to think laminate floor is not naff?

This snobbery about laminate floor and leather sofas gets on my nerves.

They are not naff, they are PRACTICAL. You can keep the floor clean, really clean.

Carpets are filthy and they smell.

We had a lovely -and clean- decade when laminate floor was 'trendy'. Now someone has decided that it is 'naf' Hmm and i fear we are going back to smelly carpets.

AIBU to think they are ok and should stay?

Yes, the wood in our sitting room is scratched too. But it still looks good if not better with the scratches as it fits with the house. I like carpet in the bedrooms and we have a runner on the stairs but it can be a pain. We do have carpet in the family/tv room but that is strictly socks only.

fedupofnamechanging · 14/03/2011 13:24

Just to point out that my sofa is not from DFS, despite its leather and corner naffness Smile.

It's surviving my 4 DC quite well though, so it's staying!

BiddytheKnackerwoman · 14/03/2011 13:26

Well I'm sat here crying, just sobbing whilst staring at my shiny laminate flooring all through my downstairs and sitting on my Argos brown leather sofa. I SHALL be taking out a humungous bank loan forthwith to fund real wood. Nothing will complement my flat packed furniture better.

OR OR I shall blow it on a 60 inch plasma as my run of the mill 32" is just incongruous with my decor.

Damn you, damn you to hell easily cleanable floor and scrubbable settee.

myredcardigan · 14/03/2011 13:43

As long as you haven't got those awful wavy mirrors and borders on your wallpaper you should be fine! Wink

wfrances · 14/03/2011 13:46

i have laminate downstairs and hate it ,we put laminate through hall, dining and lounge as a stop gap, until youngest ds is a bit older as he loves playing footie, and bringing his bike through the house.we will get a good quality wool carpet that matches upstairs when hes older, same with leather sofas now hes 7 we are thinking of changing them,

BiddytheKnackerwoman · 14/03/2011 13:47

No mirrors or borders but was considering a feature wall. I am behind the times frankly. What is de rigeur these with those in the know?

or with my laminate and leather am I beyond saving I wonder?

BiddytheKnackerwoman · 14/03/2011 13:48

these days

Fiddledee · 14/03/2011 13:54

so what floor do you have instead of laminate with young children? Don't want laminate but wood scratches and amtico is just as expensive as wood and scratches too plus looks fake. In despair as moving to a house with cream carpets and large muddy garden this week.

Laquitar · 14/03/2011 13:54

myredcardigan i have those too Grin

Well my mum bought 2 of them for me on one of her visits to uk. She said they look very ...unusual Grin Grin.

I have them in the dc's room and they like them.

No wallpaper, no borders, no feature wall.

myredcardigan · 14/03/2011 14:01

Grin What can I say?

Oh and I know wood scratches but if you go for a good quality wood they don't look too bad and in fact, can add to the character. Laminate scratches too and it just sounds so ...plasticy

myredcardigan · 14/03/2011 14:03

Oh and wallpaper is fine, good in fact. I could spend hours sitting on the lovely sofa in John Lewis looking through their big, heavy wallpaper books. Though now I come to think of it, I think it's actually a leather sofa!!! Shock

diddl · 14/03/2011 15:50

"Not sure why the alternative to laminate is carpet? Wood is far nicer."

Because not everyone can afford wood & it doesn´t suit all houses?

myredcardigan · 14/03/2011 15:53

Well if a house suits laminate then surely it suits wood?

valiumredhead · 14/03/2011 15:53

Wood is nicer in some people's opinions but very expensive.

DooinMeCleanin · 14/03/2011 15:54

I have a leather sofa and oak effect laminate. Seeing the dirt that is scrubbed off them daily is enough to put me off carpet and fabric upholstery for life. God only knows how much muck must be hidden in them

But then again I live right opposite a park and two very muddy children and a very muddy dog. Any fabric would be wrecked within minutes of being layed. The rug gets washed in the machine once a week and still never looks clean.

diddl · 14/03/2011 16:02

"Well if a house suits laminate then surely it suits wood?"

Perhaps I should have put that there are some houses where wood would be a waste?

expatinscotland · 14/03/2011 16:04

Wood is often unaffordable for a lot of people, it's not just because they are naff.

Hmm
myredcardigan · 14/03/2011 18:43

I didn't say anyone was naff. I laughed at naff wavy mirrors though.

Not sure what you mean about a house not being worth wood.

myredcardigan · 14/03/2011 18:43

Sorry, last part was to Diddl.

Rannaldini · 14/03/2011 18:47

it is naff

i'm sorry that it upsets but it is naff and like a gym hall
often want to mark up for netball

TooManyBlossoms · 14/03/2011 18:54

Although I love the look and feel of carpet, it repulses me. I've got hard flooring nearly all the way downstairs, which I mop daily, and the dirt that comes off it is amazing. There are 3 of us, 2 dogs and a cat tramping dirt through the house, and it's so nice to be able to wipe it up rather than faff about with carpet cleaners.

We've just redecorated our living room, and have put down new laminate floor - it's a zebrano effect from Ikea, and I think it looks fab.

We've also got chocolate leather sofas. And a feature wall. Quick, call the interior decorating police...

usualsuspect · 14/03/2011 18:55

I like being naff

ambarth · 14/03/2011 19:10

I love my CLEAN naff home. Grin

myredcardigan · 14/03/2011 19:14

Yes but wood is also clean and warm and doesn't sound like plastic! Grin

scotsgirl23 · 14/03/2011 19:17

Hmmm, with 3 pale coloured long haired cats and a baby I'll stick with my naff laminate! There was navy carpet everywhere when we moved in and it never looked clean due to the cats. Their claws damaged our previous sanded wood floors and engineered hardwood was way beyond the budget

Naff suits us - although shoot me, I have a feature wall and the house is about 200 years old!
