to start another thread to rave about Aldi?

I know there was a thread like this a couple of weeks ago but blimey I was impressed yesterday.

I usually shop in Sainsburys, for 3 of us is about £90- £100 (excluding weekends food, because we always eat out, but includes stuff for lunch in the week).

Bought the same variety of stuff in Aldi yesterday, cost £50.

DD curled her lip at the own brand stuff, but DP was delighted, as bought a load of German stuff (which he loves as he lived in Germany for years).

Can't believe how cheap it was, and took so little time as the shop is about one tenth the size of Sainsburys.

It was great - I had never been there before and I was very pleased indeed.

YANBU

wish we had one near us

Ambi · 21/03/2011 14:06

I love it, I'll never shop at Asda or Tescos again. I've had to atop raving though as it's getting busier!!

AuntiePickleBottom · 21/03/2011 14:09

i went shopping there on friday, saved me loads as i only bought what i needed.....so no falling for the BOGOF other offers

foundwanting · 21/03/2011 14:10

It is great, isn't it?

And I agree that you can zip round in super-fast time. It had been taking me an hour to get round the big Tesco.

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 21/03/2011 14:19

I really like Aldi. Might try Lidl this week, as popped in for chicken breasts yesterday (on offer at £1.99 for 3 instead of £3.99, bargain hunters!) and it's a lovely, light, airy brand new store. I can then compare my receipt prices to the Aldi receipts I have and make a decision as to which is cheapest.

But yes, Aldi/Lidl are the way forward. I now scoff at people buying overpriced food, in a reverse-snobbery kind of way. Grin

notwavingjustironing · 21/03/2011 14:22

that's spooky Getorf - I was just wondering how you were feeling - I haven't been on for ages and the last time I took the piss out of your hospital trip. So to pay back with some good manners for a change...

a)Aldi is flipping marvellous in my opinion
b)Hope you're feeling much better.

nikki1978 · 21/03/2011 14:26

Hmmm... I have popped in a few times and grabbed some nice stuff. Still feel like there isn't enough there to do a full weekly shop though. I really should try it out soon as knocking down the food budget by that much would be great!

reikizen · 21/03/2011 14:27

D'you know, I went there today for the first time and I don't think it was any cheaper than Asda. Well, it was because they don't have any nice bits & bobs to buy but having said that they didn't have everything I needed so I'll have to go elsewhere anyway. But my god, it was depressing. It felt like I'd woken up as a heroin addict. And that's why you get round so quick, because you can feel your life being sucked out of you in each aisle Wink

MaresyTotes · 21/03/2011 14:27

I don't think I could do a whole weeks worth of shopping in there TBH. I have noticed that a lot of their things have salt where it's not really needed - cream cheese and tuna in oil being just two of them (trying to avoid salt at the mo). Their biscuits are fab though and they're great for some deli type things and eggs.

HipHopopotomus · 21/03/2011 14:47

We don't have an Aldi anywhere near us though I just discovered MIL has a Lidl 2 min round the corner. Last time we were there I did a quick shop/nosey there and was surprisingly impressed. Will plan more shops to coincide with visiting her & look out for Aldi's that may be near to friends homes :)

GetOrfMoiLand · 21/03/2011 14:57

Notwaving - thanks, I am fine now, only just feeling myself though, as I contracted MRSA and had vipe weeping stitches and was quite ill for a bit. But lost a stone, so every cloud. Grin

I am lucky as my local Aldi is great, it is a new store. I have heard that some of the older stores are a bit grim. I don't really like Lidl however, that is grim in there.

I managed to buy a lot of the same stuff as I would buy in Sainsburys, and yes it is great not to get seduced by the special offers and tantalising stuff they have in sainsburys. They don't sell herbs and spices mind you, so will have to get them from elseweher, and don't seem to sell anchovies or capers, however I am sure I can live without that.

Their detergent stuff is so much cheaper as well. Plus cat food (as long as the cats don't turn their noses up).

their new free range chicken is really nice. (don;t how free range it genuinely is though - is there a way of checking?)

Kewcumber · 21/03/2011 15:03

Shop there once a month - thats plenty

TragicallyHip · 21/03/2011 15:10

I've just started shopping there and it's not too bad. Couldn't do a full shop and there are a couple of things I have tried which I won't buy again.

The Clementine's were dry, crackers are way too salty and the brie tastes of nothing but I've been happy with everything else.

Someone's dh on another thread packs chicken and said it's the same chicken that sells in Tesco's and the other supermarkets Kewcumber

Same with their weetabix

EricNorthmansMistress · 21/03/2011 15:12

YANBU, I

valiumredhead · 21/03/2011 15:12

Poo. I live in Northern Ireland. We have no Aldi. Only Lidl and it is GRIM.

scattermummy · 21/03/2011 20:32

I have it down to a T. aldi for cereal ,jam, honey, brioches, water, fruit pots, cooked meat, yogurts and meat crap, don't bother, then off to sainsburys for all milk, offer stuff, rice cakes ect, then off to marksies for fish and meat.it does take a couple of hours in a car, but with 4 dcs last one finally at school.going on my own is quite nice!

HuckingFell · 21/03/2011 20:35

Aldi's brie with chilli

NorthernGobshite · 21/03/2011 20:38

I heart Aldi!

bellastella · 21/03/2011 20:43

Bought my 4 shelf mini greenhouse there last week and very happy with that! also the loo roll, their aloe vera 'expensive' one, is scented and smells of freesias which i find gorgeous and perfumes our whole bathroom!

purpleknittingmum · 21/03/2011 20:44

Another Aldi convert! Only started going when we moved at the end of Sept and my mum showed us where it it, lirerally 5 min walk away, take a short cut throught the Co Op!!

Get probably 80-90% of our shopping there now. Cat doesn't like the cat food and a chicken pie was revolting. I get some fruit there, but sometimes the apples are really tiny and they don't do loose peppers so I go elsewhere for those

springydaffs · 21/03/2011 20:48

I heart Aldi and Lidl too

but SSSH you don't want them thinking their prices are so good that they'll put them up Shock

A word of warning: the fruit and veg is, generally, crap and often old. Buy the veg for that day only - that's my experience anyway.

As for the amazing stuff in the centre aisles (non-food) for stupid prices that you never realised you needed - fab! I wanted to get a sewing machine for dd last christmas and saw one in Lidl for about £60, went home to check with ds that we should get it (we were doing it together), went back - all gone, every single one Sad. Had to get one in John Lewis for £100 in the end. In my experience the stuff in the centre aisles is usually very good quality. Saw some gorgeous gardening clogs for £3.99 today (heart)

itisnotgoingwelltoday · 21/03/2011 21:43

not listening to you all with your Aldi love-in

Bah humbug
