i probably get through 2 bottle of bleach a week, in a 3 bed 3 person house

when i'm cleaning the bathrooms, i squirt bleach everywhere, of course around the toilets, but also around the shower and bath and sometimes sinks.

then a couple of hours later i rinse off,
i thinjk i ise about 2/3 litres of bleach a week

am i harming the planet or bu?

I use bleach once a week in bathroom and kitchen, if that. But it's always best to actually scrub and wipe with it as opposed to just shoving it on there and leaving it...

YABU to use that much bleach and also to think that just slinging it around will actually clean your house.

Method Bowl Patrol down the loos daily and only buy a bottle a month per loo (they are sold in 1litre bottles and we have 4 loos). The remainder of the bathrooms get cleaned with Method sprays and scrubs. Bar Keepers Friend is also a total godsend and gets the kitchen sink whiter and better smelling than any amount of bleach.

The only time I ever use bleach is when I rinse out the bins a couple of times a week (we have a recycling bin with 3 sections and the food section gets minging) and to clean out the dog bath when she has rolled in fox poo.

And yes, it isn't great to be inhaling all that ammonia (or whatever the active ingredient of bleach is).

superv1xen · 07/03/2011 21:22

you're not in the midlands are you carried i have a cleaning business, i'll come and clean for you! :)

TattyDevine · 07/03/2011 21:24

Haha "active ingredient of bleach". Bleach is hydrogen peroxide H202.

Ammonia is a compound of Nitrogen and Hydrogen, NH3

Seriously though OP my hair has seen less bleach than your bathroom. You should cut down.

TattyDevine · 07/03/2011 21:26

Mumsnet, can we have superscript and subscript numbers for chemistry boffins? Grin

Tech · 07/03/2011 21:28

I think bleach is Sodium Hypochlorite NaClO and doesn't need any subscripts [boffin] Wink

JaxTellersOldLady · 07/03/2011 21:31

yes, you are harming the planet, yes you are using too much bleach.

Your lungs must be scarred!

I use bleach, down the loo, and for cleaning down the sink a couple of times a week. The rest is washing up liquid, bicarb or soda, method liquid which is great, especially their shower stuff.

TattyDevine · 07/03/2011 21:33

The one I use is just hydrogen peroxide, which I know is H202.

Though I think the hair sort (the blue powder) is calcium hypochlorite...

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 07/03/2011 21:36

With hypochlorite bleach, your swimming-pool pong is chlorine gas, I always find it irritates my lungs (but am asthmatic).

It's toxic in larger doses (that's why cleaning product instructions say not to mix different ones - in case you release a massive cloud of poisonous gas from your plughole!)

DaisySteiner · 07/03/2011 21:40

Hair bleach is usually hydrogen peroxide.

tulpe · 07/03/2011 21:47

:)

BeenBeta · 07/03/2011 21:59

Two bottles a week is far too much.

Jut use it down the loo. I'd say we use 1 bottle every 3 weeks in a 4 person house.

cumfy · 07/03/2011 22:18

OP do your eyes sting ?

carriedababi · 07/03/2011 22:53

eyes don't sting but i'm worried about the affects in the air

OP posts:
LoopyLoopsHulaHoops · 07/03/2011 22:59

Seriously? Yes, you are harming the environment, you are probably harming your family, and you are wasting your time, as your bathroom won't be clean.

Rosmarin · 08/03/2011 00:14

In my experience eco products work very well - such as ecover. You are doing damage with that much bleach. You don't need to use so much - just some more elbow grease and you'll be doing a better job!

Please please cut down the usage!
Best of luck...

CointreauVersial · 08/03/2011 00:25

I was told never to use bleach down a toilet as it perishes the rubber seals on the trap, so I stopped.

My bleach bottle is now covered in dust as it didn't have another purpose in life. Sad

Clary · 08/03/2011 00:31

Oh man that's a lot of bleach.

I don't really use it tbh (I think we have a bottle somewhere for occasional use on a white shirt). I always think that I want to clean off the dirt, not just dye it a different colour.

So yes, I would resort to hot soapy water or somesuch. Liking the sound o fthese Method products

oldraver · 08/03/2011 01:14

What is this Barkeepers Friend ? I have a beige sink that I can no longer get clean since Cif stopped doing their cleaner with bleach. I only needed to use a little but nothing else works (maybe Cif have decided to save the planet)

Rosmarin.. I do use a little Ecover/own brand loo cleaner if I have to and one of the reasons I like it as they have virtually no smell and NO colour

patiencenotmyvirtue · 08/03/2011 06:41

Latecomer to this thread.

I like batgroom.

Oh, and Op, that's WAAAAY too much bleach.

carriedababi · 08/03/2011 09:43

ok, in light of your views, i will change my ways

so ecover is a good one to try then?

OP posts:
thetideishigh · 08/03/2011 09:54

It does seem a lazy way to try and ensure cleanliness. Chuck it down and rinse it off.

I think a bit of elbow grease and a cleaning product that is less harmful to the environment would be as effective but it would take more effort on your part.

We live in a very hard water area and my main problem is limescale removal to give the nasties less to cling on to.

CakeandRoses · 08/03/2011 09:55

ah, i love how MN can change people's ways for the better Smile

My main concern would be for your/your DC's health. I really try to limit use of 'chemicals' round the house for that reason.

I've found a good green make which is much cheaper than Ecover (and waaay cheaper than Method) called Greenforce, you can get it in Wilkos.

And white vinegar is brilliant stuff - really effective on limescale.

Confession: i'm semi lentil-weavery but not perfectly green. I/the cleaner still use bleach down the loo now and again and on the belfast sink in kitchen as it's virtually impossible to clean otherwise.

bupcakesandcunting · 08/03/2011 10:10

YABU your own piss is sterile and free.

Do pull your finger out.
