Eating habbits!

My DH never eats his crusts and does not see why our 2 and half year old should either. He says I am being unreasonable to make him - is he right?

DS1 (18) has just started to eat his crusts because the course he is doing involves lots of physical exercise and he gets very hungry!

I thought it would be about cooking rabbits.
DD won't eat her crusts so I cut them off before I put the sarnies into her packed lunch. My life with her is full of other arguements and crusts are the least of my worries.

throckenholt · 23/03/2011 12:18

my great aunt didn't eat crusts as a child - she used to hide them under the table rim until one day her dad was angry about something, thumped the table and they all fell out. It didn't improve his temper.

That must have made a big impression on her because I remember her telling me when she was in her 60s !

My kids sometimes won't eat the crusts but usually when they aren't very hungry anyway. I prefer the crusts (as long as they are nice and crusty). I can't cope with kids who take one of two bites and leave the rest.

Didnt eat crusts myself, I do now. My son pulls the middle out of a french bread stick, he eats that and I eat the outer.
I guess your worry is - will fussiness about crusts lead to general fussiness - maybe, but it you did a straw pole of how many people on mumsnet ate their crusts when told, you would find in favour of the non crust eaters.
No point getting worked up about with your DH let it pass this time, maybe you can use it as a bargaining tool when he decides that DD should do taekwondo instead of ballet in the future......

Thanks for all the replies.
I didn't actually write this message-dh sneaked on last night and write under my name! Shock I know how to spell habits Wink
Also, he neglected to mention that what actually happened is that ds has always happily eaten crusts ( I don't force him to eat food he doesn't like!) - however a few months ago he started noticing that dh doesn't eat crusts, and it's only now that he's started doing it too - to copy dh!

So THAT's why I'd like him to eat them - because there is no reason not to, it is a waste of food (imo) and he is quite happy to - until he sees someone else not doing it.
Euphemia, I agree with you - don't see why it would occur to people (especially children unless they see someone else doing it) not to eat them!

ha ha throckenholt you just reminded me of when I used to store all my uneaten food under the chair (it was the type with a lift up lid that you could store books or tablecloths or something like that in).
One fateful day mum opened it to see what the smell was - she honestly though something had crawled in their and died - a memory I let her stick with until a few years ago when I told her what I used to do!!
We all had our methods, my sister would put food in her napkin and go to the 'loo', my brother fed it to his faithful dog (who for some reason would not take food from us) and I did the sneaky chair maneouvre. Still cant eat stew or anything hot pot related!

Cat98 · 23/03/2011 12:35

Euphemia - I completely disagree with you about making children finish their food or it is "overindulgence".
What if someone else dishes you up a meal, and then insists you clear your plate? How is that fair? It's the same for children - I don't see why they should be told they have to eat all of a portion decided for them by someone else!

GwendolineMaryLacey · 23/03/2011 12:36

Crusts are funny, DD (3.2) has always eaten them with no comment, now suddenly she doesn't. I suspect it's come from other children at nursery. And we both love our butter so they're never dry. No other explanation for it.

WTF is wrong with crusts?! I've NEVER understood that. I do though agree that at this stage you've probably got bigger battles to fight. But adults who don't eat the crusts just need to grow up, quite honestly.
