to not have the Dr's receptionist make judgey comments about my surname?

First of all, my name is not Amanda Fauntleroy-Money-Coutts. Not that it should make a difference, but...

While dialling up my details she read my full name out in a loud voice, looked at me with narrowed eyes and said 'that's a really posh name', said my name again to herself in thoughtful tones that made me think she was picturing me first up against the wall come the revolution, and said 'it's really posh... you must be rich' [WTF?]

Felt like telling her to fuck right off, - WIHBU to do so?

A patients name, their personal circumstances, their medical history, financial situation, it's all the same to me MM.

What else does she think is fair game to pass judgement on?

Does she think it's also OK to have a laugh with other staff at the surgery when she relays the OPs name?

The fact of the matter is that she didn't know it was inappropriate.

MerryMarigold · 18/03/2011 14:29

Why thankyou. Yes, I am still recovering from the bump 2 years on!

NotJustKangaskhan · 18/03/2011 14:29

I got a similar comment from a nurse after the birth of my third - she asked their names, and then replied "Why, aren't you the family of posh names?" before walking away. Some people just think outloud, leaving trails of confused people behind them. It's not right of them to do it, but in some cases it's better to let it pass and hope they feel silly later.

MaisyMooCow · 18/03/2011 14:29

I'm a Receptionist, now I know my place!

MerryMarigold · 18/03/2011 14:32

I do agree with not appropriate.

But the OP referred to the receptionist 'judgey comments' and was asking if it WBU to tell her to 'fuck off' for them. So I was saying OP would be unreasonable to be rude, because I don't think the intention was rude or 'judgey', just a bit inappropriate, true - and no, revealing medical history is not the same as a surname.

freshmint · 18/03/2011 14:33

ok maisy what do you think?
would you comment on a patient's name like that? do you think it is OK or not?

freshmint · 18/03/2011 14:33

well I agree she shouldn't say fuck off that's just offensive

but I wouldn't ignore it either

freshmint · 18/03/2011 14:34

CaptainNancy · 18/03/2011 14:37

Oi Freshmint- fuck off and gove something back to the community Wink

Yellowstone · 18/03/2011 14:37

MerryMarigold is talking a lot of sense. What snobbishness elsewhere on the thread! Get over it OP, such a little thing. Sounds to me as if you really rather like your rather posh name....

FellatioNelson · 18/03/2011 14:37

Shock How bloody rude! Not too mention weird. I'd complain and get her ass sacked. Grin

CaptainNancy · 18/03/2011 14:38

That would have been funnier if I could type give...

MaisyMooCow · 18/03/2011 14:41

I admit I have commented on someone's name but only to the point where I have said 'that's a lovely name'. Last week a 'Mr Beckham' came in and I jokingly asked if he was related. I suppose it's just trying to get a rapport with the clients/visitors. I think you know where to draw the line though.

Yellowstone · 18/03/2011 14:41

Btw Lovecat is it your name or your husband's?

AgentZigzag · 18/03/2011 14:43

'Blimey, you guys really like people like mere receptionists to KNOW THEIR PLACE, don't ya?'

Saying it like that makes it sound as though it's a class thing.

But apart from the way you've phrased it, yes, I do expect certain things from the staff at my surgery.

It's a different job from others, and therefore has different expectations.

This receptionist overstepped the line.

Yellowstone · 18/03/2011 14:50

The receptionist clearly meant no harm and no doubt said what she said because she's not that bright/ wanted to be friendly in which case the right and well mannered thing to do is let it go.

PepsiPopcorn · 18/03/2011 15:05

I don't think I am "better than" a receptionist and it's not about "knowing one's place". It's to do with courtesy and professionalism. If someone is unprofessional and rude then I will complain regardless of the other person's social status or "place".

Lovecat · 18/03/2011 15:58

It's DH's name - well, the surname at any rate - and as Fellatio knows me in RL I'll leave it to her to let you know if it's a posh name or not - I was actually genuinely puzzled because it really, really isn't what I'd call posh at all... mind you, I do live on the East London/Essex border and perhaps it appears 'posh' amongst the Chantelles and Duwaynes...:o

I didn't tell her to fuck the fuck off, btw, I was just mildly astonished that my very ordinary name (most popular girl's name of 1966, apparently) is considered posh and rich!

Ta for the responses, was feeling miserable about the issue I was I'm the Dr's for, now I'm laughing at the idea of Mrs Marjorie Hussy...:)

Wow, we live in the same area Lovecat! You probably know me...

FellatioNelson · 18/03/2011 17:15

I must admit Lovecat I was starting to wonder whether you had some secret double-barrel thing going on that I was unaware of, beacuse your name has always struck me as lovely but perfectly run of the mill! Confused

InPraiseOfBacchus · 18/03/2011 18:16

YABU, it was just a little joke! You clearly take yourself too seriously. Typical posh bird :D

carabos · 18/03/2011 19:18

Doctors receptionist commented on noticing my date of birth (and reading it aloud)that that had been her wedding day and looking at me she couldn't believe I was that old. Granted it was a bit of a backhanded compliment but even so it was very cheeky. I shot her down by remarking that i was surprised she wasn't retired as she must be well over the age of 65.
