To think the word 'frape' is just awful

First off, apologies if everyone already knows this word, I'm a bit of a latecomer to facebook.

I saw the status update of some random after a mutual friend had commented on it. Won't go into what the update said as that's a whole thread a in itself Hmm but the poster came back to comment on his update a few minutes later saying he had been 'fraped', ie that someone had written a joke update when he'd left his account logged in.

AIBU to think this is an awful word and to wonder why the hell anyone in their right mind would use it?

Unfortunately "rape" has become a trivial word with a similar meaning to "pwn" (which approximately means "defeat") on the internet. My wife is a guild leader on World of Warcraft and once had an argument with someone that couldn't accept that they wouldn't be able to use the word "rape" in a trivial sense in guildchat. He left the guild because of the argument, which was fine with us.

YANBU, I have always disliked it, it makes me cringe.

Very much trivializes rape by making it comedic.

It's just a word. It does not 'trivialise rape'. It's a word, describing an action. I think it's quite useful and appropriate for the situation.

I can see why people don't like it. Personally, the word 'snack' really sets my teeth on edge.

TurkeyBurgerThing · 21/03/2011 13:10

Oh. I thought this was going to be about something you buy in Starbucks....

I don't understand why it can't be called Facejacking. Surely the act is more akin to hijacking than rape?

i totally agree with you OP, and i'm not generally easily offended, especially by things which aren't meant to be offensive, as this term clearly isn't. but i really dislike it and it makes me feel very uncomfortable when i see it.

Agree no such thing as "just words". Words are how we create the world.

I can see the point of posters who say I need to get a life, though, I have been on here far too much recently :o

YANBU. I feel the same way about this that I do about the "birth rape" debate.

It worries me that so many feel it's ok to trivialise a word that has such huge connotations.

I'd never even heard of the phrase birth rape until this thread. It's not nice, but it must refer to pretty traumatic experience. Maybe as a way of trying to communicate to those who haven't given birth? Butm there's hyperbole and then there's, well, nonsense.

"I think it's an offensive term used by people too thick to think for themselves."

I don't understand your reasoning, SGM.

I thought it was cold coffee, or is that frape with an accent above somewhere.

Never heard frape used any other way.
