to be a bit pissed off with a 2:2? Make me feel better. What degree did you get?

My small dissertation disaster pulled my overall marks back so much I missed out on a 2:1.

I am unreasonably pissed off. I got a 2:1 with my last degree and wanted the same, if not better, this time.

humph.

make me feel better please?

I got a 2.1. The class of degree matters if you want to do a further degree. I got a good scholarship for my PhD as I got the 2.1 and a High Distinction for my Master in ICT.

But at the end of it,you got a good degree.

Nowt wrong with a Desmond I say.

hmc · 21/03/2011 23:00

I am sure that all these 'I got a first / 2:1 but it didn't matter in the end' are making the OP feel much better Wink

Well I got a first and have two masters with distinction.

I spend my days entertaining a 3yr old and eating gingerbread. Not entirely sure I needed the degrees tbh. Grin

mamatomany · 21/03/2011 23:07

2.1 for me, DH got a 2.2 and was heading for a first until he caught GF, gutted :(

Jude89 · 21/03/2011 23:15

Hopefully I will get a Third, but I'd need to get off MN and write my final essay...

LaWeasel · 21/03/2011 23:28

I got a 2.1 but have never earnt more than the £15kpa to pay my loans back (so that was really worth it) DH got a 2.2 (He's nice to not blame me getting up the duff and DD - but I think he knows that he also just didn't work hard enough.) And has got a job with decent pay!!

It's hard not to be bitter sometimes. Grin

TurkeyBurgerThing · 21/03/2011 23:37

I got a 2:2. It was a science based degree I did, with a hefty amount of completely unrelevent stuff in it to pad it out (new degree to the uni at the time!)

I am about as scientific as an art student (which is what I SHOULD have done....) I also had a bloody great time, and also am actually rather thick if we're being honest. I see no issues with my 2:2! I'm sure if I'd have wanted a first I'd have been disappointed, but really it's still a second!

cory · 22/03/2011 09:22

Am expecting to have to spend the best part of this week pointing out to students that a 2:2 is not actually, you know, some kind of failure. In fact, it's a bloody long way off the pass mark! And I would have had no qualms about failing you had you so deserved. The fact that I did not do so does actually mean something. And repeat- ad infinitum.

OP, you got a 2:2, despite all the other things you have to juggle in your life- you should be proud! Congratulations!

thumbwitch · 22/03/2011 09:25

same as buttonmooncup here. If I'd done better in my second year exams, I'd have been viva'd up to a 2:1 but my 2nd year exams were bang in the middle 2:2. I suffered from spectacular problems in my biochemistry exams.Blush

BakeliteBelle · 22/03/2011 09:30

2:2 back in 1983. I did jack shit and I was lucky not to be thrown out.

Of no relevence to my life now - a complete waste of time. I am much more proud of my hard-earned vocational qualifications.

ursusnix · 22/03/2011 09:57

I have 2 vin-ordinaires - yup I was a complete uni wastrel.

Matters? only in pride - and knowing that I can do better.

Ephiny · 22/03/2011 10:07

I got a 2:2 in my first degree, it was borderline between that and a third, and only managed it after several exam retakes and a repeated year. Lots of difficulties adapting to independent/university life and it took me two years to realise I actually had to study rather than just 'coasting' my way to A grades as I had at school/college. I was a disgrace really and ashamed now of all the time and money I wasted.

Did another degree later that I actually wanted to do as a self-funding mature student and got a good First, am on track for a distinction in my Masters and have funding for a PhD.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it doesn't reflect necessarily on your ability and intelligence, more on your life circumstances at the time. I don't know what your dissertation disaster was but it sounds like you had lots going on at the time.

Ephiny · 22/03/2011 10:10

I'm not saying a 2:2 is a bad thing or anything to be ashamed btw, it's a perfectly respectable result. But it can be frustrating when you know you could have done better if things had been different.

mayorquimby · 22/03/2011 10:31

2.2 in my undergrad because I was a mess of a student.
Like a really bad stereotype of exactly what people who moan about "stewdants" and "the university of life" would expect from a private school pupil studying Arts would be.
Mad me get my act together though, 2.1 in my post-grad on course for the same again now in my professional exams.

mayorquimby · 22/03/2011 10:33

oh and my 2.2 was right on the 2.2 money.
honestly 50.00% in both my subjects. Obviously one of my lecturers did me a favour.

Prunnhilda · 22/03/2011 10:54

I've got a 2:2 - basically I got through school and first/second year uni on my excellent memory, and then when it got a bit harder I found I had no study skills whatsoever Confused or self-discipline.

However it didn't stop me in my training and in fact I passed my professional qualifications with flying colours and directly used a good amount of what was in my degree and I feel fine about all that.

I am also not really wildly bright Grin I know my level (even though dh, very academic, is kind enough to say nice things about my intellect).

fedupofnamechanging · 22/03/2011 12:33

I got a 2:2. I blame DH, cos I spent every weekend with him, instead of studying. He got a 2:1 though Angry. I have put his degree to good use and have sent him out to work, while I stay home and MN.

Who's the smart one Grin

nickelbabysnatcher · 22/03/2011 12:35

I got a 3rd.

it wasn't my best moment, but then, I'm crap at exams, and polymers was really really really hard.

nickelbabysnatcher · 22/03/2011 12:37

ooh, just saw the subject of your degree

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 22/03/2011 12:39

I got a first for the BA and a distinction for the MA.

Don't worry though - I'm poor and a bit thick.

Rowgtfc72 · 22/03/2011 14:34

I got a 2:2 in english lit and education studies in 1994. Way too much partying!Im practically illiterate now since having dd four years ago (I blame baby brain )and spend my worklife counting plastic into piles of twenties! Does anyone ever use BA (Hons) after their name ? I did once, writing home to my parents when I got my exam results !Smile

humanfraggle · 22/03/2011 14:40

I don't, I was kicked off my course left my degree after 2 years.

Didn't like it anyway Grin

I think I have a 'certificate of higher education' for completing my first year. Yeah, yeah, whatever Hmm

madonnawhore · 22/03/2011 14:44

I got a Desmond and it's made no difference to anything. I did a second degree too and did a bit better that time, but ultimately, once you reach a certain stage in your life/career, degrees and exam results mean fuck all.

(Unless you're a doctor).

JemimaMop · 22/03/2011 14:48

I got a 2:1. I was delighted. But nobody has ever actually asked what I got so I might as well have spent more time in the union bar and got a 3rd Grin
