they have been saying for game after game after game

he occasionally gets lucky and does something good

"what does johhny wilkinson earn

and what does wayne rooney earn"

As much as they can demand due to their respective market forces.
It's not due to some moral stance that Wilkinson earns around 1 million a year basic and Rooney earns around 8. It's because that's how much they can both demand in their chosen sport.
Rugby players earn as much as they can based on their skills, ditto footballers. The fact that one is worth more doesn't mean the other is somehow a better person.
The two sports are my favourite sports, the ridiculous stereotypes and partisan opinions of certain sections of supporters of each sports make me cringe.
Both sports have massive problems which need sorting out before they have any right to criticise any other sport.

You've pretty much described the 5 years of J Wilkinsons career which followed the world cup win. Also who cares if he's a dick in real life. Plenty of dick heads in all walks of life. Plenty of over-hyped rugby players with no morals as well.

LadyOfTheManor · 13/03/2011 16:29

Ahem- it does matter, and it is against Rugby law. Ireland should've won that match (and I live in Wales).

LadyOfTheManor · 13/03/2011 16:30

But I'm not Welsh, and hoping that Scotland lose today.

mayorquimby · 13/03/2011 16:30

we still probably would have lost, or at least coughed up 3 points off the line-out had it been taken legitmately.
More annyoing was Wallace cutting back inside in the last play rather than send Earls over in the corner.

LadyOfTheManor · 13/03/2011 16:31

The new ball should've been given to them where the ball went off, not 20 feet up the pitch.

mayorquimby · 13/03/2011 16:33

nah it went out on the full so it was taken from the right place, just with the wrong ball/illegitimately.

FromGirders · 13/03/2011 17:19

We thought so too trin - briefly.
Ho hum, should be used to it by now.

ifancyashandy · 13/03/2011 17:32

Feckin' matters HUGELY.

Play by the rules or don't play at all.

Robbed, I tells ya. Angry.

UnquietDad · 13/03/2011 17:33

Errrrr...

What happened here? Did somebody try and play rugby with a football? Confused

Ireland were robbed!

Kewcumber · 13/03/2011 19:35

well it matters because thems the rules. But if the ref didn't think so then thats OK - game continues.

Ireland could have won at various points if they had been good enough and they didn't. So poor decision or not, pointless blaming a lost match on 10 seconds of the opposition/ref getting something wrong when you couldn't make it count in the other 79mins and 50 seconds.

And you don't whine in rugby.

(Can you tell I'm welsh?)

dementedma · 13/03/2011 19:41

johnny wilkinson is GOD! emoticon.
those thighs....swoon

Did anyone on this thread watch the Women's 6 Nations match this afternoon? England v Scotland after the Calcutta cup match at Twickenham?

England won 89-0. That's a point scoring rate of just over a point a minute!! And it was a great match to watch too - lots of very technical rugby, and lots of running - amazing!

Oh - and the Welsh player was definitely trying it on with that quick put-in when the ball went out. I suppose he thought he had nothing to lose - if caught out he could say it was a mistake, and if not, he had a chance for a try - and he got it.

And I think I want to dream about Ritchie Grey or Jonny Wilkinson tonight, please! Or perhaps both ......

mayorquimby · 13/03/2011 19:53

well the welsh couldn't make it count in the other 79 minuted 50 seconds either.
They had to rely on their dirty cynical cheating ways in those 10 seconds to steal a win from the valiant Irish.

not read the whole thread but am reminded of something a friend told me. He ds and his friend both 3 were sitting in the back of her car playing with imaginary toys. I can't remember what they were supposed to be. Anyway, after some time, they started to squabble as one of them wanted to play with what the other had and they wouldn't let them My friend tried to explain that they could 'play' with whatever they wanted but they didn't 'get it' and it ended in tears. Quite hilarious Grin

Apparently it matters because rule 19 says that you cannot take a quick throw-in if someone off the pitch (official/ball boy/spectator etc) has touched the ball. I assume this is because a quick throw-in doesn't allow time for an official or player to ensure that the ball hasn't been tampered with.
