First of all, my name is not Amanda Fauntleroy-Money-Coutts. Not that it should make a difference, but...

While dialling up my details she read my full name out in a loud voice, looked at me with narrowed eyes and said 'that's a really posh name', said my name again to herself in thoughtful tones that made me think she was picturing me first up against the wall come the revolution, and said 'it's really posh... you must be rich' [WTF?]

Felt like telling her to fuck right off, - WIHBU to do so?

no, go ahead
look down your nose at her and say in a very withering voice "I don't think it is your place to make idiotic comments about my name, do you?"

that'll show her

then tell the practice manager. what does she say to other people? "Hmm, Jablovski. You must be an immigrant who has come here to nick our jobs"

silly woman (her not you)

MerryMarigold · 18/03/2011 13:56

Yes YABU. Why are you offended to have been 'judged' as rich. It's hardly the crime of the century. She wasn't being derogatory even if she was making (perhaps unfair, I don't know) assumptions. I'm sure she didn't mean to offend. I wouldn't find it offensive if someone said that to me (not that they would). Now go and remove one of the barrels from your name and you can sound a lot poorer Wink!

ps I know several money-coutts's. they must get that a LOT!

manfromCUK · 18/03/2011 13:56

YANBU no contest

NoWayNoHow · 18/03/2011 13:56

I would've asked for her name, then said "Nosey-Trollop? That's a thick-sounding name."

freshmint · 18/03/2011 13:57

merrymarigold you are silly too.
are you a practice receptionist?

exexpat · 18/03/2011 13:57

YWNHBU (is that right?).

I don't think there is any system where being called Ponsonby-Ffortescue-Hetherington-Smythe or whatever guarantees you an income over £100k or a stately home. I have a good friend with a name along those lines and she is not posh and not rich.

Or is there some law which says that if you have a posh name but the family money has run out, you have to change your name to Smith? Must have missed that one...

PepsiPopcorn · 18/03/2011 13:57

YANBU. Ask her if she always makes open guesses about patients' financial status. Or say "how about you, are you rich?"

ashamedandconfused · 18/03/2011 13:57

nothing to say just Shock x100

MerryMarigold · 18/03/2011 13:58

freshmint, the polish example is derogatory. Calling someone rich or posh (imo) is not, unless she meant it in derogatory manner, which doesn't sound like she did.

MerryMarigold · 18/03/2011 13:59

Nope, I am a lady who lunches, not a receptionist.

But I just don't see the problem here.

chandellina · 18/03/2011 13:59

i think i'd just laugh and say - i wish. people say stupid things.

happystory · 18/03/2011 13:59

So rude.Be ready with a pithy reply next time

She was just trying to be friendly in a Dr's receptionist type way. Try not too look too badly on her, they have a unique sense of humour, they're a special breed of Receptionist! :)

PepsiPopcorn · 18/03/2011 14:01

It's rude to make personal remarks about people's names though, and to make assumptions about someone's wealth, isn't it MerryMarigold?

MerryMarigold · 18/03/2011 14:02

Why is OP's example rude? If someone said to me, "Oooh you're name sounds very arty. You must be a dress designer!" I'd say, "Sadly I'm not, but I would have loved to be". And I wouldn't give a sausage about it.

Ciske · 18/03/2011 14:02

Laugh at the comment of being rich, say 'if only!' and move on. I have a really difficult name, people always make jokes or comments, and that's fine. They're just making conversation. /shrug.

It's not worth getting upset about.

PepsiPopcorn · 18/03/2011 14:02

Since when was commenting on someone else's possible financial situation polite? Especially if you don't even know them.

FourFortyFour · 18/03/2011 14:02

It is a bit like the window man when I said I didn't want to buy new windows or save £2000, he said you must be rich then and walked off.Hmm.

I am not rich but wouldn't sign up for anything at the door.

RevoltingPeasant · 18/03/2011 14:03

YANBU; she is obviously a grasping, vulgar nouveau-riche.

Just murmur 'doors to manual' under your breath....

freshmint · 18/03/2011 14:03

you don't think questioning someone about their financial status is rude merrymarigold?

funny, that. so how much do you earn not being a practice receptionist, then?

RevoltingPeasant · 18/03/2011 14:04

FourForty

The correct response to that is, 'Yes, and intelligent.'

freshmint · 18/03/2011 14:04

oh I see you live off a bloke. or the state. which?
