Yeah - chicken is generally cheapest. I do roast one day, chicken risotto (or something with chicken) another day and then make soup/stock. Best buy for meat tbh.

flippinggorgeous · 06/03/2011 20:07

I tend to buy my meat at Co-op, they usually have good deals. Or I buy it when reduced and freeze it. Food is just so expensive but we have to eat and I want to feed my kids well. Thank goodness they like stews and soups, it really helps cut costs.

Northernlurker · 06/03/2011 20:08

Todays silverside from the farmshop cost £9.50 has fed all of us with enough for curry tomorrow.

redpanda13 · 06/03/2011 20:11

Ooops I also thought of another kind of joint. Not bought that sort of thing in about 15 years. Wonder if the price has changed much? Blush

Madmartigan · 06/03/2011 20:12

DH buys whole chicken, I buy chicken legs, much cheaper and sufficient with nice roast veg. I am irked by the whole chicken buying, we don't need to be stuffed at the end of the meal. We've cut back on meat and fish.

Bogeyface · 06/03/2011 20:27

Thats a good point about the co-op, they do have some really good deals, definetely worth having a butchers (ho ho)! :o

Georgimama · 06/03/2011 20:30

Rubbish, intensively farmed, water injected chicken is cheap. Good chicken is not.

figcake · 06/03/2011 20:39

My DDs friend's mum tells me that halal meat is much cheaper Smile

fitflopqueen · 06/03/2011 20:40

find your local butcher, much better quality, usually know where it was produced, if more expensive, eat less often.

molemesseskilledIpom · 06/03/2011 21:48

I nabbed a 2 kg joint of beef from the co-op for £3.50. It's in the freezer now along with the leg of lamb that was £6.00 and a bacon joint which was £2.00.

I NEVER buy meat at full price, always in the reduced section on a saturday. Saves me a small fortune.

QueeferSutherland · 06/03/2011 21:57

Soooo...

How much does a reefer cost these days?

'Twas £15 for an 1/8th when I were a gal, but the price dropped to a tenner by the time I stopped.

But yes, meat v expensive. Even bacon is £££. My DH orders it wholesale through his work.

fivegomadinthelambingshed · 06/03/2011 21:59

YABU and that is why so many farmers are going out of business.

worraliberty · 06/03/2011 22:01

I can't live without bacon. I don't care how expensive it is..I'll sell my children to fund my bacon habit.

sourdoughface · 06/03/2011 22:02

you have to have meat on sunday, its the law

oiwhatsoccuring · 06/03/2011 22:04

I bought some meat from the butchers counter at Sainsburys today.
Guess how much a 2kg leg of lamb was ?

THIRTY THREE POUNDS.
[SHOCK]

Honeydragon · 06/03/2011 22:05

Queefer

So say prices continued to drop, you get an 1/8th for a fiver, get caned, get the munchies and eat whatever crap you have in the house, even the weird shit you've won at the school fair.

Now that's costcutting with a bargain joint Grin

worraliberty · 06/03/2011 22:07

I'd say it's likely to turn a few families veggie, but probably for the majority they'll just end up buying the cheaper meat at a cost to the animal's welfare.

I know I don't give it as much thought as I used to. I even buy 15 eggs for £1.50 now whereas there was a time I could afford to think about the poor hens.

worraliberty · 06/03/2011 22:08

(crying laughing at Honey) Grin

CarGirl · 06/03/2011 22:08

I know the cost of buying a diease free ferret Wink you couldn't afford to eat them at all!

Danthe4th · 06/03/2011 22:09

Bought 2 1.1kg gammon joints at the coop for £5 each as the ham was double that, also buy my fish at m and s now as they had plaice and haddock 4 peices for £6 that was 2 double packs, also buy my mince there now as it has less fat and costs less for a double pack, they had chickens for £5 to include a free apple pie.
I've spent the weekend looking at things we can cut back on but when I make a saving I just seem to get something else instead.

sourdoughface · 06/03/2011 22:09

id never go veggie, i dont want to be all pale and humourless LOL

TottWriter · 06/03/2011 22:12

We get cheaper cuts/mince and DP works his culinary magic turning it into curries, stews, etc. A whole chicken is fab value as the leftovers can go in sandwiches or a curry, and the carcass goes to stock for gravy or soup, or the base for a casserole.

We also have a lot of veggie meals - they are really tasty, and just as filling. Don't have to eat meat every day, and then when you do have it you can but better. We are also planning to switch out supermarket meat for our local butcher's. It's only fair to try and support the local producers. We've been bad so far but are getting better.

lol @ sourdoughface....

bellavita · 06/03/2011 22:20

We spend a flipping fortune on meat.

Last week I decided that at least once a week we would have one meat free meal and I made spicy lentil and sweet potato stew. It was lovely and fed four of us.
