Ooh, have often thought of doing this, but always managed to resist! Luckily SIL and MIL are hairdressers so no longer have to pay for haircuts anyway Grin

SeeJaneKick · 17/03/2011 16:11

My mate did it and her hair was bizzarre....it was much shrter at the back than at the sides.

hair needs layering underneath. Google how to cut...it's not hard. I do my own all the time.

OTTMummA · 17/03/2011 16:12

I did it the other day, i could feel the dry split ends in the shower and had enough, i only cut of about 2 inches and then chopped into my hair a little at the ends, looks fine and hair feels healthier.
I wouldn't do it all the time, but i am very impatient.

FrogGreen · 17/03/2011 16:14

Cheapest way to get your hair cut - go to a men's barber. They won't style it with fancy layers or whatever. But they will make it shorter.

Quenelle · 17/03/2011 16:35

Do you have a college near you that teachers hair and beauty stuff? They're very cheap. You need to allow a lot more time though.

cyb · 17/03/2011 16:38

I put my hair in bunches and chopped it off

it worked fine!

ChippingInMistressSteamMop · 17/03/2011 16:40

Are you going to do it?

I sometimes get very very very very tempted... except anytime I've tried on a short wig or anything I've looked like Bessie Bunter - so it's staying how it is for the forseeable!!

SlainteBooyFeckingHoo · 17/03/2011 16:48

any local training colleges near you? mine does a cut and blowdry for £7.

diddl · 17/03/2011 16:49

"I put my hair in bunches and chopped it off"

Me too.

Been doing it for years.

Hate going to the hairdresser.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 17/03/2011 17:02

I have the MN haircut and it's fab. I detest going to the hairdressers and this saves me the bother. All layered and choppy. Lovely :)

NorthernGobshite · 17/03/2011 17:05

This is how I always cut my hair. It works best with curly or wavy hair. Pony tail on top of head, pull bobble down to ends to the point I want to cut it, chop off ends, ta da! I haven't paid for a haircut in years, and get compliments on my lovely wavy layers!

TragicallyHip · 17/03/2011 17:08

MN Hair cut works a treat. I have it, my sister has it, and I've just done it on two friends.

The joy of it is that trims are so easy (and free) so you can really have your hair trimmed every fortnight if you like and it always looks great. Grin

PuraVida · 17/03/2011 17:15

I did it. Still growing out my mullet. My advice is don't

LittleJennyRobyn · 17/03/2011 17:17

Another vote for the MN haircut, It's fab!

Been cutting my own hair for years, I have long hair and hate going to the hairdressers so prefer to do it myself.

It used to take me ages to layer it before, now i can do it in ten minutes.

harassedinherpants · 17/03/2011 17:19

Really Gwendoline?! I never knew!

Can confirm that Gwendolines hair looks rather fab Grin.

TrillianAstra · 17/03/2011 17:21

MN haircut is 'put in a ponytail and chop off', it's just a very oddly-positioned ponytail.

I do it, but my hair is long and curly and fine, so:
curly = you can't see the ends
fine = no triangle head
long = no crazy fringe

NorthernGobshite · 17/03/2011 17:23

tragicallyhip I want one! [Toddles off to ebay to buy creaclip...]

tyler80 · 17/03/2011 17:24

I've done this several times, do the ponytail bit and then neaten up so front isn't longer than the back. My hair has got a wave in it so it doesn't matter if it's not exactly the same length and 90% of the time it's tied back anyhow

bigmouthstrikesagain · 17/03/2011 17:31

Yep whether you can 'get away' with a diy haircut depends very much on your hair type mine is wavy and fine and long (but there is loads of it) - and I have often used the poy tail method to cut my hair without people pointing and laughing afterwards - honest! But my sons poker straight thick blond hair shows up all my haircutting inadequacies (still cut his hair though)because i am cheap

AlmaMartyr · 17/03/2011 17:37

I do the MN haircut. My hair is waist length, thick and very wavy. If I go to a hairdresser I pay a lot for them to just trim it and doing it myself looks just as good.

sims2fan · 17/03/2011 17:58

I just sort of hold onto mine then cut it. I've done it 3 times now and it has always turned out ok, though I am not that bothered about my looks so actually other people may think it looks awful! I like to think that my hairdresser relative would have offered to trim it if it was too bad though, and she never has so perhaps it is ok!

TragicallyHip · 17/03/2011 18:05

Yes I want one too NorthernGobshite!

Saw it on ebay for a tenner!

diddl · 17/03/2011 18:17

I thought that girls hair looked awful after she´d used that clip thing on it.
