AIBU?

to not find the Charlie Sheen frenzy at all funny

I feel sorry for him. He seems to be incredibly ill.

But people seem to think it is a laugh a minute. Listening to Jo Whiley yesterady and she was talking about how funny his latest broadcast was. I watched a bit of his interview last week, and he looked off his rocker, all twitchy and manic.

I am NO fan of him whatsoever, but I think it is reprehensible that someone completely breaking down like this is viewed as entertainment.

I have to admit I don't know much about it, hardly watch/read news ATM. But YANBU.

I overheard some middle aged women chatting about how they've started following him on twitter and how funny it was.

They should be fucking ashamed Angry :(

I am (obviously, seeing as I'm an MNer) not opposed to Internet in general but my god it can be harmful, it really facilitates this sort of sick voyeurism.

Have read thread now, I didn't even know about his history - doesn't change the fact the voyeurism is wrong though, IMO. Mind you I'm not a fan of the celebrity culture in any way.

You are all assuming he's not enjoying blasting himself into another dimension with drugs.
I don't feel bad about reading about him. He's enjoying the ride. He's also loving all the attention that goes along with it. He knows exactly what he's doing, he's not a victim.
Depends how you view 'mental illness' as well. He's certainly deviating from the norm, and consciously so.

I totally agree, my mother works in mental health and he is showing signs of what very serious drug abuse can do to you.

Its as if he is half here and half not. DP thinks its funny but only because he doesn't think he is unwell, he thinks that he is just an exagerated celebrity character. I think it is very sad, I see a Britney Spears type breakdown coming on and feel sad for his LO's.

You can be a complete bastard and still get ill though

This isn't a debate about whether CS is an arsehole or not (he evidently is)

It's about how ghoulish and distasteful it is to mock and laugh and be entertained by someone's illness. Would we be mocking him in the same way if he was dying of cancer? Or is addiction/mental illness fair game?

I heard this morning he's just been fired - from the highest paid role on USA TV (so probably highest paid TV star in the world).

I think he's an out of control ego maniac who has been indulged for way way too long by everyone. Quick flick through his catalogue of offences against his girlfriends/wives is horrendous. He's an addict yes, but at the end of the day the addiction is his choice - I'm sure he's had ample 'wake up' calls over the years to sort himself out. Yet still he is propelled into being the highest paid TV star. Bet he thinks he can do what ever he wants, to whomever he wants and get away with it.

I'm not entirely without a certain amount of sympathy/empathy for addicts, but I'm finding it hard to feel sympathy for this man. Not that I find the situation funny.

I know it shouldn't be about whether or not CS is an arsehole, but because he is, I have to say I find the baying press pack less distasteful then I did when Britney Spears was losing it. I thought that was genuinely vile.

He is an asshole.

And he is quite obviously ill. In one way or another, Whether that's through addiction or mental health issues or a combination of both.

Quite tempted to email ustream to ask them to remove his 'stream' for his own good

it is quite disturbing how people can see someones very public breakdown as entertainment , it happened with mariah carey britney spears and lindsey lohan now charlie sheen. The people who see this kind of thing as entertainment should remember but for the grace of god there go i.

It's not funny or watch able.

I watched a couple of his videos from Ustream today to see what the press were on about.

He is clearly on drugs and being goaded by close 'friends' to carry on with this fucked up charade.

I'm shocked at all the celebrity response to his twitter feed, shows you how fucked up it all is now though.

It won't end up well and I wonder what all the slebs and twatter followers will say then,it's vile imo.

I do wonder whether he is on on drugs. Or is having mental health issues. Or a combination of both

Even so. I find it very sad that no one is assuming a duty of care for him, and steering him away from such public and long lasting statements

He's an asshole, and he's not funny.

Oh, and I don't know if it's been covered or not but Emilio Estevez is his full brother, not half. Not that it matters! :)

I think he is having some mental breakdown they have actually done a blood and urine test and he was actually clean of all drugs including alcohol which means because he is not on drugs his behaviour is just that much worse.

I think he suffers from Narcissism.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders fourth edition, DSM IV-TR, a widely used manual for diagnosing mental disorders, defines narcissistic personality disorder (in Axis II Cluster B) as:[1]
A pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following:
Has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements)
Is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love
Believes that he or she is "special" and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions)
Requires excessive admiration
Has a sense of entitlement, i.e., unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations
Is interpersonally exploitative, i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends
Lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others
Is often envious of others or believes others are envious of him or her
Shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes
It is also a requirement of DSM-IV that a diagnosis of any specific personality disorder also satisfies a set of general personality disorder criteria.

It is pretty sad though to see this happening, but by watching it you are enabling the media that keeps bringing it to you to watch.

Having grown up with an abusive step father, which almost ruined my life - no I feel hard to feel sorry for him
