Meat is a mug's game.
We veggies are laughing all the way to the bank.

worraliberty · 06/03/2011 18:32

I bought a beautiful joint of silverside today from Morrisons for £6.20 to feed 5 of us. It wasn't even on special either.

Ambi · 06/03/2011 18:36

If you live in the North West, I'd recommend Meat Mart, a butchers / cash and carry.

reelingintheyears · 06/03/2011 18:39

South West here...

I love Morrisons when i go to my Mum's....

Get a slow cooker and buy brisket or pot roast joints of beef. They cost a lot less and taste a million times nicer, the gravy they make is out of this world too especially if you add a bit of red wine when you put it on to cook :)

reelingintheyears · 06/03/2011 18:44

Yep..Bogeyface,i'm going to have to rethink my cooking...

It nearly drove me mad looking at the prices....

I believe a new knee costs a good few thousand.

reelingintheyears · 06/03/2011 18:48

Not on the NHS....

Tesco have a lot of half price offers on the deli counter they run from wednesdays and last for about 3 weeks.

I have bought a lovely joint of pork half price last week, fed 5 of us VERY generously and still have enough left for sandwiches, under £6.00 it was.

The kids even commented on how nice it was and they don't compliment any food Wink

I actually think YABU.

The amount of time, work, fuel, water, grain and the rest that goes into producing meat is pretty massive. For example, something like 2,500 gallons of water are used to produce 1lb of meat.

So it should be expensive really.

reelingintheyears · 06/03/2011 18:55

We had pork last week....

I wanted to get Lamb but it was just too expensive...
Beef was cheaper.....
And i ALWAYS think Beef should be the dearest.

slipshodsibyl · 06/03/2011 18:57

Queen is correct. And if it's cheap, (I mean cheap rather than being a cheap cut)there is a reason.

reelingintheyears · 06/03/2011 18:58

I don't rigidly meal plan....but do like to have a roast on Sunday,
Especially if the older DC are here.

I was just Shock at the price.

runnermum2 · 06/03/2011 19:04

The problem queen is that the farmer gets next to nothing of the cost of the joint - it's all profit in Mr Tesco's pocket which seems unfair

TorcherQueenie · 06/03/2011 19:04

Shoulder of pork was in offer in Tesco a couple of weeks back £3 a KG got a KG of that, Have Brisket of beef fron it being reduced for quick sale. Why not have lamb chops for your roast? Or even Shanks.

desperatelyseekingsnoozes · 06/03/2011 19:06

I agree with queenoflippingeverything, you are eating something that was once as life, it should not be cheap.

allsquareknickersnofurcoat · 06/03/2011 19:09

I've nearly halved my food bill by going veggie...

Lilyloo · 06/03/2011 19:15

Agree about doing a cheaper cut such as brisket etc in slow cooker , at least half price of silverside and much nicer with richer gravy

ilovemyhens · 06/03/2011 19:23

The cheaper cuts also have more flavour Grin

We can't afford to buy proper joints anymore, but we get some nice stuff at the butchers and just make it into casseroles and stews, curries etc.

reelingintheyears · 06/03/2011 19:45

Lamb chops???

They are well out of my price range unless they're in the reduced section!!!

AnnieLobeseder · 06/03/2011 19:47

Aw, I thought you did mean that type of joint! And all that's being discussed is meat! Very disappointing, especially for a vegetarian former pothead.... Sad

dementedma · 06/03/2011 20:01

fish also horribly expensive. can't remember last time i bought it!

FabbyChic · 06/03/2011 20:05

Have chicken, bought one for £4 to feed two and a dog there was loads of it.

DillyDaydreaming · 06/03/2011 20:05

I've virtually stopped buying meat - fish is even more pricy.
Nowt wrong with egg on toast and baked beans. DS thinks I am the best cook in the world.Grin
