For the following status:

'Work longer and higher contributions to pensions!!.... a wage freeze!!... Boo Hoo Public sector... join the real world, even with the cuts you're still better off than the majority us in the private sector and we're the one's paying for it!'

I don't work in the public sector but I don't think that people who do aren't in the 'real world'. I was under the impression that public sector provide valuable services and aren't acknowledged enough. It can't get much real than some public sector jobs, can it?

AIBU to remove this person?

YABU - I havent had a pay rise for 2 years so in effect have had a pay cut when you factor in the cost of living increases.

And I'll have to work until whatever the age of retirement will be at that time, and probably beyond.

Everyone is going to have to suffer because of the recession unfortunatly, why should public sector workers be any different?

NorthernGobshite · 11/03/2011 18:00

YANBU.

And as a very hard working public sector worker I am offended by suggestions we have it easy.

Delete. But tell them why.

ladysybil · 11/03/2011 18:03

yabu to defriend a person because you dont share their opinoins

Devilforasideboard · 11/03/2011 18:14

I'd be sorely tempted to pull them up on the misplaced apostrophe at the very least....

pigletmania · 11/03/2011 18:23

YABU just because you share different view you should delete her from your FB friends, if I did that I would loose most of my friends on there. Yes a lot of people in the public sector are poorly paid: care workers, admin staff, domestic staff, but there are those highter up in the echelons that are getting paid far too much for doing very little, and all those PC type non jobs. One advert for a vacancy sticks in my mind from the local rag, a five a day officer wtf!!!!

NinkyNonker · 11/03/2011 19:38

Public sector workers shouldn't be any different. Absolutely. They deserve as much sympathy as a private sector worker would get in the same circumstances...not this disgusting crowing with glee that seems to be happening. All of these horrible overpaid public sector workers (I'm talking to you teachers, nurses etc) are obviously sub human and personally responsible for the downfall of the country if the reaction of some dimwits (ie Facebook peeaon) is anything to go by.

noodle69 · 11/03/2011 19:57

'yes a lot of people in the public sector are poorly paid: care workers, admin staff, domestic staff,'

These jobs are all poorly paid in the public sector but you earn even less and have less benefits if they are in the private sector for the same job unfortunately.

nzshar · 11/03/2011 20:05

It's facebook, people give their opinions, just because it isn't the same as yours then you want to delete. Damn glad that people have different opinions in life or it would be a mad mad world. YABU

LittleMissHissyFit · 11/03/2011 20:18

Public sector workers mostly get paid much less than they would working in the private sector.

It is because of this that they were traditionally promised much greater benefits, as a pay off for not having the bigger bucks year on year.

That said, savings have to be made somewhere, and the pensions for public sector workers are unsustainable.

noodle69 · 11/03/2011 20:19

In my job we get paid £6 an hour but people in my building doing exactly the same job get paid 16k if they are public sector.

NinkyNonker · 11/03/2011 20:20

On the whole the public sector workers I have spoken to agree with that, difficulty is that they went into their jobs being promised one thing and now the majority of the country seems to be crowing at the fact that their promised benefits will be taken away. The change of the conditions is one thing, but the glee with which some people have received the news seems unfair.

NinkyNonker · 11/03/2011 20:21

But that isn't the workers' faults Noodle, so people being gleeful about them getting their 'comeuppance' is unfair, do you see what I mean?

noodle69 · 11/03/2011 20:26

I am not saying its the workers fault I just think if you are at the 'lower end' jobs then you are on a much better deal in the public sector. Everyone I know knows that. Its what my mum and dad always told me growing up that I would never have a decent way of life without a public sector job as you wont get a decent pension or pay rises and I do believe it to be a big thing in some areas.

I dont agree with the way the person wrote it on facebook but I think people who are in public sectors generally know they are on to a good deal.

Again though I think we are talking about different ends of the spectrum.
