i probably get through 2 bottle of bleach a week, in a 3 bed 3 person house

when i'm cleaning the bathrooms, i squirt bleach everywhere, of course around the toilets, but also around the shower and bath and sometimes sinks.

then a couple of hours later i rinse off,
i thinjk i ise about 2/3 litres of bleach a week

am i harming the planet or bu?

There are more earth friendly ways to clean your bathroom that wont pollute our waterways, but possibly require a little more effort on your behalf.

And your bathroom might actually be clean afterwards (unless you have missed out a vital part of your cleaning routine in your description)

YABU though its promising that you are seeking opinions!

carriedababi · 07/03/2011 19:43

tbh i think i'm cleaning them when they don't really need to be cleaned

yes, you are. bleach is incredibly bad for the environment.

2 bottles a week???????????

carriedababi · 07/03/2011 19:49

sometimes 3.

If you're just chucking bleach on then rinsing it off you're not actually cleaning anything you're just erm bleaching it aren't you?

So, as well as harming the environment, you're leaving the evil substances, minus their harmful bits I assume, but nevertheless effectively still there - the rinsing doesn't necessarily remove everything. HTH.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 07/03/2011 19:57

And doesn't it give you a stinking headache?

carriedababi · 07/03/2011 20:00

yes its stinking the place out.

well i do give it a wipe as well as a rinse

It must smell like a swimming pool :)

I use a squirt down the toilet once a day and some diluted to clean my horrible White sideboards in the kitchen the smell makes me heave sometimes.

GetOrfMoiLand · 07/03/2011 20:04

I only use bleach in the loo couple of times a week, and to clean the sink once a week.

Bottle of bleach lasts about 2 weeks I would say.

I would never use it anywhere else - use other cleaning products to clean the bath/tiles etc.

I don't see the point of using bleach anywhere else - it would ruin all my clothes for a start.

ongakgak · 07/03/2011 20:04

Oh dear, very inefficient cleaning.

get a cleaner in and tell them you will dock them if they use than more than one bottle of bleach ..... a month!

carriedababi · 07/03/2011 20:06

yes i don't like the smell, it does smell like a swimming pool!
there are three bloody toilets to clean though

Carrieda, I thought of you the other day when wandering through purgatory Debenhams - they had a display of cerise and lime cushions!

Re the bleach, yes I think that is a LOT of bleach. I am no saint environmentally, in fact I am crap at greenness, but that would freak me out a bit. Would worry about fume/chemical exposure to dc as well, although not sure of the facts surrounding that - it just sounds excessive.

carriedababi · 07/03/2011 20:10

welli ve actually honestly started to think it will be cheaper to get a cleaner in due to the amount of products i use.

we use a bottle every 2 or 3 months, i'm Shock at your usage. i only use it to get the toilet bowl clean if it's got really bad, other stuff can be done with a bit more elbow grease

funnily enough i find the best thing for cleaning the bathroom is a dab of washing up liquid - gets it really foamy, you just need a good scrubbing brush and some determination, will clean it much better than squirting around a bottle of bleach and leaving it to , erm, dry in a bit?

carriedababi · 07/03/2011 20:11

oh how funny tou should think of meSmile

was it a cat cushion you saw?

i'm STILL hinking of doing that cerise and lime thing...

bibbitybobbityhat · 07/03/2011 20:13

Of course you are harming the planet. How can you not know that?

I never use bleach and the smell does actually make me want to vomit.

When we were househunting we viewed a house where there was a strong smell of bleach in the kitchen and I just had to leave without looking round the rest of the house.

It is disgusting stuff.

oldraver · 07/03/2011 20:15

I couldn't stand the smell of that much bleach, I rarely use it. We live in quite a hard water area but never really feel the need to chuck loads of cleaning stuff down the loos unless scuzzy student son is home, and yes they are clean

I dont get the commercials that portray limescale encrusted loos that you need XYZ product on, mine never get that bad and I consider myself a slattern

PurveyorOfWoo · 07/03/2011 20:19

I use a bottle of bleach in maybe a YEAR!! (so am a bit shocked at your usage). I do use the limescale removing chemicals in the loo instead though, which are almost as bad as bleach, so add several bottles of those.

The only times I use bleach are to clean up/disinfect if someone has been sick, to whiten the kitchen sink or to do the odd bit of bleaching white clothes.

I'm probably a bit lentil weavery, so tend to use dilute white vinegar or at least Ecover/Method stuff for the other cleaning. And elbow grease of course. I'm also a fervent believer in a little bit of dirt being good for you Blush

No-one has died yet Grin

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 07/03/2011 20:39

How on earth do you breathe with that much bleach in the air?! Shock

Are you bleaching everything every day?
Do you worry a lot about germs?

JessRabbit · 07/03/2011 21:08

I use too much bleach because I like things to be sanitised not just physically clean but I have taken to using a disinfectant as a finishing wipe and saving bleach for the toilets.

I have no idea if it's better or worse for the environment but sanitisation is an important part of cleaning.

carriedababi · 07/03/2011 21:10

no i don't really worry too much about germs, well except the toilet

do you it harmful in the air?

OP posts:
carriedababi · 07/03/2011 21:11

think its

OP posts:
WhatsWrongWithYou · 07/03/2011 21:16

I don't think you can ever actually sanitize a batgroom completely, though - not to say you shouldn't bother cleaning it, but any bit of dampness is a place where bacteria will colonise - straight after you've cleaned it.
I'm a haphazard cleaner, but mine get the Flylady 'swish and swipe' a few times a week. Only use bleach occasionally in the loo, otherwise toilet duck. My bathrooms aren't permanently sparkling clean, but they're not minging and they're not a health hazard - which I'd consider yours to be, op, with all those fumes.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 07/03/2011 21:17

Er bathroom not batgroom Hmm.

JessRabbit · 07/03/2011 21:18

Oooh I like the sound of a BatGroom! I may retrain as one :o
