to make puree now and freeze it

Not weaning yet, but Ive got some carrots to use up and thought it would be a good idea to make some puree now, and freeze it (weaning is two months away)

AIBU? DP's family think Im a total nutter! Am I?

Bogeyface · 15/03/2011 12:09

You'd be more of a nutter if you ended up wasting them and binning them.

Why is it a problem for them?! I think its sensible to use them in this way, it isnt as if you are TTC and doing it!

Mammie81 · 15/03/2011 12:12

Apparently its wrong not to give them fresh food and I should buy a book on do's and dont's. Hmm

IAmTheCookieMonster · 15/03/2011 12:14

they expect you to make fresh puree every time? I froze it into icecube trays.

The only thing with doing it two months early is that if you start pureeing all your left over veg from now you'll have a whole freezer by the time you wean!

I'd make a carrot cake, yum!

parakeet · 15/03/2011 12:17

Also she might not like carrot puree, so I wouldn't make a humongous batch (of anything) until you've tried it out first.

But both mine like carrot - it's fairly sweet.

ladyfirenze · 15/03/2011 12:18

I never used puree. I chose baby-led weaning with finger foods and delayed solids until dts were able to reach for the food and feed themselves. much easier for me!

Bogeyface · 15/03/2011 12:21

Any book on puree weaning will contain atleast one sentence saying that you can freeze puree in icecube trays etc. Guaranteed! So buy a book and photocopy that bit to show them!

DONTS would include

Dont discuss any aspect of weaning with your ILs
Dont allow their opinions to alter the way you wean, when you know that you are following approved and safe advice
Dont feed the baby vodka Jelly

Apart from that, it's all fine Wink

GlynisIsFixed · 15/03/2011 12:21

if you're worried about having a freezer full of pureed food, you could freeze it and then put it into your next casserole...just make sure you label them up

apricots don't taste so bad in shepherds pie though [blus]

Mammie81 · 15/03/2011 12:23

No no. BLW doesnt work. Babies cant do it, its impossible. All the mothers that say it does work are wrong. And apple should be added to all puree's.

I sooo want to prove them wrong on the BLW! AIBU part II Grin

OP posts:
Mammie81 · 15/03/2011 12:24

I have a book btw. They just dont want to hear anything from the book I have as it does prove them wrong.

YANBU but you are wasting your time. You'd be far better off chopping them up, blanching them, and freeze them ready to add to a soup or casserole.

I tried purees for two weeks before switching to BLW and finger foods. It's a lot less hassle and more fun for you both.

Dancergirl · 15/03/2011 12:29

Do you LIKE making extra work for yourself??

Don't bother making purees, just give your baby sticks of lightly cooked carrot.

How do you know weaning is 2 months away out of interest?

IAmTheCookieMonster · 15/03/2011 12:29

mammie, why do you think that baby bed weaning doesn't work?

Mammie81 · 15/03/2011 12:31

I dont know for sure its 2 months away, but DS is 3.5 months so Im guessing it might happen around then. We'll see how he goes.

Im making a cake instead I think Smile

Mammie81 · 15/03/2011 12:32

I do think BLW can work, my friends have done it. Thats the voice of DP's aunt and mother!

OP posts:
TattyDevine · 15/03/2011 12:34

I doubt she's marked the exact date in her diary Dancergirl

JiltedJohnsJulie · 15/03/2011 12:37

I'd be more tempted to blanche them in batches for you. DD refused purees completely.

MamaLazarou · 15/03/2011 12:37

YANBU

(But BLW worked for us. Who cares what aunts and MILs say)

it is very controversial still (blw) even hv and the like don't understand it properly.

i was told my twin babies would be iron deficient after six months if i dodn't shovel puree down their necks three times a day. what rot!

at eleven months they were still ebf, on the 95th centile (like i gave a shit) and a picture of health! they are six now and eat an excellent variety of foods. they totally love trying a new thing, even if it's challenging - curries/goulash etc.

in france it used to be illegal to wean before 12 months (a long time ago!) unless you had medical backing from a doctor.

ladyfirenze · 15/03/2011 12:47

dodn't? didn't!!!

Wombletini · 15/03/2011 12:52

Do what you want to.
My DD was a mixture of purees & BLW.
And she eats everything apart from Sprouts!

Mammie81 · 15/03/2011 12:52

The reason they want me to add apple to everything is because Ellas Kitchen (SIL uses, yeah and they want me to make everything fresh) add fruit to their recipes. Honestly everyone should be left to do whats best for them, it really annoys me when they butt in!

Im sure they will look down their noses at BLW when I start because its messy (I was going to try a bit of a mixture of both) Sod 'em!

OP posts:
JiltedJohnsJulie · 15/03/2011 21:01

Totally agree that everyone should be left to do whats best for them and their baby, provided its safe of course.

Your DS might just prove them wrong, my DD took a sandwich and ate it. It was her first food, hence refusing purees. Well, who wants to eat manky purees when you can have proper stuff Grin.

Do what you like and I hope you enjoyed your cake.

iscream · 16/03/2011 07:09

Tell them baby is going to be a raw food veggie!

I wouldn't bother, a baby doesn't eat so much you need to stock pile cubes of puree, and chances are you will cook carrots again soon.
My ds hated carrots, his first pureed food, and still isn't a fan to this day unless they are cooked in with a roast.

Chil1234 · 16/03/2011 07:15

I used to love spoon-feeding baby DS in his high chair. LOL! I used to cook up little batches of things and freeze them in ice-cube trays. Worked a treat. It's one of those baby phases that doesn't last all that long but I remember it with huge fondness. We started with me holding the spoon... then progressed to me filling the spoon and him picking it up and putting it in his mouth. Lots of good interactive fun! Good luck...
