to think that free means free?

Ok I know that 'there's no such thing as a free lunch' but when my mobile phone provider offered a present for topping-up I made a mistake in following it up. Free nuts were apparently going to be sent. (Though I would definately prefer cheaper calls...) I signed up and even though the company asked for my bank details, it also reassured me that I could cancel after the first free box. So I did. They then said the second one would be half price... So I let the 'subscription' run for a week. Of course I have been charged for both and when I e-mailed to let them know, unsurprisingly they told me that a weekly delivery was what I'd requested.

I am just so cross that everything seems to be a con. AIBU?

Nuts?

RustyRainbow · 09/03/2011 12:57

Yes Chil1234, i think she might be...

shmoz · 09/03/2011 13:01

Oh I hate it when 'free nuts' turn out not to be free after all...Angry

Hammy02 · 09/03/2011 13:04

I don't understand the OP. You changed your mobile phone tarif on the understanding you would get free nuts?

leroymerlin · 09/03/2011 13:05

Never been more bespoke nuts in my life Grin

Free is never free if it involves handing your bank details over.

DramaInPyjamas · 09/03/2011 13:07

The things you do for nuts, eh?

ExitPursuedByABear · 09/03/2011 13:08

Nuts? Edible nuts? How many?

nomoreheels · 09/03/2011 13:09

Are these the Graze boxes? I think you can sign up for a "free" one anyhow. But any scheme that requires you to hand over your bank details and then cancel even for the freebie is likely to be a pain.

comewhinewithme · 09/03/2011 13:10

Graze box, I bet. They did the same to my FIL.

MySweetPrince · 09/03/2011 13:14

Graze box? I had the option from my phone provider for this "freebie" too..once I saw that they needed my bank details I decided not to bother...were the nuts nice anyway?

ExitPursuedByABear · 09/03/2011 13:15

There is another thread about Graze boxes and how many calories they contain.

Chil1234 · 09/03/2011 13:16

I guess that the moral of the story is that if you get offered peanuts, someone is making a monkey out of you...

CointreauVersial · 09/03/2011 13:17

Arf arf Chil1234!

leroymerlin · 09/03/2011 13:18

It was Graze, I didn't know if you were allowed to mention companies... I never usually give bank details but thought 'free nuts' that might be the real deal. Even the chou-chou man in France used to give out free nuts to tempt his customers.

OP posts:
wellwisher · 09/03/2011 13:22

Who is the chou-chou man and what is his trade, please? This thread is becoming increasingly surreal...

DramaInPyjamas · 09/03/2011 13:25

Also interested in the chou-chou mans nuts....

leroymerlin · 09/03/2011 13:40

Hammy02 No just a ten pound top-up on a phone - no contract but your credit runs out after a month. Don't even get me started on that one.

wellwisher and DramaInPyjamas The chou-chou man had sweet caramalised nuts that he used to place carefully next to you while you were sleeping off the excesses of the night before sunbathing.

OP posts:
wellwisher · 09/03/2011 13:47

Wow. I think I'd be quite shocked to wake up next to a man's nuts. Even if they were sweet and caramelised.

DramaInPyjamas · 09/03/2011 13:49

Meh, I prefer salty nuts myself

DramaInPyjamas · 09/03/2011 13:50
PurveyorOfWoo · 09/03/2011 13:51

LOL wellwisher

leroymerlin · 09/03/2011 14:07

At least they were free. Wink

HecateTheCrone · 09/03/2011 14:08

You only get free cheese in a mousetrap.

Nothing is ever free. - nothing 'given' by a company that is.

Once you understand that, you are less likely to be taken in. Grin

lubeybooby · 09/03/2011 14:11

In my experience graze makes everything very clear and is easy to cancel, you are not in any contract or anything and you can push your deliveries back, cancel altogether, log when you are away so you don't get them, etc etc. Very surprised you had a prob.

I love them and have a box a week. I have just cancelled a months worth though as cash too tight

Also seems very odd that was a perk with a phone, not much of a reward. Oh well
