...to get narked when people don't read the thread first?

Bassett22 · 22/03/2011 23:32

Happens all the time on the more popular threads. Once there's >25 replies people just read the OP, then reply. More often than not they're just repeating the same thing half a dozen people have said before, and it gets stuck in an eternal loop.

Just read what others have put first!

I feel this is Tech's fault for only giving us the last 5 replies in 'Threads I'm on'.

plupedantic · 23/03/2011 10:02

This thread isn't nearly long enough not to read.

More posts needed, so they can be ignored!

Quenelle · 23/03/2011 10:06

So to answer somebody's initial AIBU I have to find time to read 13 pages of comments first? And to start a thread in the first place I have to do an extensive search of the site first to check that nobody has ever asked the same question before?

Sorry if somebody already asked these, I didn't have time to do either of the above.

PureBloodMuggle · 23/03/2011 10:08

Sometimes I just can't be arse reading all the posts on a thread if it's loads of pages. True story.

How about threads that are started over a topic that's already been covered (fairly sure I've read this complaint in another thread about 2 years ago), should everyone read all the threads ever created before posting a new one?

TheMoustachiodPistachio · 23/03/2011 10:10

Agree, and people who start a thread that is similar to others started in the last, um, 12 days should be dragged out and shot.

Abcinthia · 23/03/2011 10:12

If the thread has hundreds of replies, I'll just read the OP's posts (I have them highlighted) and occasionally skim read what others say.

I just don't have time to read hundreds of replies, especially as the replies can sometimes be very long.

MooMooFarm · 23/03/2011 10:14

YABU - sometimes 'popular' threads can end up with 25 pages, not 25 posts. Am I really expected to read all that before being 'allowed' to post my opinion?

And no I haven't read all 31 replies so there.

missorinoco · 23/03/2011 10:16

What new thing where the OP's posts are highlighted?
This forum is moving too fast for me. When I first joined there were only 3 emoticums. Slight exaggeration Grin)

PureBloodMuggle · 23/03/2011 10:16

Naughty MooMooFarm.

I read the twice. Wink

ragged · 23/03/2011 10:18

I only get narked if someone is being attacked by respondents who haven't read their posts properly.

Abcinthia · 23/03/2011 10:19

It's on customise missorinoc

missorinoco · 23/03/2011 10:20

Ah. Thankyou.

redstripeyelephant · 23/03/2011 10:20

how do you highlight all the OP's posts then? That sounds fab. Someone, please??

(and sorry, I know I'm just repeating what missorinoco already said...Wink)

redstripeyelephant · 23/03/2011 10:21

haha and then that happens, you spend so long writing a post someone has already answered Blush

I skim through and read the OPs posts. And maybe glance back at the individual posts they reply to.

Often the OP's subsequent posts can throw a new light on a situation.

Baroque, being able to do a poll is a good idea. On other forums you can vote and have the option of commenting as well. So if people just want to say YANBU, YABU they could vote without adding a comment. Typically, the number of votes out weighs the number of posts.

annabelflowers · 23/03/2011 10:48

I read the first page usually, then the last page to see if there has been a massive bunfight. Then i decide if I want to reply or not.

That said, i get MIGHTY annoyed if I have laid down pearls of wisdom (WISDOM I tell you!) and it is clear that SOME OTHER posters have missed it - due to - ahem- reading just the Op or the last page. Grrr.

[where's a decent double standards emoticon when you need it?]

cumfy · 23/03/2011 11:32

Has no-one cottoned on that MN is just one vast motherfucking goldfish-bowl with Boden adverts ?

Threads come, threads go. Ditto posts.

They're all the same! ALL.:o
Just distorted by the undulating prism of the bowl.

HipHopopotomus · 23/03/2011 16:34

CUMFY once again I'm agreeing with you

I mean we get one of these "why don't people read all the thread" threads a week right?

And all the same replies

Bassett22 · 23/03/2011 16:47

You're all wrong. Except for those of you that are right.

No, I'm not going to tell you who is who - read them back and work it out yourself.

(PS no cumfy it's Fred not Bertie)
