to think laminate floor is not naff?

This snobbery about laminate floor and leather sofas gets on my nerves.

They are not naff, they are PRACTICAL. You can keep the floor clean, really clean.

Carpets are filthy and they smell.

We had a lovely -and clean- decade when laminate floor was 'trendy'. Now someone has decided that it is 'naf' Hmm and i fear we are going back to smelly carpets.

AIBU to think they are ok and should stay?

I have carpet, tile, laminate, wood and karndean floor coverings in different parts of the house for different reasons. And leather sofas. If people think any of it's naff I hope they are polite enough to keep it to themselves.

Psammead · 14/03/2011 09:56

We have stone in the kitchen and bathroom, and tiles in the hallway and downstairs loo. The rest is laminate. We considered hardwood but it taken a lot of maintenance. We have under floor heating so it's all cosy.

If stone wasn't so unforgiving to babies' heads and knees I would have it everywhere! With the heating it is so warm.

Meglet · 14/03/2011 09:57

yanbu. My house is all laminate (except the stairs).

It doesn't matter how much mud, food, pen, wee, poo or sick gets thrown at it, it still comes up sparkly and clean.

FWIW I wish I had a leather sofa too as the dc's are destroying my cream one.

You are my hero, Laquitar!

VinegarTits · 14/03/2011 10:00

i would not have survived the toddler years without laminate floor and leather sofas, enviromental health would have been called in to fumigate and remove the carpets if i had kept them

only plebs brag about their wooden floor

I love IKEA. Other people think it's naff. I'll bet they have minging carpets in their bathroom and haven't washed their upholstery.

Boak.

ambarth · 14/03/2011 10:21

YANBU. It's practical and clean, especially if you have pets and kids.

ambarth · 14/03/2011 10:22

YANBU. Practical and clean.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 14/03/2011 10:28

YANBU. So much easier when potty training a child aswell.

Not so sure on leather sofa (regardless of colour!) Because I prefer something "warmer" But that's just my opinion I wouldnt judge anyone who did have a leather sofa.

BalloonSlayer · 14/03/2011 10:53

I think brown leather sofas look fab but can't have one as have veggie DH who disapproves.

olivertulliver · 14/03/2011 11:02

We have got 9 yr old laminate in kitchen, hall & dining room. Very naff but nice and clean.

Laminate nowadays is much nicer though & looks OK, imo.

porpoisefull · 14/03/2011 11:05

Yay for our laminate floors and their wipeability. Baby poo, vomit, milk, toddler food, mud - all wipe off!

MillsAndDoom · 14/03/2011 11:07

We've no floorboards just concrete and can't afford the lovely oak flooring that I would love to have.

Carpets can't be bleached clean, and aren't great for asthmatics, so laminate it is

valiumredhead · 14/03/2011 11:08

The laminate we have upstairs was more expensive than our oak flooring we have downstairs!

There's laminate and there's laminate Wink

Who cares anyway? You just have what you like in your house don't you? You don't need to justify it to anyone :)

Oh and for the record, next sofa WILL be leather as last one was a very expensive Tetrad non leather one and we've trashed it in less than 4 years Blush

lovecorrie · 14/03/2011 11:33

We bought our leather stuff, sofa, chair, footstool - from our socially spirally ex next door neighbours who moved - apparently the road was getting 'rough' Grin. It's gorgeous - brown, squashy and really comfy - and it was virtually brand new - as they didn't actually use it! None of yer dfs nonsense neither Wink

BettyCash · 14/03/2011 11:34

Laminate's a fucking nightmare

expatinscotland · 14/03/2011 11:41

Carpet's fucking minging.

Gottakeepchanging · 14/03/2011 11:44

Sorry laminate is naff. I would say it is just about allowable in small modern houses but looks awful and cheap in big rooms and period properties. It's a bit like stone cladding- it had it's time but it's gone. Just remember people ripped out period pieces and pine cladded everything- doesn't mean it was right. It is the lino equivalent of the noughties- it was trendy for those who couldn't afford real wood but there are better options.

Good quality hardwood like Bruce, fired earth or slate is the way forward. You can tell the difference.

ChristinaEliopolis · 14/03/2011 11:59

I have laminate all through downstairs and very pracical it is too. Today it is covered in sand, fur and seawater courtesy of my very mucky dog, plus mud tracked all over it(thanks, DH). In a mo, when I have stirred my backside to get off MN, I will have it hoovered and washed in five minutes. You couldn't do that with carpet.

I also have leather sofas - in cream AND brown, and couldn't care less if they are unfashionable. Who gets to decide this stuff anyway? I would hate to make anyone feel uncomfortable about their choice of home furnishing - now that would truly be naff.

I bloody love IKEA, too Grin

dementedma · 14/03/2011 12:49

we have some laminate, some carpets. laminate shows the dust like buggery when the sun shines on it, carpets harbour cat fleas!
Realise this is not giving a very good impression of my housekeeping Hmm

Not sure why the alternative to laminate is carpet? Wood is far nicer.

As for selling, If I viewed a house with laminate, I'd definitely be mentally bugeting to rip it up and put wood down.

It does seem to go hand in hand with the leather sofa (usually from DFS) and a ridiculous, enormous wide screan tv in a lounge that's too small to take it all.

But then whilst I may judge a house by it's flooring and sofa coverings, it wouldn't occur to me to judge the owner.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 14/03/2011 13:10

I have laminate and leather sofas and I love them so ner.

My parents have a very expensive wooden floor. We have a laminate that cost more than their wood floor. Their wood floor is scratched to buggery, my floor isn't and yet DD inhabits both.

Carpet is foul, would never go back to wall to wall carpets.

AuntiePickleBottom · 14/03/2011 13:11

i wish i had the money to rip up this carpet in the living room, no point atm as my landlord wants to put a new kitchen a bathroom :)
