HMV and stop the hacking. Also his internet security can't be much good if it keeps happening so he should look into what he has on there as he may have a keylogger, maybe try putting his password in a different order so that it can't be logged or C&P it.

For example instead of

"password"

he'd type

"pssw3r" then go back and add the aod and remove the 3. As long as it's done the same way every time it's impossible for a keylogger to work out as it can only pick up keyboard clicks and not mouse clicks.

coinoperatedgirl · 24/03/2011 01:23

Thanks confuddled, I will relay that information to him, he did get many anti virus/keylogger things, but the going back and changing things with the mouse is genius, thankyou.

CheeseandGherkins · 24/03/2011 01:36

Yes get an authenticator, I have one on my phone, so does dh now after he got hacked (he's co-gm and had full guild bank acccess) and they took about 300k, lich king q epics like the mount and music box, all the epics from raids we would sell etc; they even deleted all his items and he's our main tank fully geared. Luckily the gms restored it all as it was a hack so we got the lot back :o I have a couple of chars but main is a disc priest healer, other is a mage and almost have a feral druid levelled :)

confuddledDOTcom · 24/03/2011 01:43

No problem. Our guild has been hit a few times so it gets drilled into us. We've also got guild security measures like limited bank access to people without an authenticator.

If he keeps getting hit he may have something that predates the AV software which is interfering with it detecting things so it could be a hard slog to get it removed (took me nearly a week last year!) Norton do a specific gamers package that it might be worth him looking into.

CheeseandGherkins · 24/03/2011 02:01

Ah we have limited access to non-officers, we have class leaders who have less but we provide the crystals, new feasts, and guild cauldrons (level 20 guild so we get the 25 use ones), but different bank tabs have different levels of access. We have a few ranks based on various things :) How's your guild doing? :)

confuddledDOTcom · 24/03/2011 02:06

I forgot to add that's officers as well. Most of us know each other so it's a pretty open guild, only the new people are really restricted.

I've not played for about a month, kind of coming out of the withdrawals now! My OH is working away so I'm not getting the time to play and when I do I'm too shattered.

Morloth · 24/03/2011 02:21

We both game a lot. Neither of us bother with TV, I MN and play and he watches nerdy crap online and plays on the xbox.

Don't really see the difference between that and watching TV. I am playing a puzzle game right now on the xbox, is excellent.

CheeseandGherkins · 24/03/2011 02:37

Fair enough :) We have a fair few new applicants that aren't known so we have to be careful in that respect, plus some socials that are there for the chat and not raids. Hehe a month! It's nice when you can though, I kind of need something at the moment to take my mind away.

I don't really watch any tv either so it fills my evening time, between that and here! I need something to keep my mind busy so it's perfect. Watch films now and again but that's not the same really plus there's iplayer and equivalent for anything else.

upahill · 24/03/2011 08:00

My mum who is 71 and my dad who is 66 got a wii for Christmas from my brother. They are addicted!!

My mum can beat dad at every game except golf which my dad is rather good at. She is sending to the golfing range so he can play in RL as well.

She loves the obsticale course and when we were there a few weeks ago she insisted on giving my kids a 'demo' - She really wanted extra goes on it and the kids new how to play anyway because we have had one for years!!! Grin

Best tell them to grow up eh!!

babylann · 24/03/2011 10:27

Rift has a good hacker-protection utility that I think WoW could benefit from. It's called "coin lock" and if someone accesses your account from an IP address which is from a different country than yours, your account goes into lockdown almost, in that they can't change your password etc, but they also can't delete any characters or do ANYTHING which relates to currency. So you can't accept or send CODs, use the auction house, or sell your gear or anything. You can easily remove coinlock by getting the code they send to your email, typing it in in-game and immediately it's resolved, but your account was safe the whole time.

Snobear4000 · 24/03/2011 10:48

I think all husbands who do fun things they enjoyed in their youth should be told in no uncertain terms to give it all up, and become a proper provider/role model.

To this end I urge all MNers to remove any game consoles, skateboards, pop music collections, guitars, amplifiers, drums, surfboards, snowboards, paintball gear, mountain bikes and horror movie DVDs from the house.

Your husbands will be thankful that you have removed these unnecessary distractions, and will be happy to be able to spend more time at the office, doing DIY and visiting your parents.

:)

VivaLeBeaver · 24/03/2011 12:14

Ah but the problem is that all the mountain bikes, skate boards, surf boards and games consoles in this house are mine not DH's.

confuddledDOTcom · 24/03/2011 13:13

RoM has an anti keylogging thing that WoW could do with. When you log in there is a keyboard on screen that they recommend you use for some letters. Like with the method I described before though you need to do the same each time or enough logging would make it easy to work out.

I'd love to remove anything my OH should have grown out of! Airsoft, RPG, computer games... he's 45, he should be settled down already and teaching his children to grow up!

nightowlmostly · 24/03/2011 14:32

I am a 30 year old woman and love playing games on my wii, Zelda mostly!

I would otherwise be watching tv or films, so to me it's the same or maybe better, it uses your brain more anyway.

As long as it isn't taking over your life, I don't see the issue, and it's an old stereotype that's it's just for men and boys, women are a huge proportion of the gamers on world of warcraft!

nightowlmostly · 24/03/2011 14:32

YABU

upahill · 24/03/2011 17:08

Oh NO!!Snowbear
Does that mean I have to give up my mouontain bike, snowboard, surf board, music collections (as well as my archery kit, mountaineering kit and caving stuff) or am I excluded because I'm a mum

(Can't bear the thought of giving up my hobbies- sob!! - I'm only 45 and 3/4s

I don't want to grow up yet, I've got gigs to go to and I've just bought two new pairs of converse!!)

weimy · 24/03/2011 18:06

nightowl is zelda a platform game? Is it difficult for a beginner? (I find spiro the dragon a little challenging Blush), but I would like a go .x

weimy · 24/03/2011 18:08

he he upahill I wear converse to work all the time and make sure they don't go with what I'm wearing.

Snobear4000 · 24/03/2011 21:31

Upahill and Beaver...

You ought to send the offending items to the charity shop post haste, as an example, just in case the gent in your life gets any bright ideas about having fun.

VivaLeBeaver · 24/03/2011 21:33

I also have a snowboard, skis, climbing gear and rollerskates. There is probably no hope for me, though I did sell my drum kit a couple of months ago!

DH is only into paragliding and has no interest in anything else.
