Two children in a pram

LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 16/03/2011 15:46

More for conversation that anything really, I asked my mother's advice on getting a double pushchair, as there will be a similar age gap with my two as there were with my brother and myself.

Now she won't stop going on about getting a traditional pram and putting both children in it. DD will be 2. I have told her as gently as I can that it just isn't the done thing any more, for safety fears, and that I won't be doing it. She won't have it, and thinks I am being completely ridiculous.

Would you consider doing this? Am I being unreasonable (and precious) to think that it's totally inappropriate?

I have done it and it was fine! The older one wore reins attached to the D rings in the pram base and the baby slept quite happily next to her. Not a problem imo!

I think I have a piccie somewhere of them, will try and find it and put it on my profile :)

nubbins · 16/03/2011 15:48

I have done it as a one off when i didn't have my side car on, but wouldn't do it day to day as my only means of transporting 2 kids.

FlingonTheValiant · 16/03/2011 15:50

I don't think it's inappropriate. You can get a harness for the older child.

If I could have a traditional pram when I have another I would do it.

mycatoscar · 16/03/2011 15:50

I wouldnt say its totally innapropriate, but I would say that traditional prams are quite cumbersome and that you need something you can pop in and out of the car easily

what safety fears do you have?

going · 16/03/2011 15:50

YANBU, traditional prams cost £££'s, can't be put in the car, are just not practical for everyday use!

I assume she means something like this www.guandongenterprisesltd.com/

Fernie3 · 16/03/2011 15:51

i used to have a seat attached to the top which is a good option.

littleducks · 16/03/2011 15:51

Thats what my mum did with me! I sat up at the bottom of the pram while my brother lay down, apparently i used to like it when he wriggled his toes under the blanket

Just tell her a traditional pram wont fit t5hrough shopps doors around aisle

BertieBotts · 16/03/2011 15:51

It depends on your circumstances surely? If you don't feel it will be practical then tell her you will be buying X pram and if she wants the big traditional one she can buy it and keep it at her house!

BertieBotts · 16/03/2011 15:52

Um going? I don't think the OP will fit both of her children in a mug Grin

DuplicitousBitch · 16/03/2011 15:52

its impractical when you could just get something light and well designed instead.

Confused how is a mug with Will and Kate grinning away like mugs going to help with a pram problem?!
Especially given that the mugshot of William appears to actually be Harry [even more Confused]

woopsidaisy · 16/03/2011 15:55

Eh,I did it loads with my DCs! Why is it inappropriate?
When DS1 was 2.6y DS2 was born, and I often took the 2 of them out and about in the pram. DS1 would sit up,and there was plenty of room for DS2.
As DS2 got older DS1 propped him up between his legs and gave him a cuddle as he showed him all he saw...quite sweet actually.
And I have two friends who did this also.
I will admit that I did feel I looked like a traveller, but so what?
It was very handy,Grin

going · 16/03/2011 15:56

Whoops Blush meant this beautiful but impractical Silver Cross www.silvercross.co.uk/heritage-collection/kensington-pram/. Am suprised then don't sell the toddler seats to go on top anymore.

BertieBotts · 16/03/2011 15:58

ROFL PlasticLentilWeaver - it is Harry! How bizarre.

Bogeyface · 16/03/2011 16:02

You can get the toddler seats, I got mine from babybirds.

I dont see why people dont like big prams! Mine is a vintage pram (AKA Old :o) but it is the same as the one on the link above (not the mug!) and its great. It it brilliant around the shops and has a maaaaassive shopping tray compared to modern ones. The only downside is getting stopped every 10 minutes by elderly ladies raving about how everyone should still use them. Makes shopping trips last forever :o

And you can get a nice quality one from ebay for less than half the price of a bugaboo!

LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 16/03/2011 16:03

OK, not just safety, but my objections are:

DD leaping out
I don't have a pram
I don't want a pram
I drive a Honda Jazz (small boot)
I don't have enough money to buy a pram
My mother was far from the best mother in the world, so yes, an element of it is me not wanting to do what she did, and her thinking I am boring and conservative. (No I won't be giving my babies alcohol or weed either, Mother).

OP posts:
Bogeyface · 16/03/2011 16:06

Fair enough if you dont want one for the reasons above, they are not the cheapest option certainly, and do take alot of space.

But safety wise, they are fine, so on that basis YABU!

Could you use a sling and a single buggy to save you paying out for a double?

Gracie123 · 16/03/2011 16:09

I put my 3yo in with my 6mo all the time. He's very good about sitting still with her. In fact I started doing it when she was only a few weeks old.

I never considered it dangerous Blush

We didn't get a double buggy, because we wanted to encourage him to walk. He only ever jumps in with her at the end of a really long trip when he is exhausted. At that point he is happy to snuggle down quietly and nap with her.

Gracie123 · 16/03/2011 16:12

P.S I have a Leebruss, but I don't drive at the moment so it doesn't need to fit in a car and I wanted something big to carry all my shopping in Grin

Also, it was cheap second hand on ebay (£120). Still a lot of money, but no way I would pay new prices for one!

Bloodymary · 16/03/2011 16:12

When I had my first DD I had a second hand 'silver cross', it was a great pram, but not really practical.
So I ended up getting a smaller one (also second hand) to use as well.
Worked very well, tho I did love pushing the 'silver cross'.
Plus, yes of course I would put 2 DC in it!

I wouldnt!!

They are huge. Must be horrible to take them on buses or to fit into the car boot!
My DS1 was a little horror at just turned 2. I'd have had to watch them both like a hawk if they were in the same pram when DS2 was tiny or DS2 would have been poked in the eye/had things put in his mouth/been poked and smacked constantly!

Gracie123 · 16/03/2011 16:21

In fairness, we live in the centre of town, so i dont ever need to take it on a bus.
That probably would be a nightmare.
