To get my coil removed

Gemsy83 · 07/03/2011 22:28

My OH doesnt want anymore kids, ive had the coil for the last four years so have sorted the contraception out. I dont particularly want to fall pregnant but think he can show some responsibility for the contraception from now on (i.e put something on the end of it or have the snip). I feel its making me a lot moodier, a lot more lethargic, far less libido and given me a massive appetite for junk. AIBU or has anyone else had a similar experience?

I have a copper coil, the first few months I bled like a stuck pig and it got really bad cramps. After that my periods went back to normal and although I still get cramps on the first day, they're just normal ones.

I've had mine in for about 14 months now.

foreverondiet · 08/03/2011 23:05

I had a cap but I hated the having to run to bathroom to put it in. I read somewhere that if you put it in every night it doesn't act as a passion killer... Have a mirena now and it works for me.

zedfaca · 08/03/2011 23:26

I had a copper coil for three years. I had five days of heavy bleeding a month rather than my usual three light days.

nora12 · 08/03/2011 23:46

I have a mirena and it makes me feel terrible. (Bloated, enormous boobs, put on a stone in weight, moody, no sex drive - need I go on). Am now on my eighth medical appointment to try and get it removed (under GA now). I think I'm unusual though in that respect - sincerely hope so anyway. I wish I had stuck to condoms.

AtoZinAHurry · 09/03/2011 09:30

I have a copper coil too and I've used one since I met DH 16 years ago. I cannot use hormonal contraception, and I find the coil pretty straightforward. DH cannot have a vasectomy for medical reasons, and I got thrush a lot with the cap.

OTheHugeDaffodils · 09/03/2011 10:05

I found my periods were a bit heavier/more crampy for a few months after getting the coil, but it's settled down now and I can't see any difference any more. Or maybe I'm just used to it.

But in any case bleeding a bit more is, to me, a small price to pay for not having the horrible mood swings/bloating/loss of libido I've always had from hormonal contraception, or indeed the passionless hassle of barrier methods (condoms, cap etc).

NickNacks · 09/03/2011 10:10

I have the Implant (the new one) and so far so good. I always got really moody on the pill so was unsure at first but no problems for me.

maxpower · 09/03/2011 10:11

OP I think it's entirely reasonable for your DH to take the responsibility for a while. FWIW DH and I have always relied on condoms - in 15 years, only one broke and on that occasion I took the MAP. As long as you make sure you've got a good stock of them Wink I can't see condoms not working for you.

tyler80 · 09/03/2011 10:13

When I enquired about the cap I was told with perfect use they're only 95% effective, with typical use that drops that to 60% so it wasn't really recommended.

I can't use hormonal methods and I can't use the coil so condoms it is.

doireallywant3 · 09/03/2011 10:14

i had a copper coil and hated it. made my periods heavy and painful, couldn;t wait to have it out. i also tried depo whien i was younger.. made my periods light and less painful but had constant nausea and lost abotu a stone (wasn't complaining about that tho!)
what about the mini-pill?

HappySeven · 09/03/2011 10:41

I had a copper one put in a few months ago. I wanted to avoid hormones as I haven't dealt well with them in the past.

I've been really pleasantly surprised. I've never had particularly heavy periods so wasn't worried about that but they're not that much heavier. The pain did worry me as before children I would be on the strongest painkillers and would often vomit with the pain but they've not been painful at all.

Obviously this doesn't help the OP but I thought I'd add my tuppenceworth after parakeet asked.

GothAnneGeddes · 09/03/2011 11:04

I've been using a copper coil on and off for over 8 years. Slightly heavier periods, but no problems otherwise. Love it.

mippy · 09/03/2011 12:17

Depo made me put on a lot of weight and affected my moods badly.

MrsH75 · 09/03/2011 12:21

I might try the copper coil - I have barely there periods on the pill but (from what I remember) my periods weren't very heavy before.

Unwind · 09/03/2011 13:23

I think that the ring is a good alternative to the cap - same hormones as the combined pill, but in a much lower dose, because it they are released where they need to be. You need to replace it every month, but otherwise can use one all the time, have a week's break, and take it out for up to three hours.

StillSquiffy · 09/03/2011 13:28

Had a mirena removed and replaced with copper, so have gone from no periods to having periods heavier than have I ever had (but only really heavy for a couple of days a mth), and even after four years they are still more than I used to get. But even with this, I would never ever go back to any other kind of contraception.

MissVerinder · 09/03/2011 13:34

Ok, so, if you're having problems with mirena, the mini pill and depo will probably not suit you.

Hormonal contraception comes in varying ratios/types of hormones. However, the CAsH clinics and GP's will always make sure you're not at risk of a stroke and then put you on the cheapest one; Microgynon and Dianette being the favourites. There are soooo many different pills to try if you can be arsed with it, I would suggest Yasmin, as it seems to suit some of my ladies who have had previous problems with COCP. But I am not a doctor, so consult your family planning (jingle here).

Also, you should be able to get free condoms from CAsH (family planning) as well, because they're bliddy expensive!

ShowOfHands · 09/03/2011 13:41

My local surgery will no longer fit caps. And because they haven't done them for so long, they're no longer allowed. Catch 22.

I had a copper coil. Periods went from 4/5 days of medium flow to 11 days of bleeding like a stuck pig. I had 7 periods with it in before I had it taken out. I was quite anaemic by that point. It just didn't suit me. It hurt too so I think maybe it was poorly located and irritating my uterus lining.

boosmummie · 09/03/2011 13:45

@ Apocalypse I had my Mirena in for 12 years. Had it put in pretty much when they first came out. Didn't have a single period YAY. Had it removed, pregnant within 2 weeks. Didn't have any neg side effects myself, but I do know lots of people that have/had.

schroeder · 09/03/2011 13:48

Had a copper coil it made my periods very heavy and 10 days rather than ight and 4 days.
I also suffered from pms for the first time in my life.

When it was time to change it, I went for a mirina and haven't had more than a little spotting for years and no other side effects after the first few weeks.

It's so personal though, everyone seems to react differentlyConfused.

I know what you mean about resenting that it ends up as your job, but if he is not sure about having more children then you can't really expect him to have a vasectomy. And condoms are not very reliable ime.

schroeder · 09/03/2011 13:49

Light not 'ight' ffsSmile

NimpyWindowmash · 09/03/2011 21:38

I have the same issue as you OP. My DH was talking about getting the snip months ago, but when it comes down to it, he hasn't managed to get to the doctor to even discuss it. I kind of understand though so I don't want to nag him about it. I don't want to use condoms long term, so it's down to me to sort out contraception. I'm getting a copper coil because I love having a normal sex drive. I had Mirena before, and had painful ovarian cysts. I just hope the copper coil works out and I don't get these 11 day periods that other people talk about.

toeragsnotriches · 09/03/2011 21:44

First two periods on copper coil were awful then it settled down and it's slightly heavier than before but totally do able. BF found same. Mirena sent my mate loopy (tho unsure how as is so little hormone.)

Nagoo · 09/03/2011 21:44

I've got an appointment for a copper coil next week. Will it hurt getting it put in?

toeragsnotriches · 09/03/2011 21:44

Periods for me on copper coil are 5 days ish.
