...to get narked when people don't read the thread first?

Happens all the time on the more popular threads. Once there's >25 replies people just read the OP, then reply. More often than not they're just repeating the same thing half a dozen people have said before, and it gets stuck in an eternal loop.

Just read what others have put first!

OP posts:
BaroqueAroundTheClock · 22/03/2011 23:38

what's a popular thread? do threads only have to have 25+ message to be popular now.

I suppose we could just have a poll instead of a IABU sections.

Then people could just choose

YABU
YANBU
I'm on the fence
troll Biscuit

I guess that would achieve the same results without the bun fights fun after the OP Wink

PeterAndreForPM · 22/03/2011 23:39

hehe PAFPM - I was going to post that - but then no-one else had posted so it would have looked really stupid Grin

NestaFiesta · 22/03/2011 23:41

YABU.

Not having time to read a 13 page thread does not and should not disqualify you from being able to throw your hat into the ring. How much hardship does it actually cause you to read a few posts that say the same thing?

If there was rule about having to read say, a 10 page thread before you were allowed to comment, a lot of people wouldn't bother with Mumsnet as it would get too time consuming and require mandatory commitment.

Mumsnet is supposed to be a leisure activity, not a comprehension exercise.

PeterAndreForPM · 22/03/2011 23:42

it still would have worked, BATC Smile

tethersend · 22/03/2011 23:42

Try swilling it out with bleach and give it a good shake.

If you can't be bothered to read then don't post.

CointreauVersial · 22/03/2011 23:44

Often I will ignore long threads simply because I can't be arsed to trawl through the whole thing only to find that someone has already given the same reply I would have done about 10 pages earlier.

I waste enough time on here as it is!

blackeyedsusan · 22/03/2011 23:44

too many replies, too late, what was the question?

PhillipeFlop · 22/03/2011 23:44

Stop with all the number names. It's silly.

MardyBra · 22/03/2011 23:57

I usually skim read the thread and usually someone has already said what I would have said. In which case, I don't bother to post. Otherwise it gets into "What soandso said" which is a) dull and b) not particularly ironic (as I've discovered).

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 23/03/2011 00:01

Try controlled crying. It worked for my best friend Kylie. Grin

If a thread is 5+ pages long, I'll always at least read the first page and last two before replying
(though I have been known to spend a whole day reading a long thread, getting to the end after it reaches 1000 posts so I cant post my reply anyway
Angry)

HTH :)

YANBU, especially as IABU as often the OP will have a change of heart/give more information, the discussion moves on and then someone barges in derails the conversation back. It is very annoying.

Frequently the non-readers have just descended upon the thread to give the OP a kicking, something equally as unpleasant as whatever they are attacking the OP for.

NestaFiesta · 23/03/2011 07:54

Goth- a lot of OPs get a kicking anyway whether it's one post or 500.- don't demonise us non readers as the new buggy bullies!

A lot of us only have 5 min slots in which to Mumsnet. That doesn't mean I do not have posting rigths as I don't have 45 minutes ro read long threads. I read the first and last pages, dip in and out a bit and then post. That's all I've got time for and I'm not going to apologise for it!

Yes discussions get derailed, but it's an open forum, nobody is in charge of how it goes.

goodbyemrschips · 23/03/2011 07:57

Blimey I could not read the whole of some threads, I do have a life you know.

I try to get the gist of the thread and then throw in my ideas.

HipHopopotomus · 23/03/2011 09:02

I don't see the problem with 2 people sharing an opinion and replying as such to the OP. The OP is canvassing opinions - if 2, 5 or 10 reply with the same reply each is as valid as the other.

I do have a problem with THREAD POLICE though!!!!!!! (ie do it this way, follow MY rules, nag nag nag! What a bore!!!!)

HipHopopotomus · 23/03/2011 09:03

hear hear cumfy - spot on!
