to expect the office lady to offer me a cake

started work today as a temp in an office.

Me and 3 other permenant ladies. One of the other ladies just asked the other 2 if they wanted a cake while she was out, but didn't ask me. So now they are all sitting in the next room with their cakes.

Why would anyone do something like that? Just don't get it.

Perhaps they take turns?

Bit rude though

Etalb · 16/03/2011 13:24

Don't worry U will stay thin and they can all stay smug sitting on their fat bums! That's very mean!

stealthsquiggle · 16/03/2011 13:25

Uber-mean.

Just keep telling yourself you are probably earning more than they are Grin

electra · 16/03/2011 13:25

Wow - that is soooooo rude. I would never do such a thing. It doesn't matter if you're new or have been there 100 years - you should be treated with the same courtesy as anyone else.

Desperateforthinnerthighs · 16/03/2011 13:25

I used to temp - it's a bit like being invisible really - oooh we wont ask her, she;s only a temp Hmm

  • its normal but yeah rude as well!!
destructogirl · 16/03/2011 13:27

Welcome to the world of temping. They are linen handkerchiefs while you are a disposable tissue.
I feel your pain, have been there.

I can't answer why though, I don't understand why they would treat someone like that. I'm in a permanent job now and I wouldn't do it, it's horrible.

Sorry your first day has been so crap Sad

jumpingbeans · 16/03/2011 13:29

You should have said, as she got near the door, no thanks, not for me, with a big beaminmg smile, she would have crawlwed out the door:o

SlainteBooyFeckingHoo · 16/03/2011 13:30

make her feel guilty be buying them all a cake tomorrow. or make a point of offering the otehr two but not her.

bullet234 · 16/03/2011 13:32

On my first day temping in an office once, the very first thing the manager said when he found out that I had been hired was:
"how much is that going to cost then?"

Joolyjoolyjoo · 16/03/2011 13:32

Aww- that's really mean of her! Bring your own HUGE cake tomorrow!

Buda · 16/03/2011 13:33

The wonderful world of temping!

MooMooFarm · 16/03/2011 13:35

They sound horrible - but console yourself with knowing that you are 'playing' on mumsnet on your first day in a new temping job - you rebel!! Grin

BluePyjamas · 16/03/2011 13:37

Definitely bring in biscuits tomorrow and offer to all with sweet smile. Hope the cow chokes on it.

I HATE rudeness like that. The other two can't be much better if they didn't say anything.

spongefingerssavedmylife · 16/03/2011 13:39

Ummmm, mean but why are you on mn on first day of new job Hmm

colditz · 16/03/2011 13:39

Lunch break

iphone
not difficult, really!

Hammy02 · 16/03/2011 13:40

I thought that too Bluepyjamas. One of them could've said, 'What about Smug Married, do you want anything'.

BarbaraBar · 16/03/2011 13:41

Are they big ol' heifers?

bupcakesandcunting · 16/03/2011 13:41

You can get your own back on them if you like. PM me for tips.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow · 16/03/2011 13:42

I am on mumsnet on my first day because i'm annoyed about the cake.

Never mind, they'll be the fat ones!

crystalglasses · 16/03/2011 13:44

Why are some people so rude and excluding at work? Doesn't only happen with temps.

Hammy02 · 16/03/2011 14:03

I used to work with a girl that didn't even acknowledge me when I walked in to work. No 'hello', nothing. I wasn't late or anything, she chose to work an earlier shift. She went out of her way to make my time at work miserable. Still don't know why.

MooMooFarm · 16/03/2011 14:06

Hammy I used to work with someone like that too - Yours doesn't have a face like a moose and chins on her ankles does she?

BarbieLovesKen · 16/03/2011 14:12

God thats very strange. If anything I go out of my way to be friendly to the new person (probably more so than the oldies Grin) regardless of them being a temp/ permanent etc..

stubbornhubby · 16/03/2011 14:13

why don't you come into work tomorrow with a Friendship Cake?

and three slices of Humble Pie, as well

KnittedBreast · 16/03/2011 14:15

id have said "ooooh, cake, lovely! could you have a piece waiting for me on my desk when i get back? thanks" then march off
