To think DS is a genius!

DS is 22 months old. He just counted to 5 without any help/encouragement.
I think that's really smart for his age
DH thinks that's perfectly normal age to be counting

Do I contact Mensa Grin

possibly unless he actually grasps the concept of numbers and counting Grin just saying words means he's good at repeating things !

Mensa means piff all anyway Grin

BornThisWayBaby · 18/03/2011 20:05

Depends?
Did he count 5 things or did he count to 5?

Na. My ds 26months, can count to 21, sing Little mermaid word perfect, and produces 10 word sentences. Your lad sounds like he needs to catch up.

Grin but Im not lying Wink

twinkytonk · 18/03/2011 20:07

Can he do it backwards too?

MrsJamin · 18/03/2011 20:08

I do hope you're kidding about the genius bit. Saying 1,2,3,4,5 is very different to actually counting items and understanding that the last number that you say summarises the number of the group.

rachelmummy · 18/03/2011 20:09

My DD is just 2 and can count to 20, say the alphabet and sing most nursery rhymes word perfect. She is just doing it by rote, tho. I'm not planning to contact Mensa until she is showing some sort of logic.

My DS (same age) is amazingly logical. Can do 50 piece jigsaw puzzles, yet does not speak..

Go figure...

EdwardorEricCantdecide · 18/03/2011 20:10

He was putting coins into his bank and counted in context (he only counts cash though) won't count the stairs as he walks up or toys in box etc even with encouragement Confused

I was so proud but now thinking he's a money grabber lol

hahaha you have a future Mr Burns on your hands - have this Wine

iheartdusty · 18/03/2011 20:15

you certainly should be proud Smile

but maybe hold off on the call to mensa just yet awhile.

Pumpster · 18/03/2011 20:17

My dd is the same age and can do this and knows all her colours. I think she's bright but no genius!!
So yes, yabu Grin

FlaminGreatGallah · 18/03/2011 20:19

My DS was a whizz with numbers (still is) well before he was verbal. But he is high-functioning autistic Sad

PMSL at the cash. Forget Mensa for now and sign him up to the Young Conservatives.

EdwardorEricCantdecide · 18/03/2011 20:24

DS knows primary colours + green silver and black (he likes cars) and again will only say colours if it's a car ball or Lego.

I was obviously kidding about Mensa, can't decide if I'd disown him for being a politician or love him for trying to change politics (based on money counting tho I'd say the former lol)

I once worked with someone who was very proud that his DD could say the Hail Mary backwards. And the benefit of that was ......? Confused

AnswersInHaiku · 18/03/2011 20:41

I can count to five
It helps when writing haikus
Five-seven-five, yeah?

EdwardorEricCantdecide · 18/03/2011 20:42

PMSL at hail Mary backwards I'm now picturing little girl doing this in church and priest response Grin

It's very normal for his age but still yanbu to be proud, whenever they learn something new or achieve something its always lovely, cos you see how much progress they have made. whether its ahead or behind of others does not really matter cos its still new for them

EdwardorEricCantdecide · 18/03/2011 20:54

I agree firawla, did want to burst with pride. Am still PFB though
Was bit gutted that DH wasn't that bothered though.

DD can recite numbers 1 to 10 and can definitely count to 6, when I asked her how many chairs were in a picture she counted them! She's just turned 17 months.

Is this going to turn into parents Top Trumps? Wink Grin

AllSheepareWhite · 18/03/2011 21:05

I would say it is normal, DD (21 months) counts stairs up to 13 and blocks up to 10, knows her colours and at least 10 2D shapes (even when rotated or as part of a picture) [proud mother emoticon]. Just enjoy it, most of the time development all evens out as they get older. It is a good thing he is keen on money, by the time we reach old age our children will need to be as our pensions will be worth diddly squat!

EdwardorEricCantdecide · 18/03/2011 21:18

I worry more about how he'll fare in future houses will be a fortune as will cars food fuel etc. Our kids won't know what retirement means Sad

He's a genius! Screw these miseries! Grin Mine is a genius too. I don't care what MN says!

mumbar · 18/03/2011 21:35

I would say very clever - but my DS said only about 10 words at this age (6 of those were in Spanish though!!)

He is way above average in Maths now though at 6yo - go figure Hmm. I guess its all relative in the end.

YADNBU to be proud. Grin
