For the following status:

'Work longer and higher contributions to pensions!!.... a wage freeze!!... Boo Hoo Public sector... join the real world, even with the cuts you're still better off than the majority us in the private sector and we're the one's paying for it!'

I don't work in the public sector but I don't think that people who do aren't in the 'real world'. I was under the impression that public sector provide valuable services and aren't acknowledged enough. It can't get much real than some public sector jobs, can it?

AIBU to remove this person?

Yanbu.

wannaBe · 11/03/2011 09:41

well, I do think that many public sector workers aren't in the real world.

But it's just facebook, really.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 11/03/2011 09:43

delete.

gorionine · 11/03/2011 09:45

YABU, I desagree with the staus content BTW, unless you only want people of the same opinion as yourself on your FB.

I think this status is like someone ranting on AIBU, you might not necessarely agree with them but they can still rant.

nectarina · 11/03/2011 09:45

YANBU, delete them.

pallymama · 11/03/2011 09:46

YANBU. If I were in your shoes I'd have to remove them to avoid the temptation of getting into an arguement on facebook! Oh the shame! BlushGrin

Vicky2011 · 11/03/2011 09:47

What do you know about this person? If they are a well-paid "wanker-banker" type I would probably put a sarcy comment on there and try to embarrass them to their friends if they are likely to be struggling themselves at the moment I would probably take it in that context and ignore. I speak as someone who does think the public sector has got too big but taking pleasure in other people's jobs, wages and pensions being cut, well that just makes them an arse!

Greenshadow · 11/03/2011 09:50

Oh honestly!
I am a public sector worker and always have been, but I'd hardly delete a friend just for expressing an opinion.
Do you expect all your friends to have the same opinions as you?

Pagwatch · 11/03/2011 09:54

Is it a really, really difficult decision?

I would remove people if I objected to their views. Do you not know if you object or not?

KarenWalker · 11/03/2011 09:55

Okay maybe AIBU to delete on the grounds of a differing opinion, but not to disagree then. I don't expect everyone to have the same opinion as me, but I am being judgey about her taking pleasure in other's misfortune.

If you think it is an easy ride being a public sector worker, then you are free to become one you know!

Deciduousblonde · 11/03/2011 10:05

If it's someone you have as a friend because they are an actual friend then why delete? it's only an opinion. I have a few friends who certainly don't share the same opinons as me regarding vaccinations, politics and/or religion..but heck, it's their life and their own opinon to share.

If, however, you only have this person on your facebook so you have an extra neighbour on Farmville/Mafia Wars/some other crappy Zynga game then go ahead and get rid Grin

hairylights · 11/03/2011 10:13

Yabu. I feel the public sector has had it way too good for a long time and now that there need to be cuts it must not be excluded.

I would far prefer it if the banks came into line with the rest of us though.

I work in the third sector, for a charitable
organisation, which benefits impoverished communities.

crystalglasses · 11/03/2011 10:22

YANBU. Public sector workers as a group are the target of a lot of venom but the majority are very low paid. When I worked in the public sector, helping, (and worrying about) people in horrendous circumstances I was regularly the butt of sarcastic and judgemental comments from both service users and so-called friends alike, about what a cushy job I had, how well paid it must be and what a great pension I would be getting, paid for by them. I was glad to get out of it. I will get a small pension but nothing remotely like the figures quoted.

PepsiPopcorn · 11/03/2011 11:31

YABU. It's a narrow-minded world when we can only friends with people with the same opinions as ourselves.

expatinscotland · 11/03/2011 12:23

It's not realistic for people to expect to retire at 55, live to 85+ or more and collect final salary for 30-odd years.

That's just not sustainable for any society.

It doesn't sit well, but that's reality and all people had better get used to it, because our children aren't going to be able to afford these kinds of pensions.

I have a number of friends on FB whom I know have very different opinions from mine.

It'd be rather narrow-minded of me to delete them solely because we disagree on some things.

But if you feel it's grounds for deleting then go ahead.

expatinscotland · 11/03/2011 12:24

'Public sector workers as a group are the target of a lot of venom but the majority are very low paid'

The majority of private sector works aren't exactly high-paid, either.

Rannaldini · 11/03/2011 12:25

if i had facebook i might add them

It's facebook, if you don't like it then there's a comments box for you to say so. what's the worst that can happen? they delete you!

Why just delete them without challenging them?

worraliberty · 11/03/2011 12:42

I don't know. Do you remove every person from your FB if you disagree with them? If so then I suppose YANBU but if not then errr you are.

I don't see how their pensions can be cut...it's part of what they signed up for when they got the job..
Some/most of them will have stayed in those jobs all their lives because of the pension at the end.

If the pensions hadn't been there then many may well have changed jobs for a better paid one and taken out private pensions.

Yes,change the new contracts but not the existing ones.
And i wouldn't remove someone unless their views were offensive ie racist/homophobic etc.
