to not tip my hairdresser?

Just wondered what everybody else thinks about this - as I always go to the hairdresser on my own, I've no idea what anybody else does! I occasionally tip my hairdresser (eg if it's £37 I'll round it up to £40) but not always - came to £75 last time as I had highlights too and I didn't know what to do so just left it.

I don't want to tip and risk offence, if it's against convention, but I don't want them to think I'm mean. On the other hand it's pretty expensive! As far as I know people don't tip for other luxuries, like massages or manicures (do they?) so I assumed hairdressing was no different. I don't tip taxi drivers as a taxi ride usually cleans me out anyway! and I do usually tip in restaurants provided I've had good service.

Would love to know what others do!

I don't tip my hairdresser but she is self employed rather than on a wage. Plus she's a friend so it would be a bit awkward.

Never tipped cabbies but I rarely use them.

Always tip waiting staff.

I always tip the hair washer. They get crap pay. I used to work in a hairdresser on Saturday, was on my feet all day, washed hair for every hairdresser and get paid £15 a day Angry

Oh, so complicated. I tip in restaurants and round up taxi fares if they were nice. I used to tip hairdressers but don't any more because: there isn't a 'tip box' on the counter as there was at one place or any other sign of expectation, I pay by card and don't always have suitable cash with me, I always request a particular stylist and the way their system works is that they get promoted to higher wages and charges based on number of client requests and, I've never seen anyone else do it. I did have this mild sense of awkwardness that perhaps it is expected, though belie that with utter confidence when paying and thanking them so as to give the impression it just hasn't occurred to me and it's not that I'm unhappy or witholding, but I've been going to the same stylist for long enough that she knows I don't tip and is still pleasant to me - so I hope I haven't got it horribly wrong!

I always tip 10% up to a maximum of a tenner.
