KInd of posts
always about eating/staying up late

always ignoring most french parents just hit their kids within an inch of their lives?

maybe thats why they sit at tables for HOURS

why do we want to have kids playing all the time everywhere yet have this ODD out of place hang up about meals?

OP posts:

Not my experience of French parents......

FlingonTheValiant · 16/03/2011 16:00

Well my french family and friends do not hit their children. And our children will not be hit. I think that idea is outdated.

They sit at the table for a long time because they don't know that there is an alternative.

Callisto · 16/03/2011 16:01

Not sure what you're going on about. Perhaps you could explain?

Only seen one French parent hit. Also seen plenty of Fremxh children who don't sit at the table.

I think it's just much more of a cultural norm to spend time around the table talking etc and the children take part on those discussions.

Staying up late, yes, they also tend to drop naps at a later age.

Not my experience either. You're generalising, from what, I don't know.

From my experience (and I work in France), children from the ages of 6 upwards, sit in restaurants with their parents and are really well-behaved. The parents engage with them - maybe that's the difference. Also, none of the French people I know snack, and they don't give their children snacks either. The French eating culture is one of pleasure, it takes time, and the parents there invest that time in their families and childrens' mealtimes.

Britain is very odd... so many mothers bleat and lament at the child haters, yet they don't understand that to have a child that fits into society they have to put some work in... that's what parenthood is, it's not a passive arrangement - or it shouldn't be. Hmm

Don't know enough to agree or disagree with the example given but on the whole I think yanbu. There's as much variation between families as between nations ime.

I've yet to see any 3 year olds in rear facing travel seats as is often reported is the case in all of Scandinavia and I know lots of Danish 3 year olds.

FlingonTheValiant · 16/03/2011 16:06

I'm tempted to finish that for you, MadMomma... Wink

MadMommaMemoo · 16/03/2011 16:09

I can't remember it! Please do finish it for me.

I hate it when people say 'in Europe' as if every country in Europe is the same :)

susie100 · 16/03/2011 16:20

Well in Italy we attach electrodes under their clothes so if they DARE leave the table before they have finished their chicken alla cacciatora they get an electric shock. The French are soft.
That 'l learn 'em.

hocuspontas · 16/03/2011 16:24

Yeah, I hate the ' In Europe the children are SO far ahead of ours academically and they don't start full time school until they are 13' type statements

Ciske · 16/03/2011 16:26

The UK is also Europe.

(runs & hides)

UnseenAcademicalMum · 16/03/2011 16:27

Since when was Britain not in Europe then? I hate people talking about 'europe' as though it is a continent which Britain is not part of.

susie100 · 16/03/2011 16:28

I think people mean continental europe when they say europe

cumbria81 · 16/03/2011 16:29

Actually, I agree. I have lived in France and Germany and there are plenty of little annoying buggers who can't sit still, be quiet and behave there.

Bumperlicious · 16/03/2011 16:34

Oh yes, all the 'in Spain children never go to bed at 7'. Well it's sunny there you can kick them outside. And sorry but I like my masterchef without a side of whining tired children!
