Me and DH were very stupid last night and forgot to lock the bag door (although in our defense the baby was in a state with chicken pocks and crying for hours on end).

This morning about 5am I heard some weird noises in our hallway but in my half sleep I thought it was the cat/my 4yr old pottering about (she is a very early riser and often does this).

At about 6am DD came in and said 'Mummy the back door is open and it's cold'.

I saw that the back door was indeed wide open and was a bit confused. Then realised my bag was missing. It, and the baby's bag were at the end of the garden and the only thing taken had been my purse - bank cards etc all left.

Anyway, I'm sitting here tonight, really nervous with the doors and windows bolted. I mean it was not exactly heist of the century but I'm freaked out that someone came in and DD could have seen them (luckily she doesn't know anything about it and I hid the missing bag thing from her).

Tell me to get a grip - I don't want to be a nervous wreck about some poor desperate idiot taking advantage of my open back door....

You should definitely tell the police.

It happened to me once when I was staying at my sister's house - I was the only person sleeping downstairs and I had complete heebie jeebies that he saw me asleep on the sofa and decided not to go any further. There were FIVE adults sleeping in the house that night! They took my entire handbag but my bag was found about 8 months later by someone up the road who rang me because my business card was in my diary.

It's really, really horrible :( I was burgled twice in my old flat and every time I came home I was a bit apprehensive that it would have happened again.

You must call the police!

I spotted someone in my back garden a couple of years ago and I'm still edgy at night. The police caught the lad but as he hadn't broken into the house they couldn't charge him Angry.

Come to think of it, I left my purse on the bonnet of my car once as well. They're gonna get me next time. My luck will run out.

Sorry this happened to you. I hope you can put it behind you soon and whatever you do don't take it personally, the thief was not targetting you personally, it sounds opportunistic to me.

YANBU. :(

Happened to us last month, they got in at 5.45ish and my radio alarm going off at ten to disturbed them - they got my handbag, car keys and DH's ipod. we've never double-locked our front door in case of fire etc, we do now - and have the chain on. It's a horrible feeling. Do report it, though.

Sorry this has happened to you Sad

It happened to us last year (they got through a back window and stole DH's car keys - in the middle of the day when we were out) and tbh I still feel horrible about it now - I always make sure the alarm is on when we're out, when we're in bed, etc, and have gotton slightly OCD about checking and re-checking that all the doors and windows are locked. I think most burglars would run a mile if they were disturbed, but it's the thought of them being in my personal space uninvited that gets to me. I agree with others though that have said it was likely to be an opportunistic thief who did this.

I'd also recommend reporting it to the police. Even if they can't do anything to catch who did it, at the very least it'll stay on their records - if there's been similar in the area I'm sure they'll step up patrols in the area and will also be able to offer you crime prevention advice for the future.
