to start another thread to rave about Aldi?

I know there was a thread like this a couple of weeks ago but blimey I was impressed yesterday.

I usually shop in Sainsburys, for 3 of us is about £90- £100 (excluding weekends food, because we always eat out, but includes stuff for lunch in the week).

Bought the same variety of stuff in Aldi yesterday, cost £50.

DD curled her lip at the own brand stuff, but DP was delighted, as bought a load of German stuff (which he loves as he lived in Germany for years).

Can't believe how cheap it was, and took so little time as the shop is about one tenth the size of Sainsburys.

It was great - I had never been there before and I was very pleased indeed.

I've been an Aldi convert for a while now - I love it!

The only thing I buy from elsewhere are herbs/spices the cat food (he's a fussy devil) and tinned soup (DP is a fusspot about that, too).

I've gone from spending £120 a week for the five of us in Tesco to £80 maximum a week in Aldi, which includes packed lunch items for the three DCs.

We don't have any waste either any more - the dates on the fresh meat are very good. Their free range chickens at £4.99 are both huge and tasty!

Oh and £1.99 for 30 metres of kitchen foil is not to be sniffed at!

Wandaaa · 21/03/2011 22:04

I like cravendale milk and not keen on their washing powder or tomato ketchup, but other than those I get most of my weekly shop from Aldi, their washing up liquid is fab and I was a loyal Fairy buyer and DD lives on their small cartons of apple juice-99p for 6 200ml cartons-99p for 3 150ml in Asda. The only problem is, that their biscuits are so cheap we buy far more than we ever did when we shopped at Asda.

FlyingFig · 21/03/2011 22:11

Me and DP still titter at the Disco Biscuits, week in, week out
Grin

FlyingFig · 21/03/2011 22:13

Grapes are about £1.60 per punnet and are always nice. The apples can be crap but this week they had some Pink Ladies and they were delicious Smile

DrSocks · 21/03/2011 22:14

Yesssss - Bella that toilet roll is brilliant! Whole bathroom smells fab. I've actually gradually phased out tesco over the last 3 months, and can't say I really miss anything. Probably easier for me as no DC to please, but I can't think of ANYTHING that I can complain about the quality of from Aldi. Weeks shopping for me and DP, including lunches and a bottle of wine most weeks for £30. Whats not like? My mum who has been an aldi fan for years has actually stopped going there now as she claims it has gotten too popular Hmm and thus has often run out of the good stuff!

TragicallyHip · 21/03/2011 22:19

Saw the disco biscuits on Saturday, had to buy them in hope we would get the same effect as the disco biscuits I used to know Wink

follyfoot · 21/03/2011 22:20

Last time I went to Aldi there was a bit of a scene going off and the police had to arrest someone so was a bit Hmm about going again although we've moved. Flippin brilliant though. Sliced cooked chicken, basmati rice, cheese, pasta, sweets for the car, cottage cheese, bread, mini romano peppers (they are divine), apples, onions, pineapples, grapes, I could go on and on.

Yoghurts were nasty (tasted of cheese according to DD)but that was really the only definite yuck. What is the washing liquid like, have bought some but not using it yet?

FlyingFig · 21/03/2011 22:22

We tried the Disco Biscuits with the same hope, too!

Along with the Caramel Wackos Grin

FlyingFig · 21/03/2011 22:24

Washing liquid (if you mean washing) is great - doesn't set the DC's sensitive skin off but good enough to get the stains out. The fabric softener is good, too.

I'm going to shut up now as I'm in danger of sounding like I'm sponsored by Aldi!

springydaffs · 21/03/2011 22:26

small cartons of apple juice

ah, apfelsaft! That's a word that's firmly embedded in the family lexicon, never forgotten.

fig rolls - 39p. ds is a total fan

What's wrong with the gorgeous gardening clogs? You laughing at my taste?

Kewcumber · 21/03/2011 22:28

tragicallyhip but is it the same free range one as the other supermarket. I know its british which the other chicken in ALdi isn;t but what does "free range" have to mean exaclty?

Their cloudy apple juice is delicious but sadly went up from 75p to 99p recently.

Wandaaa nooooo - I love their ketchup - prefer it to Heinz

FlyingFig - have him try th eoxtail soup its delicious and very reasonable calories too.

I am lucky the fruit and veg at our local is pretty good so I nearly always buy at least some there.

Kewcumber · 21/03/2011 22:29

is their aloe vera loo roll cheaper than elsewhere I need some and thinking of going tomorrow - am daydreaming about pleasantly scented toilets...

mamasmissionimpossible · 21/03/2011 22:34

I love aldi and go at least once a week, as we have one about 10 mins walk away. Must have saved alot of money over the years.

I tried their oxtail soup last week, after a recommendation on here. Twas vile

BoffinMum · 21/03/2011 22:37

All the Italian food is fantastic.

TragicallyHip · 21/03/2011 22:40

From what I remember she said he packs chicken for different stores and they all come from the same free range source which is why she knows it's ok to buy Chicken there.

Not entirely sure what classes as free range tho. I think they get more sunlight, have a certain amount of room each and would live a bit longer than battery hens.

purpleknittingmum · 21/03/2011 22:47

We recently tried their Wagan Wheels called Broncos or something and the Penguins are Seal bars, they are fine

No problems with the crisps and cheddar type snacks

Ours does a selection of dried herbs

2litre bottles of coke for 39p!!

UntitledNo2 · 22/03/2011 00:04

Ah, FlyingFig, was in Aldi last week with my Mum and Sister, sister and I fell about laughing at the 'Disco Biscuits' whilst my poor Mum looked on in bafflement Grin

The OJ is very good too, I only drink not from concentrate OJ, and theirs is much cheaper than most, but yummy. Breakfast cereals, jam, honey, Parma Ham and Parmesan all very good in my local Aldi. Vegetables can be good, depending on what you get there - my local one stocks fairly local Irish potatoes, carrots, turnips, mushrooms, etc, which are always lovely.

Biscuits are good too - DP loves biccies, so we always pick up lots of cheap 'uns.

Can't do milk, cheese (except Parmesan) or meat from Aldi - mostly as I am rather am fussy about those. It defo saves us a fortune on other shopping though.

Lidl fan here. The jam is lovely. My cats actually prefer their dried food over Iams and Hills Science Diet. For some reason went to Tesco for first time in ages for a weekly shop and was shocked at how expensive it was ( nearly twice as much for a similar shop ).

The thing I do hate, though, is the checkout where you have to very quickly put everything back into the trolley at the check out then decant into bags afterwards. I suppose that's one way they save money though.

AitchTech · 22/03/2011 00:42

lidl veg better than aldo imho. wouldn't buy raw meat there, but get evelything from them apart from butcher meat tbh. i genuinely love it.

went to mahoosive tesco the other day by mistake. managed to stagger out with totally over-stimulated kids, an empty purse and still nothing for dinner.

so while the decor is a tad soviet in lidl, it does at least focus the kids on the job in hand for the most part.

LDNmummy · 22/03/2011 00:53

I love Aldi, do not know anywhere else I can get actual quality products at such a good price.

The things are either name brands re-packaged or sourced products from abroad.

Wish there were bigger and more Aldi stores around.
