A while back, I remember a thread on here about a tee shirt company flogging tee shirts which ridiculously offensive slogans.

Well, freedom of speech and each to their own and all that.

However, am I being unreasonable in still feeling unsettled by the following...a week ago at the bowling place in Milton Keynes, a bloke who looked -well- dodgey (aged 40-50), hanging around the arcade bit at the back with video games and gambling machines wearing a tee shirt with:
"Strangers have the best sweets"

I did not do anything at the time but now a week later I am still feeling uneasy.

Not sure if I am overreacting or if I should in fact have done something.

Done something?
What, about a man wearing a t shirt?
O yes, clearly a paedo. Deffo. Alert the police immediately.
Sheesh Hmm

ilovemyhens · 08/03/2011 13:30

That sounds pretty sick to me Sad

Not sure what you could have done about it though.

Greythorne · 08/03/2011 13:32

reality
pretty sure I did not suggest shooting him

Maybe the slogan refers to coach trips or cinema trips where, ime, strangers do always seem to have better sweets than me. And sandwiches.

chopchopbusybusy · 08/03/2011 13:32

I'd have found that quite offensive too, but not sure you can actually 'do' anything about it.

BaronessBomburst · 08/03/2011 13:33

But done what exactly?

Would it have appealed to children, or was it aimed at adults as some kind of pick-up line?

Mind you, at least T-shirts like that carry an implicit warning: "wearer is a nob'. Grin

Greythorne · 08/03/2011 13:33

I was totally at a loss as to what to do
hence my inaction

but it was vey odd

he did not look like a dad waiting for his kids to finish bowling

or a single bloke waiting for his friends come back from the bar

have you never had a very unsettling feeling about someone?

carminaburana · 08/03/2011 13:34

He probably thought you were weird for staring at him.

sorry, YABU

peeriebear · 08/03/2011 13:34

It's an adult joke for other adults. A child isn't going to run over to him and beg for his tasty sweets are they Confused I wouldn't have given it another thought tbh.

iwasyoungonce · 08/03/2011 13:35

"what to do" ??

Sorry, but what on earth do you mean? What exactly CAN one do about someone who is guilty of nothing more than a slightly dodgy T-shirt?

cumbria81 · 08/03/2011 13:36

you are completely overreacting. it's a tshirt.

Vallhala · 08/03/2011 13:36

The man wore a t-shirt FGS. he wasn't carrying a 12 bore!

It may have been a crappy and tasteless item of clothing, yes, but then that's my opinion of Boden too. You can't "act" on someone's shite taste in clothing!

DELHI · 08/03/2011 13:37

Agree you can't do anything much about him or his teeshirt, but if it's supposed to be an 'adult joke' it's in very poor taste and not remotely funny

I for one am sharpening my pitchfork. Does anyone have have anything flammable? And don't forget the bloody matches, it was so embarrassing last time having to borrow a lighter from the paedo.

Jacksmania · 08/03/2011 13:44

"It's an adult joke for other adults."

Because strangers luring children with sweets is funny? Hmm

Of course paedos don't advertise their proclivities on T-shirts. But I'd have some serious misgivings about anyone who thought a T-shirt like that was remotely funny. Seeing as he was a stranger, I really don't know what you could have done. But if I were going out with a group of friends and someone was wearing a shirt like that I'd have to say something, even if it made me look ridiculous.

daimbardiva · 08/03/2011 13:50

I agree it's in pretty bad taste, but I don't know what you could do about it, apart from confront him, which probably wouldn't achieve much

catwhiskers10 · 08/03/2011 13:51

If only that man knew that his choice of t-shirt was being discussed on MN. Lol!

mayorquimby · 08/03/2011 13:52

literally have no idea what the problem is here.

It's not an adult joke for adults. It's a thirteen year old's joke for offending parents. I would have been very Hmm to see a fifty year old man wearing one. Context counts, IMHO....

RitaMorgan · 08/03/2011 13:58

Do what exactly?

It was just a stupid joke t-shirt.

MissVerinder · 08/03/2011 14:01

YANBU. It's well tasteless. If it makes you uneasy- you're uneasy. I perhaps would have said something to him along the lines of "I think your t-shirt is fecking hilarious, I really do, but a group of mums in the toilets were talking about how much you creep them out. How oversensitive are they?" etc.
