Ormirian I have to say, all the meeja angst about 'vacuous hags' and 'laptop-wielding harpies' did make me think about ducking stools and scolds' bridles and all the more literal ways women have historically been made to shut up.

I think MN activates all kinds of ancient fears. Which is great Grin

smokinaces · 18/03/2011 09:52

ooh dear, I definately shouldnt fit in then.

I read The Sun. I shop in Asda, in my Pug 206. I have 2 boys and am a single mum living in a council estate, working part time. I dont have a uni degree, and voted Labour in the last election. I have skinny jeans, and live in Kent.

I have a laptop though? Can I stay?!!

Ormirian · 18/03/2011 09:53

Yes precisely. Perhaps we should calls ourselves ScoldsNet.

Trinaluce · 18/03/2011 09:57

I love Green & Blacks and am currently using a laptop. That's as far as his assertions go....

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 18/03/2011 09:59

Another Times reader here - though I would happily pick up one of Euphemia's discarded Guardians, as I was raised a Guardian reader and converted to the Times when I married dh. He's said we could have the Guardian too, but if I had two papers to read, and two lots of sudokus and other puzzles to do in the morning, I'd never get any mumsnetting housework done!

I do own a laptop, but don't use it much as I prefer my desktop, and that's too large and heavy for me to wield it effectively.

I would get the occasional delivery from Ocado, but like mmsmum, I live in Scotland and they don't deliver here, so Tesco deliver my shopping.

Middle class - yes.
English - yes, but living in scotland.
Harpy - no - more of a cruel hag - just ask the dses.
SAHM - yes, due to depression.

Vote Lib Dem - partly to irritate dh, who votes Tory, so I cancel him out.
Degree - yes, but qualified nurse too
Mid 40s
Three children, none called Felix or Tallulah - I think the boys would have been very upset if I had called them Tallulah.
Local primary and secondary - yes now, though ds1 and ds2 both went to selective schools before we moved. One was the closest secondary school to us though - does that count?
Victorian house - no
North London - no - near Paisley, actually
Country weekends - well, we live practically in the country, so I suppose yes.
Fiat multipla - no big mercedes estate and volvo 850 estate - for transporting 3 teenagers and a labrador.

poppyknot · 18/03/2011 10:05

sfxmum · 18/03/2011 10:29

well the article is basically advertising for his new status of educational guru, expect a few books to come out of it over the coming years
and of course he is fully engaging his famed charm
bless

NormanTebbit · 18/03/2011 10:35

Christ yes, we will be treated to his blow by blow account of establishing his 'free school' ad nauseam. He will probably have a fly on the wall documentary, book, interviews in The Times.

Th school results will be good, I'm sure, and we will all be happy for his children and all the other little Poppies, Tybalts and Jakes who have been lucky enough to score a quasi private education for free.

I do wonder how they will manage with budget restrictions, lack of resources. Our school has a new building but no money to buy books to stock the library.

And I love the Telegraph, gave up the Guardian when I was taught to always read the enemy, decided I rather agreed with them after all.

Ormirian · 18/03/2011 11:39

"40 years ago they were the sort who automatically voted Tory and sniffed at the notion of someone not white moving in next door." You are assuming there are none of those left? Grin

messylittlemonkey · 18/03/2011 11:40

I know. I couldn't give a monkey's about his opinion, just happen to think he summed us up fairly well.
