Please tell me I'm not alone here...

£4000 for a family of four to holiday in a self catering studion in Tenerbloodyrife!

I don't even want to go to Tenerife, but my expectations are getting lower... started off looking at villas in Sardinia but knocked sideways at the price. Now looking at anything... ANYTHING! that will ensure a reasonable standard of accommodation outside of the UK during July/August but cannot believe the price!

I know I must sound naive, but I really didn't think it would be this much. I was think a couple of thousand would be enough...

I know I may also sound a little self-entitled, but we have DONE camping and holidays in the UK for the last six years, and I thought that now I'm working again, and dh and I are on a combined salary of roughly 60k, and our mortgage isn't too much, that we would finally be able to afford something this year!

So AIBU to think that families who do manage to stump up the extortionate prices for a couple of weeks in the sun are a) loaded b) being ripped off or c) both?

Any advice as to reasonably priced holidays also welcomed... I know this isn't the travel section but I'm suddenly feeling too poor to rub shoulders with the travel lot! Grin

It is amazing - we live in Surrey and DS2 announced to me after half term that 25 kids in his class had been abroad at half term Shock

Not sure that I totally believe him but I am under pressure from my kids to take them abroad.

BuzzLiteBeer · 06/03/2011 16:03

Keycamp, Eurocamp etc. Mobile homes but much cheaper.

ladydeedy · 06/03/2011 16:03

rent somewhere direct from owners via holiday-rentals.com or holidaylettings.co.uk in portugal - villa or apartment. flights with easyjet - job done and cheap to eat/drink when you are there too... good luck.

worraliberty · 06/03/2011 16:03

Perhaps they just save up for longer?

Catnao · 06/03/2011 16:05

We haven't left the UK for a decade - it's ridiculous how expensive it is (esp if you factor in expired passports!)

stoppinchingthedummy · 06/03/2011 16:05

No yanbu it is a total rip off!!No wonder people take their children out of school for foreign hols i know i will be if we can ever afford it!!!

Often if you do a holiday yourself you can get it a little cheaper, online flights through flight checker and villa's or holiday homes that are rented out. I have a friend who has a three bedroom appartment in tenerife that she rents for about £400 a week which is quite reasonable imo .

stoatie · 06/03/2011 16:05

Turkey tends to be a bit cheaper

TheDogsBollocks · 06/03/2011 16:05

i bet they are not all going in villas or the best hotels etc. you can holiday for much less than that if you look around.

AnnoyingOrange · 06/03/2011 16:06

it's much cheaper to book flights with a low cost airline like easyjet and source your own accommodation

ExitPursuedByABear · 06/03/2011 16:07

Try Cuba - we went last year and it was very cheap - all inclusive. Long flight (10 hours), very hot, but good hotel.

lenak · 06/03/2011 16:07

You're just looking in the wrong places

2 weeks self catering in Tenerife for 2 adults and 2 kids in August from £288 per person Wink

TheBolter · 06/03/2011 16:08

But even if I saved up, which is perfectly feasible... somehow I would feel unjustified spending so much on a holiday. I'm not being sanctimonious against those that do, perhaps I prioritise holidays below certain other things, not sure what, but hey ho!

Ladydeedy - I looked into that, but when I adde up the cost of flights + accom. + transfers + car hire I was quite surprised. Also the cheap Easyjet flights seem to have all gone now!

Exit - I'd love to go to Cuba! Was it reasonably priced even in high season?

Bloody hell, thanks for that Lenak. I wonder why they're so cheap?

My DD is at private school so they finish earlier than other schools so we went the first two weeks of July and it was £2500 for three of us, two weeks, all inclusive!

EmptyCrispPackets · 06/03/2011 16:15

You are definitly looking in the wrong places!

I havent paid more than £1700 for 4 years running for AI holidays to either Egypt/Turkey/Greece. Nice hotels too & that is for a family of four. If there are no child free places, take the internet price into the shop, they will match it/ better it.

fastedwina · 06/03/2011 16:15

went to Turkey last year in summer - family of four for 2 weeks and cost us about 2500 and that was 2 bedrooms and private taxi hire for 2hr transfer. Others we met had got it cheaper, so it is possible.

tyler80 · 06/03/2011 16:15

We've rented places in Tenerife through Ownersdirect a couple of times - Villa/Holiday Cottage for about 200 quid a week (not per person) then just flights on top.

lenak · 06/03/2011 16:16

Teletext holidays have been going for years - they used to be available on the telly.

You don't actually book through them, you call the agent quoted - they are usually independants.

We are going to use them for our holiday this year. DH's brother has booked his last four or five holidays using teletext, usually all inclusive and has never had any problems.

It's usually worth checking Trip Advisor before booking though.

coccyx · 06/03/2011 16:16

Aren't holidays a treat rather than must have??
It is outrageous how they charge more during school holidays though

JaneS · 06/03/2011 16:16

Would driving to Brittany or Normandy be a compromise? It is quite cheap if you pile the car high and quite decent beaches.

QuickLookBusy · 06/03/2011 16:17

We always rent a villa/apartment from owners directly, then do our own flights. Much cheaper than a package, and the rentals go from anything from about £600 a week to £6000 so you have plenty of choice.Smile

TheBolter · 06/03/2011 16:18

Thanks everyone. Emptycrisppacket, if you can remember who you booked your holidays through Id be interested to know!
