to be so nervous because some little fucker came into our house and nicked my bag last night?

Me and DH were very stupid last night and forgot to lock the bag door (although in our defense the baby was in a state with chicken pocks and crying for hours on end).

This morning about 5am I heard some weird noises in our hallway but in my half sleep I thought it was the cat/my 4yr old pottering about (she is a very early riser and often does this).

At about 6am DD came in and said 'Mummy the back door is open and it's cold'.

I saw that the back door was indeed wide open and was a bit confused. Then realised my bag was missing. It, and the baby's bag were at the end of the garden and the only thing taken had been my purse - bank cards etc all left.

Anyway, I'm sitting here tonight, really nervous with the doors and windows bolted. I mean it was not exactly heist of the century but I'm freaked out that someone came in and DD could have seen them (luckily she doesn't know anything about it and I hid the missing bag thing from her).

Tell me to get a grip - I don't want to be a nervous wreck about some poor desperate idiot taking advantage of my open back door....

Sad it's terrible when it happens and the little prick won't even care how it can affect you.

You'll definitely not forget to secure your doors and windows from now on!

The little prick will have just found your unlocked door by luck and if he/she had seen anyone - including your DD he/she would have left quickly.

Have you contacted the Police? They can offer you crime prevention advice.

Remember that it was just bad luck that you had left the door unsecure. Most criminals won't bother to actually break in, they just look for insecure houses.

armani · 17/03/2011 21:45

Hope your ok kitty, must have been a shock. It's an awful thing to know someone has been in your home and stolen from you. Have you reported it to the police? Stay strong xx

suwoo · 17/03/2011 21:48

How the fuck do these scrotes know when the door is open? Do they have a radar for it? I once left my (cash) works takings in the car overnight accidently and that was the night that the car was broken into. It really does make you feel like they are watching you. Horrible. The police assured me that, that is not the case.

As they say on Crimewatch. Don't have nightmares.

Choufleur · 17/03/2011 21:50

Make sure you report it. If there have been other incidents they may be able to link them.

Try not to worry it was just someone trying their luck and happened to find an unlocked door.

kittycat37 · 17/03/2011 21:51

Thanks DeepPurple and armani.

I'm Blush to say we didn't contact the police as we felt so stupid about the open door and actually the purse only had about £5 in it.

It's so odd that they left the bank cards - it must have been a kid or someone who couldn't have used the cards at all. Or just someone so desperate they could only think about the cash. Really weird as this is a very quiet and 'respectable' area.

Oh well, it's taught us to be more careful.

Maybe I should call the police in case other things have been going on.

To cheer you up (hopefully), at least there's a laugh in your 'my back door open'... Wink

Sorry, been one of those days!

kittycat37 · 17/03/2011 21:54

Suwoo - sorry that happened. What is also weird is that our back garden is fairly long so for them to just try the back door they had to walk a long way - and it;s overlooked by the two sets of neighbours so they were taking a big risk just for the off chance it was open.

Choufleur - I think you're right - I will call the police tomorrow.

OP posts:
kittycat37 · 17/03/2011 21:55

Spenguin - oh yes, hmmmmm Blush

Vagabond · 17/03/2011 21:56

Kitty - how awful. My partner's been away for the last week and I've been shitting myself at home alone in the country. I wake at every noise and barely close an eye. I'm exhausted!

The best thing I can say is that at least the perps were only after your cash/wallet and didn't intrude on your very personal space.

Keep safe. But please, tell the police. At least then, they can record it for their files.

VivaLeBeaver · 17/03/2011 21:59

Its just worrying as it makes you wonder how many times they've tried your door in the past when its been locked. Bastards.

kittycat37 · 17/03/2011 22:01

Yes Viva, I;m currently scared of going into the kitchen in case I see someone trying the (now locked) back door - that would be bad enough.

OP posts:
MaisyMooCow · 17/03/2011 22:02

Viva Exactly what I was thinking.

There are opportunists everywhere. Bloody scrote!

VivaLeBeaver · 17/03/2011 22:04

Definetly call the police. Its logged so they're aware of it. They may dust for fingerprints and find something. They can give crime prevention advice. Can you secure your garden more so people can't get in easily?

I saw a prog on TV once with an ex burgular saying how he picked his houses. He said if tehre was a house with a locked gate/high fence and one with no gate/unlocked gate he'd pick the one with the unlocked/no gate every time.

suwoo · 17/03/2011 22:07

You must call the police. They have been brilliant the million times our cars have been broken into- they always take fingerprints and actually caught the scrote once Shock

kittycat37 · 17/03/2011 22:08

We're currently renting Viva so I'm not sure what we can do = the fence isn't very high at the back. But I think the security of the house is pretty good if the doors and windows are locked.

There's a light that lights up most of the garden which I currently have on (never bothered before).

Also the garden backs onto the railway line which has quite a lot of wooded ground running alongside it which must be where they came from I think.

It's worth speaking to the Police. You might not be the only one in the area. Have you got a burglar alarm? I'm thinking that it's worth gettign a door chime for the door so when it's opened it makes a sound. Scares most scroates away. They aren't expensive. www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.jsp?fh_view_size=10&fh_reffacet=categories&fh_location=%2f%2fcatalog01%2fen_GB%2fcategories%3C{9372188}&fh_refview=search&fh_search=door+chime+contact&fh_refpath=facet_159016185&fh_eds=%C3%9F

DeepPurple · 17/03/2011 22:09

grrr links!

door chime

kittycat37 · 17/03/2011 22:10

Thanks DeepPurple - good suggestions. I'll look into it.

OP posts:
Honeybee79 · 17/03/2011 22:15

Hope you're OK Kitty. Must have been a horrible experience.

I think you should call the Police's non emergency number and report it. I also second the idea of a door chime.

Dawnybabe · 17/03/2011 22:17

I went out the other morning to find my keys hanging in the door lock outside... Blush

We'd come home the day before about fourish so they'd been there quite a while.

ThisIsANiceCage · 17/03/2011 22:17

Definitely call the police.

I thought I'd get the brushoff from the cops when some little fuckers wrenched up a potted bay tree from outside the house a couple of weeks ago. But actually they were very thorough about taking the report and checking whether there was possible CCTV or forensics.

So sorry you're going through this.

kittycat37 · 17/03/2011 22:18

Dawnybabe - glad it;s not just me with the security lapses!!! I've done that before too.

OP posts:
TheSleepFairy · 17/03/2011 22:19

Horrible isn't it kitty
1st time it happened to us I heard them in the house & wandered down in my knickers to see what was going on.

That scared the shit out of them & they legged it.

2nd time it happened I didn't hear a thing, it was only when I went to leave I realized that I had not miss placed my car keys, the fecking car had been stollen Sad

Police were brilliant both times, 1st they took prints & attended within minutes & when we rang about the car they waited for 30 minutes before coming to the house so I could arrange for the children not to be about & they found the car via tracker.

The above doesn't help you but I just wanted to let you know I understand how you are feeling.

We double check our doors all the time now, I'm intent on not letting the fuckers perbs get a 3rd chance Angry
