to disagree with dh who thinks calling a product for thick curly hair 'R & B' is racist

'Lush' have a conditioning product targeted at those with afro hair that I was thinking of trying out on dd's mixed race hair, as it gets so dry. When I told dh (black)the product's name, R & B, he became incensed and duly informed me he'd chuck it out if I ever bought it! He's of the opinion the name and association of R & B music with afro hair's racist and stereotypical. I'd actually really like to try it out on her hair, and not sure if I agree with him, athough I do understand his sensitivity.

What do you think?

I'm confused too, BuzzLiteBeer. I thought racism was discrimination based on "race" (bit dubious about the word race, only one species involved! Grin) I don't see anything derogatory about the product or it's name. Are we not allowed to mention anything cultural unless it's our own culture?

VajazzHands · 11/03/2011 07:21

It's LUSH it needs a ridiculous name to warrant its ridiculous price tag and used R&B to sounds young and hip.... The way suits in big companies try and be hip. If you had a jar of something called "pop princess" for girls with blond hair would that also be racist? I woudln't think so.

Anyway YABU for spending loads of money on a kids hair! Grin

I've got extraordinarily thick curly hair (as has one of my kids) and I don't give a damn what a product is called if it actually does something with my mop.

Coming To America truly is a great film, though surely full of the laziest stereotypes ever ?
Agree that R and B just fits the 'Dumbe Blonde' mould of mild stereotyping.
Anyway surely tight curly hair is found on many people of all origins, including (dare I say),many red headed people! Who did not,as far as I know, invent R and B. But if lush called a product a culturally gingeresque name such as 'pre-raphealite' it wouldn't be offensive?

Dumbe Blonde?? eh?

He is over reacting
