Eating habbits!

My DH never eats his crusts and does not see why our 2 and half year old should either. He says I am being unreasonable to make him - is he right?

The crusts are the best bit!

In our house we used to fight over the crusts (either end of the sliced pan) If your little fella likes them he should eat them. They are delicious!

Your DH is a fusspot!!!

canyou · 22/03/2011 22:03

Sorry but as I am unreasonable about food, I would say you are,
I hate when people insist the others finish everything or finish x amount on their plate etc. But plse feel free to ignore me Grin

PatriciaHolm · 22/03/2011 22:03

I can't see the point in forcing a child to eat, it's self-defeating. DS still doesn't eat crusts at almost 5, I pick my battles to focus on more important things!

usualsuspect · 22/03/2011 22:04

If he doesn't like them why force him to eat them

do you eat things you don't like?

Actually may I contradict myself plse? YANBU if it is fresh crusty loaf but very unreasonable if it is crappy supermarket sliced --pan

canyou · 22/03/2011 22:07

Euphemia you cut off the crusts and freeze to make breadcrumbs no waste no arguements and yummy stuffing

OTheHugeManatee · 22/03/2011 22:07

I read the title of this thread as 'Eating hobbits' and have been sorely disappointed by its actual subject.

squeakytoy · 22/03/2011 22:09

I didnt eat crusts as a kid, and rarely eat them now either. I dont like dry bread with nothing between it.

PrincessScrumpy · 22/03/2011 22:10

dd went through a phase of only eating the crusts - at a picnic I looked really mean giving her the crusts as I ate the sandwich.

I try not to inflict my fussiness onto dd and get really annoyed when MIL makes comments about what dd eats (mostly her love of raw pepper) as MIL is very fussy and only really eats processed food.

If ds doesn't like it then don't push him but I think some people assume kids don't like them. I've had friends cut off the crusts for dd (she is always rather confused by this). I loved them as a child - especially crunchy homemade bread.

I don't eat crusts and wouldn't make my child do so. We make them into breadcrumbs or feed them to the birds so there is no waste.

I was forced by my mum to finish everything on my plate, and I had a tiny appetite so every meal was a terrible ordeal. It's led to me having a bad relationship with food for my entire life.

Please don't make your child eat things he doesn't like. I don't eat mine either, and I don't care what anyone says they DO taste different!!

squeakytoy · 22/03/2011 22:18

There is a difference between leaving crusts, and leaving half the bread.

LaWeasel · 22/03/2011 22:35

I have decided that crusts are another thing to cross off my list of stuff worth worrying about.

Booandpops · 22/03/2011 22:52

I thought I was going to read about nuns ;)

DuelingFanjo · 22/03/2011 22:55

why is it important to you that they eat the crusts?

cantspel · 22/03/2011 22:59

buy bread which already has the crusts cut off.....problem solved

Hatesponge · 22/03/2011 23:00

I was always told as a child that eating my crusts would make my hair curl.

I always ate them.

I have curly hair.

I suspect I may still have had the curly hair regardless Grin

Ryoko · 23/03/2011 01:08

Crusts are great, my 10 month old will eat pretty much anything including crusts on toast (thank god).

unlike his father who will not eat any veg other then potatoes, doesn't eat fruit, or pasta etc,
he eats meat, cheese, bread, tatties and biscuits/crisps/chocolate etc.

Took 2 years to get him to eat rice, which he will only eat with plain white fish mixed in it, anyway I gave up on that shit, he's well old enough to know whats good for him. if he wants to be dead before he hits 50 thats his business, still at least he eats crusts.

I remember not eating the crusts when I was little, even though my mum used to try to tempt me by saying 'they'll put hairs on your chest' Hmm

But it was only a phase, I eat them now, so no harm done. (And I do actually have the odd hair on my chest Blush)

I don't think it's worth making a fuss about.

LaWeasel · 23/03/2011 11:49

Lots of parents don't insist on plate-clearing, incase it encourages over eating (ie learning when to stop when you're full) I don't and DD scoffs food like it's going out of fashion! So you might be on a loser there Euphemia.
